I have a couploe of questions regarding Sushi at Disney.
1. What places have the best sushi?
2. What kind of sushi would you recomend? (I have never had sushi and I am dying to try it)
3. I am on the dining plan. Can I get sushi on a snack or counter service credit?

I would like to know the answer to the first question as well. I really like sushi, and I think it would be fun to have it in WDW! :)

You might want to check out the menus of California Grill and Wolfgang Puck Cafe, they both offer sushi, but there are some restrictions with the DDP. If I remember correctly, the larger plates would be counted as entrees not appetizer.

I had the "Tuna Threeways" at California Grill and liked it a lot, but I found this to be a very innovative kind of sushi. So if this is your first time, you might want to get something more simple, like a sushi sampler which would be a great introduction. Here is a picture of my dish:

Actually, sushi is one thing that CG excells in, you could even ask to be seated at the sushi counter where you can watch the chefs prepare the sushi. When we were there, our server was very good in explaining the dishes and I think they would take really good care of you if you tell them that this is your first sushi experience. So, I would recommend CG!

Also the table service restaurant in Japan in Epcot is bound to offer sushi once it reopens. At the moment you can get sushi at Yakitori House in Japan in Epcot for a CS meal. However, I have read that this is not the best sushi.

The new TS service restaurant coming to AK, Yak & Yeti is supposed to offer sushi.

We've had it from the sushi bar at Wolfgang Puck's in Downtown Disney. It was excellent, and the chefs were really friendly. A great experience. My favorites are the good ol California roll, the spicy tuna roll, Dragon roll, and BBQ eel roll (don't knock it till you try it :) ).:)

Since you've never tried it, I do recommend maybe trying the California roll first, see if you like it, or a sampler like the PP said, then try some others.

I can't answer you're third question, cause I just don't know!! :goodvibes

Hands down Kimonos at the Swan has the best sushi at WDW. You may not use the DDP there.

1 - California Grill and Wolfgang Puck both have really good sushi. I always get the sushi sampler platter at CG when I go. Also, Matsunoma Lounge at the Japan Pavillion in EPCOT is very good too....it actually is our favorite these days just for sushi.

2 - as others have stated, simple California roll or tuna rolls would be safe. Also, salmon and tuna sushi (fish on top of rice) is pretty plain. Though for me, the eel was what got me to love sushi...and the eel roll at Matsunoma is worth my trip all by itself. The roll there is huge and the eel just melts in your mouth...totally awesome! My daughter and I were really bummed last month when we were in WDW and the restaurants at the Japan pavillion were closed.

3 - no idea.....

WARNING: Sushi can be very addicting...if you have it and like it; watch out...you'll want a lot of it. The good news is that it is good for you...the bad news is that it is generally pricey.

Thanks so much for all your help! I'm so excited about this trip and trying sushi!

I personally don't eat sushi, but DBF is a huge sushi fan and he LOVED the Tuna Three Ways at the California Grill. In fact, he ordered it both times we ate there on our last trip. At CG, you can order all of the sushis except 2 - one is the Yoshie's Deluxe Sushi Platter and I can't remember what the other one is. I also have a picture of Tuna Three Ways, but I'm not sure how to upload pictures to these boards, but if I figure it out, I'll be happy to post it here.

you are so right. I've had Wolfgang Puck's and Kimono's. Wolfgangs is good, but even they will tell you that the Japanese tourists go to Kimono's

Good luck with the sushi!! I would eat it every night if my pocketbook allowed (and I don't mean in Disney -- I mean all over).

I had it at Wolfgang's and was not thrilled with it. Am really looking forward to trying it at the CG this time around.

I have two things to tell you about sushi.

1) If you don't like one piece, don't give up. My boyfriend told me for years "I tried sushi, I just don't like it. He tried a couple different types of rolls and didn't like them. Then he found one he liked (a lobster roll) and now he even bugs me to go to sushi restaurants.

2) My rule of thumb with sushi is -- if I wouldn't eat it cooked, I won't eat it raw. I don't like calamari cooked (and I'm Italian so that's a major sin) so I won't try it raw.

ENJOY -- and you better give us a full report when you get back:goodvibes

I couldn't have said it better. But I've never tried Kimono's so in my
experience, the quality at Puck's sushi bar was very good, IMHO.
Kimono's has always been on my radar, but I keep forgetting to try it.

I am also a sushi lover and have not see it anywhere in Disney except for the fast food place in Japan in Epcot as some have mentioned already. the only choice there is the California Roll which isn't raw at all but you can at least sample what is just the beginning of what sushi has to offer.

I also love eel the most. I have to check out that lounge in the Japan pavillion. Do you have to make reservations?

Our favorite sushi place is the California Grill, just because their sushi is more interesting & innovative than the norm.

Our second favorite place is Kimonos - good, solid, fresh sushi, with a nice, quiet atmosphere if you get there early (before karaoke).

We used to like the sushi at Tempura Kiku, but they made some changes at some point between August 2005 and August 2006, and it became just like the takeout sushi you can get at a local grocery store.

Cheers!

I can't wait to get to Disney and try it. Although I am wondering if I should try sushi here at home before I go just so I know what to order. We have some friends who LOVE sushi and are amazed that neither one of us has tried it before. Thy said they would intriduce us to it. But who knows. I'll definately update the board once I try it and once I get back from trying it at Disney!
