SW luggage question

I know there are a lot of SW experts here and hopefully can answer my question. We are going to Colorado next week to ski. I was going to take my boots and rent skis but now have decided to bring the skis too. When I look at the website it gives 3 checked baggage allowance in one place and 2 checked bags in another. Can I bring my skis and two checked bags too? Will I be charged anything for the ski bag. It says it is free but then it says it has to meet the free baggage rules. They list weight and length of bag. I know it won't be heavy but what about length. Has anyone taken skis and not paid for them? Thanks!
