Can some one clarify what SWA charges for baggage. I know the first bag is free, but what about others...

Here is the scenario..4 members of family flying, so does each one of our ticket holders get 1 free luggage, etc

We are going to be gone for 2 weeks, with an infant, so have alot of baggage to take, so just trying to figure out cost!

Thanks!!!:thumbsup2

I've copied this from the SW website:

"Baggage Allowance: Beginning January 29, 2008, Southwest will allow two (2) checked pieces of baggage per ticketed Customer. Size and weight limitations apply.
Excess Baggage: Effective January 29, 2008, you may check a third bag for a charge of $25. Your 4th through 9th bag or item will incur a charge of $50 per piece, and any bag or item thereafter will be $110 per piece.
Weight and Size Allowance: Maximum weight is 50 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height) per checked piece of luggage. Effective March 1, 2005, overweight items from 51 to 70 pounds will be accepted for a charge of $25.00 per item. Items weighing from 71 to 100 pounds and oversized items in excess of 62 inches but not more than 80 inches (i.e., surfboards, bicycles, vaulting poles) will be accepted for a charge of $50.00 per item. Any item weighing more than 100 pounds must be shipped as Air Cargo. However, Customers cannot use SWA Cargo unless classified as a Known Shipper as defined by the TSA or TSA approved Indirect Air Carriers (IAC). For full details about shipping cargo, visit swacargo.com. "

So to answer your question, each ticketed passenger is allowed 2 checked pieces of luggage.

Yes, 2 free, in fact we are flying united and sister w/son is flying SWA...guess who is taking the luggage? SISTER!......I paid for the flights so I don't bad about giving her this burden lol! :thumbsup2

Be especially careful that you don't exceed that 62 inch limit on your bags. Oversize is a bear.

Make sure that your sister's luggage is tagged as your name and address. If by chance they have to check and see that the tag does not match up to a passenger it might get removed. We do this also ourselves when traveling with kids who might not need their baggage entitlement, but do tag the bag with their name to match their ticket. If I was flying SW and UAL, I would do the same thing. Keep in mind currently, if you are going to WDW, United is NOT charging any luggage fees for the return flight, so you will be able to check your bags with RAC or ME for the return flight. Ask how many at the express desk, you may be able to send your sister's SW luggage with yours....just retag to correct traveller.
