Calling All Coast to Coast Travelers! Two Domestic Airfare Sales in Prime Summer Vacation Time

Who says there are no good domestic airfare sales come summertime high season? We've found two that'll have you bouncing around the country with a little extra money in your pockets this summer (though the extra moolah will probably disappear once you have to gas up your rental car). One is a sale in the Southeast from Atlanta-based Delta Airlines that must be booked by June 1, and the other is a special travel companion fare from the discount honcho from Dallas, Southwest Airlines.

Punch up Delta's Southeast sale on its Web site and you'll see all the cities that are included in this "sale." We use "quotes" because not all of the prices seem all that great. (Sorry, but $198 round-trip between Charlotte and Orlando doesn't seem like all that fantastic a bargain to us.) The better prices for this sale are the long-distance journeys from the Southeast to the West and Northwest. Prices are good round-trip to or from the Southeast, so you can visit or vacate however you please.

Delta's Better Sale Prices, Round-trip:

Salt Lake City to Asheville, NC, Augusta, GA, or Savannah, GA $238
San Diego to Fayetteville, NC, Wilmington, NC, or Florence, SC $278
Atlanta to Portland, OR, or San Jose, CA $278
Seattle to Charlotte, Fayetteville, or Wilmington $278
Los Angeles to Asheville, Charlotte, Savannah, or Wilmington $278
Minneapolis to Asheville, Atlanta, or Charlotte $198

There are plenty of other cities involved in Delta's current promotion, but, as mentioned, some of the prices are merely average. Tickets for the sale to the Southeast must be purchased by Friday, June 1. There is a 14-day advance purchase required, and all travel must be completed by July 31.

The other sale we've found is from the bargain carrier that made it against the odds, Southwest Airlines. Southwest is usually the cheapest option connecting many cities even before it announces sales. For good measure, it has announced a summer sale that works for folks who don't mind traveling in twos. Called its "Take Along" special, the promotion allows for a companion to pay just $30 for each one-way leg when another passenger pays the regular economy round-trip price. That means two passengers flying round-trip from Chicago to Manchester, NH, for example, will pay a total of just $362, or $181/person (factoring in one passenger paying $30 each way). The normal price with a one-week advance would be a total of $428 for two round-trip tickets, or $214 per person. Similar savings are offered throughout the country for cities connected by Southwest.

The "Take Along" $30 fare is different from another of Southwest's current promotions, which offers $30 one-way tickets as a way of celebrating the airline's 30th anniversary. The cities where the $30 anniversary offers are valid changes from week to week, but they are usually within close proximity (Seattle to Boise, St. Louis to Tulsa, Dallas to New Orleans). The $30 "Take Along" companion fare, on the other hand, is good with any Southwest flight, except for those departing or landing in Orange County, CA, and Houston Bush International, TX.

"Take Along" fares are good for travel from June 5 to October 26, and you must buy your tickets (both of them at the same time) at least seven days before departure. Both passengers must check in and travel on all flights together, and at least one of the passengers must be 18 or older. Seats are limited and may not be available during busy travel times. Both Southwest's "Take Along" fares and its anniversary specials are only valid for online bookings. Go to www.southwestairlines.com and click on (appropriately) "Click 'N Save" to find out more.

Delta's Southeast Summer Sale fares can only be booked online at www.delta.com (click on "Southeast" under "Specials" for more information). Delta and Southwest's sale promotions are nonrefundable. Airport taxes, if applicable, are not added into the prices above.
