I want to book SWA in mid Jan. but booking isn't open yet. Does anyone have any "inside" information on when reservations for flights after Jan 5 will open?

It's not a secret, go to the SW website, scroll down to the bottom and click on Flight Schedules. You will get this message -

We are currently accepting air reservations through January 5, 2022. On September 16, 2021 we will open our schedule for sale through April 24, 2022. This date is subject to change! Please check back frequently.

And that page gets updated as the schedule keeps going further out, so if you bookmark it, you'll always have the next release date handy.
