Swapping Borrowed Points for Current Points on Existing Reservation

I cancelled a reservation that used borrowed points today and wanted to swap those points into another existing reservation that was using current uy points. The reason being that the borrowed points would expire at the end of this uy, while the current points could be banked.

The reservationist was unable to swap the points. I called later in the day and spoke to another reservationist who also told me she could not swap points. So, I thought why not add days to the existing reservation and then cancel it? This method worked and I now have current uy points that I can bank. Note that if neccesary, you can repeat this process (if you have 24 points to swap out, and only a single day worth 9 points is available to book, repeat the process three times).

Apologies if this method was already posted.

Thanks, I did not know you can do it that way.
Thanks Again for sharing

Very good thinking! :thumbsup2

I'm sorry I'm pretty new to this...I'm not sure I understand but would love to learn this method.

By adding days to your existing reservation, you are using the borrowed points. Then you have MS cancel the newly added days, making sure to tell her that the point value for the days cancelled should be this year's points?

I'd love to read about how this works, too...I'm not "getting it"...and I'm facing in to a very similar situation...

I have 42 points in holding (thanks to last winter's "snowmageddon!") and existing reservations over Labor Day, in late October and T-giving week. The T-giving week and late October reservations are with current year points; the Labor Day reservation is with borrowed points.

I'm pretty sure I'll be able to cancel/rebook the Labor Day trip at 60 days out, to use up the holding points--but then I'll have borrowed instead of holding points to use up. Somewhat better, but not perfect!

Availability is much tighter for the October trip and we all know that at this point chances of making changes to T-giving week reservations are slim...

So I'd LOVE to hear how this works...

Thanks--

I think you understand completely. Once the new, longer, reservation is complete it is all listed as one reservation. In MS computers, they will see that some of the points used were current UY, and some were borrowed points.

Then when vacation days are cancelled, you simply ask the CM to maintain the borrowed points in the existing reservation and have the cancelled points returned to the current UY.

Pretty clever actually...I don't think I've seen the strategy used before and of course it assumes that additional contiguous days are available at that resort for the same type of villa.

That is odd, as I've never had a problem with MS reallocating to the borrowed points. Were the borrowed points a different resort from the reservation, and did you make that reservation during the 11 month window?

What a clever idea. I'm not sure why MS couldn't reallocate borrowed points for current points. Did they give you a reason? It's probably something obvious that I'm not seeing.

I think that is very clever as well. I am surprised that DVC does not note what days were banked/borrowed points and hold you to your reserved points per the day. If that makes sense at all...lol

I only have one contract. I made an Xmas reserveration at my home resort using current use year points and at Hilton Head in August using borrowed points. I cancelled a few days from the HH trip.

I spoke to two CM's and neither could reallocate. The only way they said I could swap the points would be by cancelling and rebooking.

They just said it could not be done. When the first CM told me no I thought he was wrong, so I tried calling later in the day and got the same answer.

What interest would DVC be serving by doing so? I expect it would add a paperwork burden for both DVC and the members. Because we decided to take an expensive trip in our 2009 UY after already banking points from 2009 to 2010, our arrangements this year have been so complicated that I would need to full scale audit to figure which days were booked with current points and which were booked with banked or borrowed!

As others have posted, I have never had a problem with DVC reallocating points among borrowed and current for existing same resort reservations. We had to WL our 2009 reservation, which required having 2010 points which could be borrowed if the WL came through. We had already booked a 2010 UY vacation using all our current points, so we borrowed 2011 points, then reallocated thsoe borrowed points to free up 2010 current points. The WL came thru and the 2010 points were borrowed to 2009 without a hitch. -- Suzanne

My guess is that the OP was unlucky - she just got two inexperienced CMs.

There have been many reports of points being reallocated without having to go through the process the OP used. My advice is to ask for a Supervisor.

I agree. I've never once had a problem reallocating to use borrowed points instead of current points. What the OP went through should not be necessary.
