Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

Its just weird because there saying its contagious spreading like wildfire.Yet that little boy that died Did not infect none of his family.I know as a father I would be holding my daughter hugging her be really be nursing my daughter yet no one else in the family got infected?

OK, so far I bet more people have died in automobile crashes in the USA within 24 hours than from the swine flu over the last two weeks. The current news media in its omnipressant glory :lmao:. Go on be afraid be very afraid ... the Russians are coming. It's fine to prepare and be prepared, but this is becoming a soap box spectacle. I would have expected that we would have had reports from Mexico by now that people were dying in the thousands if this was a supervirulent bug.

I want to see your post after your town shuts down and everyone has masks on. Are you going to think the gov't or powers that be are inflating the seriosness of this for some other reason or that they don't know what they're doing? I've been right where you are now-"oh what's the big deal?" now I am shut in my house and my town is shut down. Believe what you will but the real problem is that those who do not respect the opinions of those on the front lines of this issue, who are there to predict the virulency and effect on population masses, are going to be the ones to spread this by not taking it seriously!
I do not want to pick on you and I hate the constant fighting on these boards but your posts are very strongly worded. Please avoid exposure and limit your contact to all others in closed spaces despite what you think the "real truth" is!

:goodvibes

Ok, I am posting this here for informational purposes only. Not to create more panic. I know there are all types on this board (obviously!) the naysayers and the we're all gonna die people. I am writing from one of the hardest hit areas. Our city created precedent yesterday by closing all of the local school districts. I posted their link earlier. Now I received this forwarded email from an ER doc at our local hospital. While I cannot vouch for his accuracy I can state he treated me for an infection 4 years ago and does not seem to be someone who would sensationalize this problem. Here is the email with some good homeopathic tips included:

Thought this was very good information for you and Jim to have. This is
beginning to look very serious.
Governor Perry had a press conference mid-day and updated the level of
response to pandemic.
The last couple of bullets below suggest some homeopathic and supplement
information that we are all starting on today.

I will keep you updated as Marc sends me information.
Although he is not at the Hospital today, Heather said he has been in
constant contact with the doctors on duty and will probably have to go
back in they are so overrun. They have confirmed 80 cases today. The
CDC alerted them to classify any A positives on the flu test as H1N1
swine flu.

Begin forwarded message:

After I returned from a public health meeting yesterday with community
leaders and school officials in Comal County, Heather suggested I send
an update to everyone, because what we are hearing privately from the
CDC and Health Department is so different from what you are hearing in
the media. Some of you know some or maybe all of this, but I will just
list what facts I know.

- The virus is infectious for about 2 days prior to symptom onset
- Virus sheds more than 7 days after symptom onset (possibly as long as
9 days) (this is unusual)
- Since it is such a novel (new) virus, there is no "herd immunity," so
the "attack rate" is very high. This is the percentage of people who
come down with a virus if exposed. Almost everyone who is exposed to
this virus will become infected, though not all will be symptomatc. That
is much higher than seasonal flu, which averages 10-15%. The "clinical
attack rate" may be around 40-50%. This is the number of people who show
symptoms. This is a huge number. It is hard to convey the seriousness of
this.
- The virulence (deadliness) of this virus is as bad here as in Mexico,
and there are folks on ventilators here in the US, right now. This has
not been in the media, but a 23 month old near here is fighting for his
life, and a pregnant woman just south of San Antonio is fighting for her
life. In Mexico, these folks might have died already, but here in the
US, folks are getting Tamiflu or Relenza quickly, and we have ready
access to ventilators. What this means is that within a couple of weeks,
regional hospitals will likely become overwhelmed.
- Some of the kids with positive cases in Comal County had more than 70
contacts before diagnosis.
- There are 10-25 times more actual cases (not "possible" cases --
actual), than what is being reported in the media. The way they fudge on
reporting this is that it takes 3 days to get the confirmatory nod from
the CDC on a given viral culture, but based on epidemiological grounds,
we know that there are more than 10 cases for each "confirmed" case
right now.
- During the night, we crossed the threshold for the definition of a
WHO, Phase 6 global pandemic. This has not happened in any of our
lifetimes so far. We are in uncharted territory.
- I expect President Obama will declare an emergency sometime in the
next 72-96 hours. This may not happen, but if it doesn't, I will be
surprised. When this happens, all public gathering will be cancelled for
10 days.
- I suggest all of us avoid public gatherings. Outdoor activities are
not as likely to lead to infection. It is contained areas and close
contact that are the biggest risk.
- Tamiflu is running out. There is a national stockpile, but it will
have to be carefully managed, as it is not enough to treat the likely
number of infections when this is full-blown. I don't think there is a
big supply of Relenza, but I do not know those numbers. If I had to
choose, I would take Relenza, as I think it gets more drug to the
affected tissue than Tamiflu.
- You should avoid going to the ER if you think you have been exposed or
are symptomatic. ER's south of here are becoming overwhelmed -- and I
mean that -- already. It is coming in waves, but the waves are getting
bigger.
- It appears that this flu produces a distinctive "hoarseness" in many
victims. The symptoms, in general, match other flu's; namely, sore
throat, body aches, headache, cough, and fever. Some have all these
symptoms, while others may have only one or two.
- N-Acetyl-Cysteine -- a nutritional supplement available at the health
food store or Wimberley Pharmacy, has been shown to prevent or lessen
the severity of influenza. I suggest 1200mg, twice a day for adults, and
600mg twice a day in kids over 12. It would be hard to get kids under 12
to take it, but you could try opening the capsules and putting it on
yogurt. For 40 pounds and up, 300-600 mg twice a day, for less than 40
pounds, half that.
- Oscillococinum, a homeopathic remedy, has been vindicated as quite
effective in a large clinical trial in Europe, with an H1N1 variant. You
can buy this at Hill Country Natural Foods, or the Wimberley Pharmacy.

I will try to keep everyone posted if I have any new information.
Meanwhile, don't be afraid just avoid infection. The fewer people
infected the easier it will be for our public officials to manage it.

wow!

I just read something similar on CNN's website. One of their doctor's seemed to think this was a sign that the transmission is not as rapid as originally thought. Apparently none of the children in the NYC school passed the virus onto their family members.

The student in Schertz that was positive had a sister. When they tested his 2 parents and sister the sister and father had the virus but the mother didn't.

Flu threat rises; 100 new cases

By Ashlie McEachern
The Herald-Zeitung
Published April 30, 2009

In less than 24 hours, a 100 more cases of suspected swine flu were detected in Comal County. Comal County Health Authority Dorothy Overman said Wednesday the majority of flu cases were in students and the decision to close schools as well as “social distancing” could prevent the further spread of influenza.

Dr. Overman said the surge in cases puts the count (as of Wednesday morning) at 140 suspected cases in the county. Dr. Overman released the new figures at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

Three of the cases of undetermined flu have been sent to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and will take several days to diagnose.

The other 137 cases have been sent to regional health authorities where a viral culture will be done to determine the type and whether these cultures should be forwarded to the CDC for further testing.

“There have been no hospitalizations due to swine flu, but I expect swine flu cases to rise in Comal County,” Dr. Overman said. “It is rare to see this rapid rise of flu so late in the season and I am concerned. We are worried about the possibility of deaths. We advise anyone with an illness to stay home seven days past the last day of illness and for people to avoid mass gatherings. Anyone that has symptoms should call their physician.”

Comal County Judge Danny Scheel said that the county and city were taking all necessary precautions to ensure the health and safety of the public.

“I am asking that parents monitor their children while the schools are out and keep them at home,” Scheel said. “It is very important for people to avoid public gatherings and to stay at home if possible.”

Ok,

WHO, Phase 6 global pandemic. This has not happened in any of our

I wanted to clarify this, because I feel it is misleading. WHO's "phase rating" has not been in effect for very long. If it had been around in 1968, it would have been a level 6, as the Hong Kong flu was in fact a pandemic. Remember that pandemic simply means that a disease is spreading in several parts of the world simultaneously. It does not indicate whether that disease is severe or mild.

So, Cormal County is the same county (or close) where the detailed email came from, right?

Sounds like there are quite a few cases in that one county. More than is documented in the whole country?

CNN.com has a live feed of an emergency House of Representatives hearing about the swine flu. If anyone is interested in tuning in.

Ok I need advice. We are supposed to fly out Saturday for Disney and we were/are super excited! But now this all happens and I wonder what to do. My 3 yo is so excited I hate to let her down. We have 2 days left to make a decision. Our plane ride is only about 90 min from SC, and I have stocked up on hand sanitizer, etc. We are leaning heavily toward still taking this trip, but the unknown has me a little concerned. Anybody have any opinions? Any advice for traveling?
BTW-a local high school here was closed yesterday because they had a band trip to WDW a week ago and between 16-18 of the 70 students have flu like symptoms. I think this has caused many of my concerns.

I think if you read through all these pages there is definitely opinions on whether or not to still take their planned vacations. Or there may be a completely other thread on this, not sure. For the most part, everyone seems to be traveling as planned. Me included. We leave tomorrow for Disney. Just taking extra precautions is all. But you need to decide what is best for you & your family. For me, it isn't any different then traveling during regular flu season it is just it is all over the media in your face all day long. Good luck with your decision!

The advice on this thread will vary from - "Are you kidding?!?! Swine flu is so overated?!? More people die in _____ than from this. Go, enjoy your trip!" to "Don't go...lock yourself in your house till it passes."

Having said that...
I would wait 2 days and make the decision. Honestly. If the flu is "going around" in your area, then I would stay home just for the sake of everyone else, honestly.

I think you will "know" in 2 days, honestly. If the cases in your hometown are overblown and they are all getting better and you weren't exposed and this all seems overrated...and you aren't worried about being exposed in Disney, then I would go. Trust your gut.

Unsure how accurate it is, but I just overheard one of the news stations say the little boy that died :( had spent time at the mall the day he was admitted to the hospital.

Here's the article from one of our local news channels in Greenville, SC

Flu Closes Mauldin High School For Day
Nearly 20 Students Report Flu-Like Symptoms After Band Trip

The Greenville County School District announced Wednesday evening at about 6:15 p.m. that the school would be closed Thursday to be cleaned and disinfected according to state Department of Health and Environmental Control guidelines.

"We've decided to close the school for one day," said Greenville County School District representative Oby Lyles.

The school district said that 16 to 18 of the 70 students who went to Disney World in Florida last week on an advanced band trip have reported flu-like symptoms.

School district officials said that they are waiting for DHEC test results from several cases to determine the type of flu the students have.

Parents of the band students are being contacted regarding increased risk of exposure to the flu.

All Mauldin High families are being called Thursday night regarding the school closing.

"Student safety always comes first, and we're going to err on the side of safety," Lyles said. "We're going to make sure that we have a safe environment at the school, and by doing so, I think we will."

Lyles said that other Greenville County schools are being advised to closely monitor students and to report any cases of flu-like symptoms to the district's coordinator of health services.

Information about viral diseases and precautions for parents has also been sent to schools, Lyles said.

It was just being reported on the news now that the toddler whom died from the Swine Flu WAS in the mall all day when his first symptoms showed. No one really knows whether the person walking next to you is infected or not. That person might not even know. It would be bad if I get this flu because I have scleroderma to deal with.

I have not heard any medical authority refer to this flu as "mild". On the contrary, this is precisely why they are trying to be very serious about this, so that you move your thinking from "it's just the flu" to someone who takes it seriously. The WHO raising their alert to Level 5 is not a farce, not a conspiracy. Please, if you feel ill with even what you determine is just the "flu" don't infect others that could possibly be immune compromised or who it may affect worse than yourself. We can stop this if we take it seriously, but do not panic. :goodvibes

I have heard reports as authority saying that most cases in the U.S. have been mild flu symptoms. The WHO raising the alert to Phase 5 has nothing to do with the virulance of this flu. Phase 5 simply states that 2 or more countries in the WHO region have outbreaks. So far, this strain of the flu seems to be very treatable in the U.S.

Just taking extra precautions is all. But you need to decide what is best for you & your family. For me, it isn't any different then traveling during regular flu season it is just it is all over the media in your face all day long. Good luck with your decision!

Agreed - we had some confirmed cases in our state and local area yesterday. You can't live in a bubble, you can only take the precautions that are being advised now and are always advised during regular flu season: frequent hand washing w/soap & water, using alcohol-based hand sanitizers, no touching your face with your hands, coughing & sneezing into you sleeve, etc.

I find it interesting that Ms. Overman's tone seems to vary based on where she is being quoted. Perhaps she is being taken out of context by the newspaper, but her letter to residents found on the Comal County website (dated 4/29/09) sounds a lot more promising than what the paper reported.

This is what causes panic. It is the flu. It is not Ebola. The flu is transmitted person to person. You catch the flu by breathing in the droplets from someone speaking, coughing, or sneezing. It is not an "airborne" virus.

Whatever happened to the confirmation of the case in Disney and why is it taking so long to reveal the results?
