Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

Injury ONE sustained in the Brook's family household :rotfl2:

I sooo can't believe I am posting this ~ I deserve a purple heart.

I had just finished cleaning the bathroom between posting on here (as the kids just got out of the tub) and ran in there to potty really fast ~ forgot the potty was still wet and slippery and I slipped and fell off the potty :lmao:

So add me to the numbers effected by the swine flu :rotfl2:

Update on me, if you remember me lol. I got sick on my honeymoon last week. The strain I have is thankfully NOT swine flu. It is a rarer, more potent (if that word works here) strain that seems to affect those with asthma (like me) more seriously (normal for flu). I've been told that if my croup keeps up and my wheezing doesn't go away by tomorrow I need to take myself down the to ER. This is apparently not a common strain here in the US, it's more common in less developed countries. It figures I'd get sick from some crazy strain.. I have a horrible immune system!

:hug:I am so sorry. I hope you feel better soon.

Health officials are watching a group of 18 band students from South Carolina, who attended a camp at WDW last week, and came down with flu-like symptoms.
The school was closed on Wednesday, as district employees wearing gloves and masks swarmed through the 330,000 square foot building, sprayed disinfectant on desks, lockers, doors and bathrooms in a full-scale deep clean of the school, according to news sources.

THIS is why we MIGHT cancel...the reason that it is not in florida yet is because everyone leaves and goes home!
It does not mean it is not at wdw yet...wdw will NEVER COME OUT AND SAY WE HAVE A CASE HERE AT WDW!

LOCOLALA...I am so sorry you are still sick!! And I have no idea where your post is to quote it...but I hope you feel much better soon! Take care and please let us know how you are doing!

Maroo reminded me of something in a PM and I wanted to share.

You trust the govenment? You think they will help/notify you when you need to worry?

NOT ME... I went through Katrina first hand. After that I have lost all faith in EOC's and the likes.

DO not EVER wait for the country to come in and save you or your family or protect you. That is the biggest lesson I learned. Sure years later we got help BUT had you been here that first month ~~~~ OMG it was BAD.

I was there. I am a Katrina survivor as well. And I, too, have lost faith in the protection of the government. That's part of why I choose to cancel my trip...if it was scheduled for next month, or even later this month, there would be more time to monitor the situation. But there is simply not enough time before our trip, which would have started tomorrow, to see how things play out. And I'm sure Katrina is a large part of why I choose to trust our doctor rather than the CDC confirmations.

Hold on. I just read somewhere that the group from SC has a different flu strain NOT swine flu. Let me check where I read that and get back to you. There is still the seasonal flu going around in Florida.

We are supposed to leave for the World tomorrow and will be there on Saturday. My husband and I are both taking our limited vacations next week....that is a "done deal". I have three children that have been pulling links off of a paper chain for months. I have been waking them up singing zip-a-dee-do-dah and then while they are eating breakfast we broadcast a Disney song of the day through the house. We have been planning and packing and I have done everything I can to get them stoked and excited about this trip...spreading the pixie dust. Now, the week before, things have changed. I have been telling myself that we can clorox wipe, germ-x, keep our hands away from our faces, and it will all be ok...especially since there were no cases in Florida, let alone Disney. I get the feeling that by the time we arrive, that will change.

What is everyone else doing? I know there was thread after thread about so many DIS'ers going the first week of May. Everyone still going?
Just out of curiosity, if I call tomorrow...the day before we are scheduled to check-in (and I have already checked in online) can we still get a refund with the exception of a fee that I would expect?

I am sooooo upset. I feel like I could throw-up. To top it off, I called my family doctor and she said to use my own judgment, but that she personally would not go.
While I would know that I would be canceling out of love and concern...an 8 year old that has been pumped up for months is not going to understand.

I need help here.

I read in a later post that you were driving. IMO that does help the situation some. Have you considered just changing your trip a little. If your 8 year old is your oldest he probably wont know the difference. Spend more time outside and not in crowds. Watch the fireworks from the poly beach, stay and watch the water parade. Do a character meal (no buffet) so you can see the characters without standing in lines. I know it wont be the same to you I'll bet your kids will have a great time. Just clean the room when you arrive, get that bedspread out of the room and be very careful.

I swear, this whole thing is really p***ing me off! Not to be a broken record here, but this hysteria is assinine. The ignorance people are showing buying into the media hype over this makes me realise how the subprime mortgage crisis happened: clueless people will believe anything people tell them.
Sure, you make $54,000 a year, you can afford a $450,000 house! Swine flu is coming! Get your Purell and facemasks!

People...you literally have a better chance of getting in a car accident than you do of contracting swine flu. Plus, you don't live in Mexico. Even in our most lax states, our air quality, nutrition and medical care are like 300% better than the best parts of Mexico. This is NOT 1778....calm down! Unless you're living in a dirty house with 6 other families and eating crappy food, you have a 98% chance of staying healthy.

Ohh...I also don't care if I get flamed for my comments on Mexico. Remember the tainted tomatoes of 2008? Who gave them to us? Mexico! Salmonella spinach? Mexico! Thank you to all the greedy companies who fled to get cheap labor in Mexico and China...what did we get in addition to unemployment? Tainted food, tainted pet food, tainted baby formula, lead-filled toys. Everybody is so worried about being "politically correct" (the Dems) or offending voters (Dems and Republicans) or using hysteria to divide the masses (Republicans) that nobody is doing anything to protect Americans from this sub-par crap that is making our babies, pets and elderly sick. Look how long it took to name Mexico as the source of tainted tomatoes! Mattel actually APOLOGIZED to China when Mattel found lead in their toys. People, instead of being worried about if you're going to get sick at WDW or if the gay guy will win on Idol, lets start putting our religious and political differences aside and stand together against these corporations that are sacrificing OUR HEALTH to wring out more profit!:headache:

umm, in the immortal words of Val Kilmer "there are a lot of decaffeinated brands on the market that are just as good as the real thing." just sayin'.

Not my proudest moment. There I am on the floor with my shorts to my ankles busting up laughing so hard I couldn't breathe. Nice visual huh? :rotfl2:

So make sure to wipe the potty DRY before using it. This has been a public message announcement for your health.:rotfl2:

You are correct! They had another flu strain! :)

umm, in the immortal words of Val Kilmer "there are a lot of decaffeinated brands on the market that are just as good as the real thing." just sayin'.

Darn! I was hoping we would all ignore that post. ;)

But your response was pretty funny! :lmao:

Oh my gosh! That is very funny!!!!!!:rotfl: I've yet to do that but I have raced to the bathroom (in my own house) and sat down quicky before realizing that the seat was up! Yuck! I was sooooo mad at my DH after that!

OK, no fair; you owe me a new keyboard now that I spit Diet coke all over mine! :rotfl2:Hey- what's the best way to disinfect a computer keyboard, anyway

That's the way I read it, too FWIW

I may be entirely off base altogether, but I read this differently. I thought this was a well-written commentary on the reality of the "precautions" that posters plan to take. If you follow the planned precautions through to their logical extreme, this is where you get to. If you're not planning to be that extreme with the precautions, then how are you possibly mitigating your risks? And that seems like a heck of a bad way to spend a vacation.

Of course, I might be entirely wrong, and this might be a completely serious response, in which case I totally agree, the OP would be miserable right now.

:thumbsup2:worship:Thank you both for getting what I was saying!:thumbsup2:cool1:

OH LORD I can see it now at Disney ~~~ everywhere I go DiS peeps will point to me and say "Hey I think that's the woman who fell off the potty"

:rotfl2: I am going to sign autographs :rotfl2:

Personally, I plan on wearing a meat helmet made of nothing but 1" thick pork chops, not washing my hands for the entire duration of the trip. . .

just to cheat death. . .

I'm going to lick the sword and the stone statue. . . especially the handle!!!

Then I will taunt death, announce my room number and scream "COME AND GET ME, IF YOU DARE!!!!" :rotfl:

*the following message was a pun. I do not endorse pork chop helmets, crusty hands or the licking of iconic statues in Walt Disney World*
