In my opinion, even if SW's fare is higher than another carrier, its worth it to go SW, just to avoid the possibility of a change fee. Most airlines charge $150 for a change of any kind. AirTran I think are the only ones that still do $75, but that may have changed.
I agree 100% with this. Several years ago I booked online way in advance Delta for a trip to Orlando. They had better flight times. As we got closer to the trip we found out that Delta was about to strike. I can't remember if it was the pilots or who but they were going to support the other. They were in talks before and during our vacation.
I called a TA and he said to book SWA as a backup. So we did. We had 2 round-trip tickets on Delta and 2 round-trip tickets on SWA. The night before our Delta flight it was still a "go". I called SWA to cancel the first part of the ticket. (Still didn't know about the return on Delta) She said just don't show up. You are automatically cancelled when you don't check-in so many minutes before flight and they credit your account with those funds. How easy is that? Delta ended up not striking and we stuck with our Delta flights. We used the SWA credits to visit kids in Texas 6 months later.
For that reason, I don't like to fly anyone else. I don't need trip insurance when I book thru SWA.
Now I can't decide if I should wait a little longer and hope for a ding (travel 1st week of June) or just book and hope for a credit.
Not sure it will go any cheaper. Now to hope the flight to Orlando they really want drops back in price so I can change it to that.

It will cost me a total of $60 more than I wanted to pay but I would have it finished up and could move on to other planning - and real life. It just makes me loony to book a flight I know was less money 2 days ago!!!
