My daughter turns sixteen in March and wants to do something fun with her friends. I decided to rent a limo that will take her and her friends to the mall for a digital scavenger hunt. I'll make a list of things they have to find or do in the mall and they have to take a picture of them doing it or buying it. I'll give them an envelope with some money for their purchases. Here's what I've come up with so far:

1.) Find a cute guy and ask him to pose for a picture with a few of you.

2.) Use these quarters to ride the coin operated toys and get a picture doing it.

3.) Buy something that smells really good from Bath and Body. Ask one of the employees to take a picture of all of you in the store. Then walk out of the store quacking like ducks and flapping your wings.

4.) Find the photo booth and have some silly pictures taken.

I want to give them 16 things to do or find and I want these things to be harmless but maybe a bit embarrassing and definitely fun.

Has anyone done something like this before?
Can you give me some ideas?

What about putting on blue eyeshadow at the makeup counter at Macys or another department store?

Buy a CD or poster of one of her favorite bands?

Try on a bra over their clothes at Victoria's Secret? Ask someone what Victoria's Secret really is?

Do they have a food court? Could they order something really strange and each have to take a bite?

Get a perfume sample from Hollister or one of the department stores?

They could take a picture of each. I have a cold and I'm doped up on Dayquil or I'd be more creative! Sorry!

I was the 'victim' of a video scavenger hunt. A few years ago I went to the grocery store one night and as I was loading the bags into my trunk I heard several footsteps running up behind me. It scared me to death. I turned to see several teenagers running towards me. It was dark outside and they freaked me out; I didn't know what they were doing. They said "Can we load your groceries in your car? We are doing a video scavenger hunt and that's one of the things on our list.". I let them do it and then they all ran into the grocery store. Looks like they were having fun. I, on the otherhand, had to go home and change my underwear .....

May be a problem....I know at the mall I worked in that anyone over 10 was *not* allowed on these things and got yelled at by Security!

That said more ideas:

Group picture with mall security

is there a car inside the mall for raffle or sale? Picture with each of them in the drivers seat

buy a funny 16 related key chain from a store in the mall (claire's, spencers)

Picture of them buying something from a store they would not be DEAD shopping at

picture w/ maniquinns (sp?)

picture w/food sample person

picture trying on shoes

picture of a dressing room

picture of fountain, tossing coins in or putting hands in

picture of pretzel, cinabonn, etc being made

picture in Sharper imgage- thinking of something silly in there

picture in William Sanoma (or cooking dept of JC Penny, etc) with wisks

picture in bedding dept, having a pillow fight or laying on the demo beds

I would recommend calling the mall and asking permission first as well. We tried to do this for dd's 13th bday and were told by every mall around here that this was absolutely prohibited. We ended up doinf the Amazing Race instead and had a BLAST!! Good luck!

We did a digital scavenger hunt for our 30-40 something sunday school class. If they have half the fun our class did, they will have a blast. We (or I should say DH) did ours in poetry form and they had to solve the clues to get to the location. I would share them, but they are local places of interest, so they wouldn't make any sense! lol

Wow! Thanks everyone for the ideas. I know she is going to love this surprise. I'm even really excited about it. Wish I was sixteen again so I could go along...

Just a mall employee's point of view. Please send adults to supervise each team or group of scavanger hunters. I have seen several groups run through the store where I work and they can be quite disruptive. Better to head off a problem than to deal with it after it occurs. Hope your daughter has a great birthday.

This sounds like a great idea for a birthday party!!! and will be lots of fun!! But I used to work at a mall and we did not allow people to take pictures in our store. It was our companys policy (also the malls). We were more than happy to keep "prizes" for the teams, just no pictures. I would check with the mall first!! I hope your daughter has a great sweet sixteen!!!

Our mall does not let shoppers 16 or under in without adult supervision.

thank you for saying what i was thinking....:)
i've seen many a scavanger hunt where the kids were so involved in the "hunt" that they unwittingly disrupted stores (digging through items & discarding them on the floor, etc) & disturbed customers (running & pushing little ones out of their way, monopolizing salespeople so customers cannot get assistance). please, PLEASE emphasize courtesy & consider how it will affect the customers and employees (hate to be a "kill joy", but i would definately not recommend a pillow fight, yelling, using the dressing rooms so paying customers cannot, etc).
if you can't get enough adults to chaperone (again, not saying the "disruption" would be intentional), i would recommend a park or somewhere that they could really enjoy getting out excess energy, be as crazy & loud as they want, messy (of course, not littering ;) ) & just have a great time!!
whatever you decide, i hope your daughter has a great birthday!

I was going to suggest the same thing: Check first to make sure it's okay. We tried to do this activity with our scout troop, and we thought we were very organized about it: we divided the girls into small groups, and we had an adult with each group. Our list of items to find was awesome, and things had point values. The girls were sooo excited, but within MINUTES we were nabbed by security, who were not particularly nice to us. It didn't give me the warm fuzzies towards this particular mall!

Someone in our neighborhood did one here in the neighborhood for a teen party. We had 3 teens come to our door and they had a sheet of paper with a list of things they had to come back with. It was funny! They got a penny from 1989, a paperclip, a lego and a magazine from last year from us. Other things I remember from their list: a broken child's watch (cheap), a baby sock (blue), a can of cat food, a church bulletion, a playing card, an old tube of lipstick, and a package of koolaid. Have fun! Sounds like a blast! I had considered this for a girl scout outing. I thought I would do a "clue" type thing, like the amazing race and go before hand and speak to the people in the stores. Hard part about that is that they change, go on breaks, etc.

How did you make out? We are planning on doing a mall one for my DD bday in May.

We STARTED to do something like this, but we got into trouble with mall security. We took our Girl Scout troop to the mall, and we had them divided into groups of 3-4 (each group accompanied by an adult). Each group had a list of things for which to search, and they were to take photographs. Within five minutes security had nabbed one of our groups and told us that 1) scavenger hunts are NOT allowed and 2) photography is NOT allowed.

This is the largest mall in two states, and it's definitely full of "young people" stores. I suspect they've had too many groups who were just turned loose to do . . . whatever. I know that teens frequently cause problems at this mall (I hear it from my students who work there, and I hear it from my students who get in trouble there!).

Anyway, be sure to check with mall administration before you go any farther with your plans!

Since you are going through the trouble of renting a limo why not make them go all over town doing taking photos and looking for things.

Take a photo in front of 'famous landmark' in your city.

Take a photo doing cartwheels in front of their school

Get a boy from their school to don a cheerleader outfit.

Go to grandma's house and serenade her.

We, too, were stopped by security immediately and told to leave. Esp with camera equipment.

Maybe an "around the town" one? Since you have a responsible driver?
