Swimming in the gulf

I was just wondering if it is too cold in December to swim in the Gulf if we were to go to Tampa as a side trip for a few days?

It has been a few years, but we went swimming in the Gulf in January. A lot depends on the weather and what you are used to. Being Northerners, we welcomed the 70 degree weather. I have heard the Gulf is warmer and calmer than the ocean.
