Ok ... I am to check in on Wednesday - 16th - for my dh and myself....

Will I have to check in twice ... once for me and once for dh

Or is it both together?

Will I print 1 boarding pass for both of us or will it be 2 different passes?

How does it work?

I still don't understand....

One boarding pass per person?
You will need to check each of you in separately and print a boarding pass for each of you. You will also need to do this upon your return (cannot check in round trip). HTH!

One boarding pass per ticket.

One check-in per ticket.

I would like to know this too. We have a party of 8 travelling for the first time on SW. All 8 tickets are under the same confirmation number.

Travelling with us is my elderly mother with severe spinal stenosis (who is way too stubborn and proud to use a wheelchair, but has horrible balance and can't walk very well) and two children with disabilities. We would like to maximize our chances of getting A boarding passes so that we can at least seat one of the others with our three special needs travellers.

And although we could probably qualify for early boarding - our 3 special needs travellers with three companions and then the two other little kids, I really don't want to be the ones standing in pre boarding area with 8 people!! :goodvibes Also, it really is not that necessary as we can manage the disabilities. And we don't mind sitting behind the wing or farther back in the plane. We will all end up in the same place anyway :sunny:

Will I need to fire up all the laptops and desktops to do our 8 checkins at one time, or do you check in once for the confirmation number and it will then check in the entire party under that number?

We travel quite a bit, so do know about the one boarding pass per person, so I am assuming that if the checkin is by confirmation number that the computer will generate a separate boarding pass for each person under that number.

If the checkin is by person, then it is a moot point, we will get a boarding pass with each check in.

Thanks OP for bringing this question up. I had assumed check-in would be by confirmation number, but now you have me wondering.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I believe it is by number, but you need to check off each name that you are checking in when there is more than one in the party. So technically you check in once per reservation and get boarding passes for each person. :thumbsup2
Editing to add in: depending on how many people have already checked in it is possible for some members of the party to end up with A passes and some with B even though it's all one reservation number, so I would check in at exactly the 24 hour mark to minimize the chances of that.

You can check in by reservation # 24hours in advance online. You will need to print out a boarding pass for each passenger. Even though you will already have boarding passes, you should check in at the gate to get a pre-boarding pass. Pre-boarding is for people who need a few extra minutes to get settled on the plane. Unfortunately I've seen people get knocked over by others rushing through the gate, so definately take the pre-boarding. I have used it the last few years when I traveled alone with my DD5.

Thanks Cinderella Mom. I will rethink my strategy and chance being tarred and feathered by standing in the pre-boarding line with 8 people :goodvibes

I just need to print out the same boarding pass for my dh that I have for me?

Don't trust me on this, since I am asking questions on your thread so am clueless about SW.

But, if it is like the myriad of other airlines we have flown - the check-in system will generate each of you your own boarding pass after you check-in. With any airline, each passenger travelling must have their own boarding pass with their own name on it. You will need to show ID at security so they can match the ID with the boarding pass.

From what I understand from the answers here is that at exactly 24 hours before boarding, you can start logging into the Southwest check-in area.

You will check-in via your confirmation number. It will then list all your passengers under that confirmation number. You will check off each passenger - in your case, your DH and yourself.

You will then print out the boarding pass for each passenger.

Unless of course, you booked your DH and yourself separately and have two separate confirmation numbers. Then I assume you would need to check-in twice, once under your confirmation number and once under your DH's.

Correct me experts if I have this wrong.

Thanks!

I would sincerely hope that with your situation that no tar or feathers would show up.
Go for it, you definitely qualify for this perk.

I just flew SW to and from Chicago last week. Every person in our party had his/her own confirmation number. To do it, you have to enter one number, print the pass, then go back, enter the next number, print that pass, etc.

It depends on how you booked the tickets-individually or not. If you booked 2 tickets at once you will only have one confirmation number. :thumbsup2

Thanks all. I was mostly kidding about the tarring and feathering. But I have read some pretty strong posts here about people trying to abuse the preboarding area. Since the only readily visable person needing pre-boarding would be my mother, I can just see people assuming that all 8 of us are boarding with just my mother.

You know - that dreaded family where the aunts, uncles, kids, etc all think they can pre-board with the one eligible pre-boarder :goodvibes

I'm not sure why this is so difficult to understand.

One boading pass per person. This means everyone has their OWN boarding pass. You do not share boarding passes, just as you do not share tickets.

One boarding pass per flight.

Example - On a flight where you stay on one plane and have one flight number (even if it stops), you get ONE boarding pass. If you have to change planes, you get a boarding pass for each plane.

The same for a return flight.

You can just do this at the airport if this is too confusing.

I haven't flown in like 12 yrs and never had to do this....

I am sry if you ( some of you) are mad about my questions about checking in and how many ...

I can understand the confusion. Things have changed a bunch in the last 12 years and most especially since 911.
Southwest explains this really well on their site.
How you do this will depend on how you booked the reservation.
IF you booked everyone at once, you will put in your confirmation number, all the people on the reservation will show up. You then check off the names in the little squares and follow the instructions. ( I don't remember them).
When you hit print all the people on the reservation will receive a boarding pass.
Hope this helps and I for one am not upset with your question. It truly is not difficult and Southwest makes it very easy.

Don't be sorry I am very glad you brought this to my attention because I am flying out of Manchester and I am driving from Vermont I would have printed out one boarding pass and when we got there would have had to deal with that mess. I called dh and he told me to call sw and make sure and I did just that. She told me that everyone except babies need a boarding pass so thank you so much for saving me all that time and energy at the airport. I have never done the flying thing and this it my first time and I am not afraid of flying more then I am afraid I won't have what I need when it get to the airport.

yipppy to you for asking :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
