Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

I hope they didnt have to quarantine Piglet, I have a 5pm ADR at CP on the 20th.

Just read the article and what I did find interesting, and I quote:

"even if you're around someone with swine flu, your chances of getting it are slim. Only about 25 percent of the people exposed to the virus, become infected with it, and of those only 12.5 percent actually get flu-like symptoms. That means, for every 100 people who get close to an infected person, fewer than three would feel the effects."

Yes, I know in the context of Disney that's still a very large number, but if certainly reads a lot better than 50 in every 100 people :goodvibes

What article is this? I would love to read it. Is it possible you could post the link?

Many thanks:flower3:

I except the fact that when added up it is a high number of people infected, but there is still a very low chance of my family and I experiencing the symptoms as individuals, and that is all I am concerned about for our upcoming trip.

Is this correct?
"Officials said people infected with swine flu are most contagious a day before they fall ill, and seven days after recovery."

I'm just trying to understand how long people may really have this and be able to spread it. Up to 7 days incubation period with no symptoms, up to 7 days sick, and according to the above article, 7 days after recovery people are very contagious.

What's the population in Metro Orlando? And there are three cases, most likely from people who have recently returend from Mexico?

Cluck, cluck, cluck. This is insane!

only one of them was in Orlando, the #3 is for the state

Gosh, the most interesting fact here...is the 12.5 percent of the population is infected and not feeling symptoms. So...that 12.5 percent are just toddling around the parks. :confused3

Am I confused here?

You have it right, from everything I've read. So you add that 12.5 percent to the 12.5 percent who will show symptoms (but may be feeling perfectly fine for 7 days beforehand), and now we've gone from 7000 per day to 14000 per day who may be exposing you and your family to the virus. Those are odds I'd rather not play, no matter how much hand sanitizer I have.

Just wanted to remind everyone, also, that you can no longer count on confirmed cases to provide an accurate total. The CDC is backlogged and only testing samples from new areas. So now that Disney's been confirmed, you're not going to hear more confirmation numbers from the area. Flu victims will simply be assumed to have H1N1 and treated as such.

As I write this I am sitting in my condo listening to the Disney fireworks, and all I can say is that I am SO glad my husband, who is very rational, laughed when I told him maybe we should cancel our trip to Disney because of the swine flu. Since we left NY, where there are, incidentally, many more cases than in FL, the swine flu media frenzy has died off, making it not even the top news story of the day. As long as I don't sit on my laptop and look at this thread, I am not worrying obsessively about my children catching swine flu. Especially since I rationally know that they have the same likelihood of catching the regular flu (or, god forbid, a stomach virus, which after the last one where my oldest daughter ended up in the hospital, I would say is probably worse than swine flu) on any given day.

All official accounts I have read anywhere and everywhere say that this flu acts like a typical flu and the symptoms are actually quite mild, with patients recovering quickly. My advice to anyone who is driving themselves crazy about this is to stop reading this thread. Swine flu is not signaling the end of the world. The flu has been around forever. Make sure you and your children wash your hands frequently, and I always, even before swine flu, carry around antibacterial wipes for their hands and I also wipe down any tables where we eat. (I am a little germ crazy, I admit!)

So, off I go to pack the bags for Magic Kingdom tomorrow, as I thank my husband for telling me to stop reading this thread right before we left and stop listening to all of the media hype....To everyone else who is planning a trip soon, ENJOY!!!! :)

YEP!! You are exactly right! :)

Enjoy your vacation! :thumbsup2

We have come to the same conclusion as you in the last few days (and we understand why you have not had time to read all of those pages!) - this flu is mild and hopefully will go away soon!! :goodvibes

If it is causing you stress (or anyone else out there) to read this thread, then by all means...unsubscribe! :) Don't click on it. Don't read it.

And it should be against the DIS law to look at it during Wishes! :scared1:

You are in DISNEY! Forget about the Swine Flu! :)

And to the lurkers...by all means, don't laugh out loud at work at all of those hilarious cartoons! :rotfl2:

Exactly! And to think just a few days ago I was told on this very thread how reckless, irresponsible, and uncaring I was to even consider taking my scheduled vacation later this month. :lmao:

NP, here's the link http://www.wftv.com/news/19342017/detail.html

Excellent, thank you. I can pass this on to my SIL, I know this will help her a great deal.

In this link there is another link to "top 10 things about swine flu" that says this:

"Does Swine Flu always cause a fever?
Not always. You might have a lighter case of it or other symptoms like headache, sore throat and cough"

I don't know about anybody else, but this also reassures me somewhat.

Every year 400 people are struck by lightning in the US.

About 80 are killed.

I stand by my original post.
20%. MUCH higher than the rate of H1N! deaths. Thanks for posting the facts, Alesia!

Wow, thank you so much for posting this. Has helped me to get back the excitement of getting packed.

Have to admit, I was driving myself crazy and working myself up until I felt sick with worry (I know, incredibly silly.....have pulled myself together now, with the help of a lot of prayer) and I do think this thread did contribute to that. I have, however, decided to keep reading this thread though, now that I am feeling a little better, as I think you are all doing such a great job. It's great I can come on here and keep up to date with the situation, particularly there in the US, as we have stopped getting any reports here in the UK. It's great there are more and more optomistic posts coming through.

Is this a fair assessment of the US now? It's from the BBC:

"In the US, the number of confirmed cases rose from 160 to 226. Officials said this was because the results of lab tests were now coming through, rather than because of a new surge in cases.

But an expert from America's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the virus was fairly widespread.

"Virtually all of the United States probably has this virus circulating now," Dr Anne Schuchat said.

"That doesn't mean that everybody's infected, but within the communities, the virus has arrived."

She said the good news is that most cases are mild, although a small child who was visiting from Mexico has died.

Dr Schuchat said that although she expected cases to become more severe and to lead to deaths, this in itself would not be unusual as every year 36,000 people die in the US after contracting seasonal flu. But she warned: "I don't think we're out of the woods yet."
