our first time down to fl. and need to know if we stay at either one of these spots do the kids get unlimited fastpass to all rides automatically, what are the special things we would get over staying at a value rate resort?

None of the resorts will give you unlimited fastpasses for your stay at WDW - You can only get fastpass with your park ticket - so anyone who has a park ticket or park hopper can get fastpass regardless if they are staying onsite or not.

thanks for info I thought I had read somewhere that having reservationat either place got you special enterance into lines.

I believe that if you are going to Universal and you stay at one of their resorts that have a special front of the line pass that allows Universal resort guests to go to the front of the line on all the rides at the 2 Universal parks .

WDW doesn't offer that as of now - however the do offer their onsite guests EMH - Extra Magic Hours - that allows resort guests to get in an hour early or stay up to 3 hours after close in the designated park -

As Disneyglobegirl mentioned, none of the resorts at Disney offer unlimited fast passes. You can only hold one fast pass at a time, with the exception of busier times when your fast pass return time may be several hours later, in which case there will be a time printed right on the ticket telling you what time you can get another one.

The main advantages to staying at the Swan and Dolphin over a value include:

Location--you can walk to MGM and Epcot from the Swan and Dolphin. A boat is also available to these parks. Buses would take you to MK, AK, and DTD. At the value resorts, all transportation is via buses, and no parks are within walking distance.

Sit down restaurants--there is only a food court at the Value resorts. The Swan and Dolphin offer several sit down dining choices, and it's a short walk to the Boardwalk and the Beach Club for even more choices.

Bigger rooms with heavenly beds--The rooms at the Swan and Dolphin are bigger than the rooms at the Value resorts (and some offer balconies as well), and they feature very comfy pillowtop beds. The values have just standard hotel mattresses.
