Ill Manson Follower Susan Atkins Denied Parole
Terminally ill Charles Manson follower Susan Atkins denied parole in California
By LINDA DEUTSCH AP Special Correspondent
CHOWCHILLA, Calif. September 3, 2009 (AP) The Associated Press

(AP)Susan Atkins, the terminally ill Charles Manson follower who admitted stabbing actress Sharon Tate 40 years ago, lost what was likely to be her last bid for freedom Wednesday.

Atkins, who suffers from brain cancer, slept through most of the four-hour hearing during which her husband-lawyer pleaded for her release and families of victims of the Sharon Tate-*****nca killings urged that she be kept behind bars until she dies.

In a dramatic moment — one of the few in which Atkins opened her eyes — Atkins' husband, James Whitehouse, led her through a recitation of the 23rd Psalm, with Atkins concluding in a strong voice, "My God is an amazing God."

Debra Tate, sister of the actress who was 8 1/2 months pregnant when she was killed, told the parole commissioners that she would have a 40-year-old nephew if her sister had lived. She said of Atkins, "I will pray for her soul when she draws her last breath, but until then I think she should remain in this controlled situation."

Another of the speakers was Anthony DiMaria, a nephew of the slain Jay Sebring, who said that the trips to the parole hearing for his family members "send us back to hell year after year."

"I'm not here for Susan Atkins," he said. "I'm here for Jay Sebring. The only hatred I feel is for the crime."

DiMaria reacted angrily to a suggestion by Whitehouse that the commissioners should consider the cost to the state of housing Atkins at a time when she requires constant medical care. Whitehouse said it was costing $17,000 a month for her care.

"We are not here to balance the state budget," DiMaria said. "We are here because Susan Atkins sent nine people to their death."

Parole commissioner Tim O'Hara said that he and the other commissioner who presided over the hearing, Jan Enloe, based their decision heavily on the "atrocious nature" of the 1969 killings and said that Atkins never fully understood the magnitude of her crimes.

Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Pat Sequeira recounted the crimes in great detail and said: "As sad as Miss Atkins looks today, it pales against the crime scene photos. These were brutal horrible crimes."

Atkins, 61, had been expected to die of brain cancer over a year ago but continues to cling to life. She also had a leg amputated from cancer-related health issues.

She was denied compassionate release in July, 2008 after she was diagnosed and given only months to live. Wednesday's hearing at the Central California Women's Facility at Chowchilla was one of her required periodic parole hearings as a life prisoner. She was convicted of the seven Tate-*****nca murders, one of the most notorious mass murders in California history.

The gruesome murders that made the Manson cult infamous were discovered on Aug. 9, 1969, when a maid ran screaming from the home shared by Tate and her husband, director Roman Polanski.

Five people were killed in a ritualistic manner, including Tate, coffee heiress Abigail Folger, and celebrity hairdresser Jay Sebring. Two others were killed at another home. Polanski was not at home at the time of the slayings.

Atkins admitted stabbing Tate to death as Tate begged for her life and that of her unborn son. Atkins claimed she and other cult followers acted on orders from Manson and were on LSD.

It was Atkins who led police to arrest members of the Manson clan when she confessed to a cellmate after she had been arrested in a robbery.

At a hearing in 2000, Atkins acknowledged, "I sinned against God and everything this country stands for." She said she wanted to make amends for what she did.

Whitehouse, 46, has said his wife has made him a better person in their 21 years of marriage and should be released if for no other reason than to keep taxpayers from having to cover her hefty medical expenses.

Manson, Atkins and two other followers, Patricia Krenwinkle and Leslie Van Houten, were convicted and sentenced to death. The sentences were commuted to life when the death penalty was temporarily outlawed in the United States in the 1970s.

Although many life-term prisoners have come and gone from behind bars while Atkins has been incarcerated, none of the Manson killers has been paroled. Krenwinkle and Van Houten remain at the California Institution for Women at Frontera. They appear before parole boards every few years and ask for release. Manson, now 74, has stopped asking for parole.

O'Hara said Atkins would be not be eligible for parole for another three years.

Good. I don't care if she has cancer - she massacred those people. And Sharon Tate was begging for her life and the life of her nearly full-term child. She should be treated humanely as she lives out her days, getting mercy that she did not give.

Her husband/lawyer?!? :confused3 WOW, what a fa-reeeek that guy must be.

Yeah my dream girl is a woman that stabbed a totally innocent pregnant lady 40 times and cut out her unborn baby. OMG, talk about freaks in this world.

She deserves whatever she gets, one of the most infamous crimes in history. No sympathy whatsoever.

Do you guys know as an interesting side note to the Manson murders, I heard a while back that Charlie thought he was sending these people to kill a record company executive that had humiliated Charlie in refusing to give him a record deal. (Manson was an aspiring musician).

So this was actually a case of mistaken identity. Not that it matters at all, in any event an innocent person would have been brutally murdered, but just kind of interesting.

:sad2: He is out of his freaking mind, isn't he? There was an interview recently with a guard at the prison where Manson is (pretty sure it was a guard, could be the warden too). He said he had NOT DOUBT that if Manson was released, he would do it again.

There is a special on the History Channel on Labor Day - I guess in this interview, they were able to talk to the gal that cut a deal and didn't get prison time - was that Linda Kasabian?

Good. I'm glad she's staying in jail until she takes her last breath. She's already received a billion times more compassion than she gave Sharon and her poor baby. And a billion times more compassion than she ever deserved.

Satan will be glad to see her soon.

I guess her husband thinks the upsides to this marriage are:

1) You don't have to worry about a pop in visit.

2) You can cheat anytime you like with no fear of being caught, and

3) You always know where she is. :rotfl2:

4) And oh almost forgot, the very exciting conjegal visit sex, (just ask George Costanza how exciting that is.)

You're right. :thumbsup2

In all seriousness, he is probably just as twisted as she is, wouldn't you think?

I guess I can never understand why people in prison for very violent crimes often have pen pals, get married, etc. You also hear about all the letters that Scott Petersen gets in jail. He killed his wife and unborn child - and you want to be in a relationship with him?! WEIRD.

For what it's worth, here is what is on Wikipedia about Susan. She has been married TWICE while being in prison. :sad2:

She was married in 1980 to Donald Lee Laisure, a Texan claiming to be a multi-millionaire who would use his resources to help secure her freedom, but Atkins ended the marriage when it was revealed that many of his claims were false. She married a second time, in 1987, to a man 15 years her junior, James W. Whitehouse, who earned a law degree and represented Atkins at her 2000 and 2005 parole hearings. He maintains a Web site dedicated to her legal representation.

Apparently, Tex Watson, one of the other murderers, has said that she was bragging about killing Sharon and he was the one that actually did it, which I guess is some of the basis for their appeals. That and she is dying. Well boo hoo - sorry I'm not sympathetic. :headache:

No doubt, there are some scary weird peeps in this world.

I couldn't stand to be in the same room as a person that would stab a pregnant women and cut out a baby from her body, let alone MARRIAGE? :confused3 He's probably some twisted closet freak that likes super weird kinky things like snuf films and bondage porn or something, he's obviously the exact opposite of normal.

I'm glad to hear this. And I agree - her husband must be some kind of freak with serious mental issues.

I don't get this logic. I wouldn't think she has health insurance so isn't it a matter of the taxpayers paying for her care through DOC vs. Medicare/medicaid ?

Yes it was Linda Kasabian. She was granted immunity.

Hilarious that the name of the La Bianca family was blocked.

I have to angree with everyone here-- why should she deserve to go home and die in peace in her bed, when Sharon Tate and her unborn child were not granted that peace? They died in a horrible way, and Susan Atkins deserves the same...
