I grew up not liking it at all. It's only been over the past few years that I've come to enjoy it during Thanksgiving time. My ex-sister in law is the one who made it but since she's now an ex, nobody else makes it. She used to make a 13x9 pan but I want to make a small one this year (only a couple people eat it that will be here). So I was thinking of an 8x8 pan.

How many sweet potatoes do you think I would need to fill up the 8x8? And if you wouldn't mind sharing your recipe, that would be great. My ex-SIL only told me boiled/mashed sweet potatoes with butter, cinnamon, a little bit of nutmeg and brown sugar Then top with mini marshmallows.

Any tips or things to avoid?

Two pounds will be enough to fill the 8x8. Recipes for 13x9 dishes call for four pounds, so to adjust for an 8x8 you'd halve the recipe.

ok thanks.........and how far ahead of time can I buy sweet potatoes?

We just boil the potatoes, Peel them and slice them. Layer them in a fish and top with melted butter, brown sugar, and marshmallows. I guess you might call them candied sweet potatoes. This way you can make as much or as little as you want. I’m sure cinnamon and other spices would taste good too

Sweet potatoes can and should be stored in a dry, cool, dark place. It's possible to refrigerate, but it's unnecessary and the cold will change the texture of the potatoes. They'll last a couple of weeks in outside of the fridge.

The above recipe is similar to one our relatives make. The term 'crust' can be misleading if you are a novice at cooking/baking. I think a better term would be 'topping' so you don't mix up the order of the layering.
