I think, to some extent, this movie is about growing up. When she is young, all Melanie can look for is a better life, much as most of us do in our youth. She gets everything she ever wanted and more. Then she goes home, and realizes that life isn't about money and flash-it's about happiness. Thus the struggle between youthful dreams and growing up.
I'm not a big fan of the he's rich and she could've had a Tiffany's ring argument. I hardly think that, even in a movie, the person one spends their life with should be based upon the amount of money they have.
Also, I think it's important that both guys were good guys and good choices, it came down to love, not money, not who was a "better" guy, but who she loved.
Favorite lines from the film that SO fit real life:
"You can't ride two horses with one *butt (*edited)"
"It's not about the money Andrew, not down here"
"You can have roots AND wings, you know"
