I am only 23, but I have a problem with getting inflammed in heat. I have pre-mature arthritis in my hands and knees, and living in Florida, I get swollen and hurt in the heat. I heard once that if I took a water pill it would help. But I am afraid I will get dehydrated. Any advice? I usually take Aleve, but it only helps so much, ya know.

Drink lots of water. You swell in the heat because your body tries to save water. If it is getting enough it won't retain so much.

Drink lots of water and cut back salt as much as possible. Also, keep your knees propped up when you can. :) Have a great trip!

You should never take a "water pill" without checking with a doctor first. "Water pills" are diuretics - I take one to control my blood pressure. If you take one on your own (if your doctor doesn't prescribe it), you never know what could happen, especially if you have underlying health problems.

I would check with your rheumatologist (sp?) - since you have arthritis, you probably already go to one. That specialist should be able to tell you some safe things to do to help with the swelling and heat.

And, as others have said, drink plenty of water! I thought I was drinking enough on my trip last October, but got pretty dehydrated before I realized it. Got swollen and puffy, especially around the ankles. It took about three days to get un-swollen.
