I'm not even sure if this is the way it works, but I booked our flight on SW a couple of weeks ago and today there is a lower rate. Can I get this difference in credit for another flight? Or is this something else entirely that I've read about and it doesn't work this way. Help!

Yes, you can get credit. Not sure how you booked your flights or what rate class you booked, so, given the unknowns, give Southwest a call and they can walk you right through it or change it for you on the phone.
They dont charge for changes.

:D I booked at $79 each way when Dec. opened up and the next week it dropped to $49 each way. I changed the flights and called SWA and they credited my CC the difference. I have read on hear that others have done the same.:D

Thank you both for the replies!

I called SWA and Jeff explained how to do it online. (The internet only fare meant it didn't even show up on his screen, so I had to cancel the flight and rebook with my ticketless travel funds.)

It's not the fantastic $49 each way some parts of the country are getting, but I'll take the $160 savings anyway!
