I am training for the half at disneyland and this last Saturday was my 4 mile. I had such a hard time with my fingers swelling. It swells in teh shorter times too but this time it was bad. I had to remove my rings.

Does anyone know anything about swelling fingers with long walks?

Mine do this each & every time I exercise. I've never found a cure.

I asked about this awhile back on the walking/running thread. Basically, I learned to take my rings off before my wogs. While I am out there, I try hard to remember to keep my hands up, almost near my face. It helps somewhat. Other than that, I just kind of put up with it.

If you find out any other ways to deal with this - let me know!

somewhere on www.walking.about.com there was an article about this. Possible causes include not drinking enough water, or drinking too much water. Ya, that's helpful. I think it also said not to raise your hands higher than your heart. I just try to remember to take my rings off!!

I have always found that if I walk with my arms bent at about a 90 degree angle, my fingers don't swell as much as when I just let them hang down to my sides.

Thanks for asking the question. It happens to me too and it is always good to try to understand the why...

Keep on keepin' on.

I get swelling on anything over 6-7 miles. When doing races that have water stations, after taking a drink (or grab a 2nd cup)...pour some water into your hands and hold cupped there as you walk on. Drip dry. Won't take the swelling completely away, but sometimes it helps a little.

Also remember that with your arms bent, the blood doesn't flow as well. Drop your hands straight down from time to time and wiggles your hands. Shake it out but keep moving. Also stretch your arms up sometimes it will help relax the tension in shoulders and wrists. Okay I know I look silly doing this ape imitation but it kind of helps break things up a little and then you can refocus on moving foward instead of how bad your fingers are starting to feel.

Also watch your salt intake, my fingers ALWAYS swell when I walk long distances. Lowering your sodium helps this. Remember DIET COKE even has quite a bit of sodium. :thumbsup2

You don't have to completely give it up, just on long walk days. I am a diet soda junkie as well :thumbsup2
