I thought I'd let you know the official line on exchanging the drink for a snack item on the qsdp.
As others have posted trying this and as I have the free dining in January, I would have liked to swap the drink for soup etc.

Thank you for contacting the Walt Disney World® Resort.

Unfortunately, you cannot use the drink part of the entitlement for another menu item. It would be necessary for you to use those entitlements for the full meal, with the drink included. If you decided you did not want the drink, you would unfortunately lose out on this portion of the entitlement.

If you have questions or need further assistance, feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

it goes the other way... if you'd rather have another beverage i.e. a soda and a lemonade slush instead of a soda and a dessert with your meal, that is fine.

I'm not sure what you mean, as a dessert is not included with counter service meals unless you use one of your snack credits.

Says right on there that the drink or dessert can be substituted for an eligible snack.

But you said you were going in January? Maybe it is changing for 2017? Don't know about that.

Dessert is included in the 2016 quick serve plan. It will not be included in 2017.

We swapped our drinks for an additional snack at CBR last year almost every meal since we had mugs. This must be new?

Found the 2017 pamphlet for the dining plans.

You can download it here. But it still has the same language about substitutions for the drink.
So whoever replied to your email didn't know what they were talking about. That's unfortunately not unusual it seems when asking Disney questions.
Good. I really liked being able to grab a muffin or bagel to put away for breakfast instead of a drink, since we had mugs.

Guests have already been told by managers at BOG that they can not exchange their drink for anything else. It seems to be this time of year (Oct-Dec) we see adjustments to menus and restaurant procedures, reportedly based on their negotiations with the DDP. Remember that there are many profit centers, with individual management and if they are not making enough money they make changes.

I would imagine there will be minimal changes but just as folks have found with BOG, you may run in to locations that have invoked their "subject to change" that covers all things Disney.

Dessert is included in QS

It will not be in 2017 so I think some convos are confusing if we aren't clear on travel dates.

Since ADR can book at 180 days when we get way in the window, some assume you are asking questions for 2017.

But OP is going in January, so no dessert applies.
