This is my first attempt at a trip report. I’ve read many and enjoy them all! DH and my friends at the Chicago board have encouraged me to chronicle our recent trip so here goes. I tend to be wordy so hopefully I’ll be able to keep this to a minimum, not likely though ;) !

What: Our first ever fall trip to WDW
When: Oct. 4-12
Where: AKV 1br club level, the last night in a regular 1br SV (couldn’t get that night on the club level)
Cast: Me, 41 and an obsessed Disney planner
DH, 41 and a lover of Disney but much more laid back and go with the flow
DD, 11 Tink fan and planner-in-training
DS, 8 has Autism, is very high functioning and LOVES WDW
DD, 7 Stitch fan and finally 48in with shoes!

We have to start with a little pre-trip background though I think. DH and I booked this trip back in December 2007 and decided not to say anything to the kids in case we decided to re-schedule, the “secret” is born :ssst: . We’ve been many times and decided to keep up the secret to add a new edge to this trip. Then airfares started rising so we booked our plane tickets in April, we were committed. The 2007-08 school year had them off 2 days the week we booked, we thought “perfect, a week in WDW and only miss 3 days of school”. Well, you guessed it the 2008-09 calendar comes out in May and they have NO days off that week! :sad2: Well, it would be around $800 to change weeks so there’s no turning back now. Fast forward to August, another crisis arises. I read on the DIS how other AKV club level guests are being notified that they are being moved due to exterior construction. The reports keep getting worse and no one really seems to know what is going on. I call and am told, no problem we’re not impacted. The very next day I get a call telling me we’re being moved to BWV. Less than 24 hrs after that another call that we’re not moving and staying at AKV!! AAHHHHH!

The days continue to fly by. ADRs - check, t-shirts made for the girls - check, treat bags and costumes made for MNSSHP - check, rental car – check, itinerary made (and changed a dozen times) – check. As the last weeks approach it is getting harder and harder to keep the secret but we stand firm. Teachers are emailed 3 weeks before the trip, no problems on that end (phew) and they are all aware it’s a secret. We finally get to the last week and serious cleaning and packing needs to be done. Thank goodness they’re in school for 6hrs a day!

The night before we leave we arrange for them to sleep over at their grandparents so we can actually pack. I’ve had “plane tickets” designed by a talented DISer on the design board so we print those, clip a MNSSHP map (sent to me by a great TGMer) and put them in a mailer envelope addressed to the kids. After lunch at the grandparents we sit them down and give them their “mail” with the video camera running. Thankfully DD11 reads the ticket and puts it all together and in an instant they are all screaming and hugging each other. Yeah! The response we were hoping for. Although there is a second of apprehension from the girls who will be missing their standardized testing but we assured them their teachers know we’ll be gone and that it will all work out.

We leave the grandparents on a high, everyone all smiles. Home to shower and put on their “plane” clothes and add a few extra carry-on things to their backpacks and then we’re off to O’Hare airport.

We live very close to the airport so the ride is short and uneventful. We are traveling with only carry-ons as I sent a box ahead with all of our liquids and gels. We couldn’t check-in on-line so we waited in a fairly short line to check-in. Security was not backed up and none of us were singled out for extra security thankfully. We still need to eat dinner but all we pass on our way to our gate is a Wolfgang Puck Café and a Mediterranean Café, neither high on our kids list. Mental note for next time - check where McDonalds is before heading to your gate. DH and DS trekked back to McDs and brought us back dinner.

This is when we start hearing announcements looking for volunteers to take a flight to Tampa as the Orlando flight is overbooked. It needs to be someone without checked luggage as they can’t pull anyone’s luggage. Hmmm, very interesting :scratchin . They were offering a voucher for a free RT ticket good for one year. Well, we decided it was too good of an offer to pass up so before I know it we’re high tailing it to the opposite end of the terminal to catch a flight to Tampa, 5 free RT tickets in hand. The Tampa flight ends up leaving early and arrives in Tampa 15min early. DHs brother has arranged a rental car for us while we were in flight. Our luck continues there, the agent upgrades us to a mini-van for the full-size price. It is now 10p and we still have to drive to WDW, thankfully it is an easy drive and there was NO traffic at that time of night.

Since the concierge staff have left I picked up our registration packet from the front desk and head up to our room on the 6th floor, we were in 6208. A one bedroom savannah view room at the far end of the hall from the lounge.

I unpacked as DH made up the beds for the kids. We all got to bed quickly as we were aiming for park opening at MK the next day and it was 11:30pm. :faint:

Up Next MK – where is everyone??

Wake up call came awfully early! It is an overcast day but it is hot and HUMID!! Kids are excited so they are up and ready quickly. Breakfast is in the lounge, cereal, muffins, fruit, milk, juice and the required Diet Coke for DH. We drove over to MK and parked in the AAA Diamond lot and took the monorail. There was no one directing or checking the AAA lot but there were also only a couple of other cars. We are coming down the ramp during the opening show and make it into the park on the heels of the opening crowd. No worries, we catch up to the crowds again at the Tomorrowland rope. DH heads straight to Astro with the kids and I collect FPs for Space. The kids then took a spin on the Indy Speedway :drive: and we headed to Fantasyland. We hit Pooh, Pan, Small World, the carousel, Snow White and headed back to ride Space with our FPs. Space doesn’t seem as rough to me as last year but once is still enough for DH and I so the kids ride again as the stand-by line was non-existent (posted wait 10min @ 11a but they were in and out in that length of time). By now it is around 11:15 and we’re hungry for lunch so we hit Cosmic Ray’s which is thankfully not crowded yet.

DD11 and I decide to share the chicken and ribs meal and she’s wanting to be ‘grown-up’ and desperately wants to order so I send her to that line with cash while I head to the burger line and DH takes the two younger ones to a table. I get DH and DS8 burgers and DD7 chicken nuggets and all the drinks and head to the table. DD11 is there looking confused and a bit upset :guilty: holding a tray with chicken nuggets?? She’s not sure what happened but insists she asked for the chicken/ribs combo. I head over to the line to find out what happened and they were more than nice, they got me a ckn/ribs combo and charged me the difference and told me to keep the chicken nuggets as they’d have to throw them away anyway. I wasn’t really looking to get anything free but wanted to know what happened so DD11 could learn for the next time.

After lunch we head to Haunted Mansion, a favorite of DH and mine. No wait at all and a great ride as usual. We then headed to BTM and picked up FPs as it was posted as a 30min wait. Splash was closed due to technical difficulties so we headed to Pirates pirate: . The CMs were directing everyone to the left line but then people were switching over to the right inside. We stayed left and literally walked right onto a boat :thumbsup2 but there was a line on the right! You should listen to the CMs if they’re telling you which way to go! Outside there was a Photopass photographer doing the pics with the imaginary Capt’n Hook so I had the 3 kids in one picture. Next time I’ll have them each go alone as I think it would have turned out better. While we were waiting our turn DH went and got everyone ice cream :mickeybar . DD7 finished first (because I ate half of her Mickey bar, lol) and she wanted a pic with Hook and Smee. There were only a couple of people in line so we headed over while the rest finished their ice cream. DS8 joined her in the pic since he finished. We headed back to BTM to use our FPs. Splash is back up but it is a 35min wait at 2p. I don’t do more than 20min wait so much to DD7s dismay we pass on Splash. It was a hot and humid day and we were running out of gas so we decided to head back to the resort to swim. On the way past Jungle Cruise DH checked the wait, mis-reads the time as 5min so we hop in line. It actually said 15min wait and it was every minute of it. Oh well, the kids weren’t complaining so all was well. After that we headed out and made our way back to our car and AKL.

The kids are having a grand time in the pool but it starts to rain. Thankfully nothing more comes of it and doesn’t last long. The kids convince DH and I to join them, they say the water is great. It is FREEZING but is OK once you’re in. The pool wasn’t crowded at all. We have a “surprise” scheduled so we drag the kids out of the pool around 4:30p. On the way to the room we stop by the lounge and get some rice krispy treats, brownies, cookies and drinks.

We showered and dressed and headed back down to the lounge for the evening offerings. YUMM! There were 3 hot offerings (chicken wings, carrot ginger soup and little pastry cups with something yummy) along with two kinds of hummus, dip, marinated olives and carrot sticks, pj&j uncrustables, gummy bears and a few other offerings I can’t remember. I had read before our trip that the lounge offerings weren’t really enough to make a meal but after sampling a little of everything along with a glass of South African Shriaz and other drinks no one was hungry for dinner, lol. We then headed over to the campground for our ‘surprise’ Haunted Carriage Ride.

We arrived at FW and parked in the lot, after some confusion with which bus would take us to the check-in area for the carriage ride we finally arrived, with 30min to spare! Note to anyone going to FW, be sure to wear/bring bug spray!! We got eaten alive in that 30min we were waiting, me especially!

The ride was fun and cute. A little spooky, our kids liked it but DS8 doesn’t want to do it ever again. They play the story of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and there is a surprise at the end. I won’t tell all but if anyone is interested in specifics send me a pm. The ride lasted right around 30min. When we finished we headed over to the FW beach to await Hallowishes. The kids played in the sand and had a great time waiting. It turned out to be a beautiful evening, a bit cool even. Surprising after such a hot and sticky day.

Quite a crowd gathered for the fireworks, they piped in the music and we had a perfect view. It was a fabulous fireworks show. We cut out quickly after it ended, the EWP started shortly after but we’ve seen that before so we headed back to the bus to the parking lot. On our way back we encountered an armadillo! The kids got the biggest kick out of that. If you ask DS8 about that night, that’s what he’ll tell you about. Not the carriage ride or fireworks but he played in the sand and saw an armadillo  .

The trip back to AKL was uneventful, left the car with the valet (free thanks to DVC) and headed up to bed after a full first day. I brought my pedometer on this trip out of curiosity, today was over 16,000 steps and just over 8mi! WOW! :faint:

Up next – Epcot and learned NEVER take the bus!

I'm in sounds like a great start to the trip. Free tickets hmmm is there another disney trip in the future?

Actually, we have a trip booked for June which we planned to drive but now maybe not. Then again since we planned to drive maybe I should plan another vacation............

Sounds like a great trip. Can't wait to read more. AKV sounds really nice - hope I get to stay there soon.

We really loved AKV, the resort is beautiful and so much to do there.

Hi disneygal!! Our mornings are always packed, kind of commando :rolleyes1 . DH made me promise though that our next trip will be more relaxed  .

Another early alarm this morning for Epcot opening. It’s a gray morning, overcast but still warm and humid. We hit our usual breakfast in the lounge before heading out to the car. We arrive at Epcot by 8:30a and don’t even ask about the Diamond lot since we’re in the front row anyway. No wait at bag check, there are lots of people lined up at the turnstiles but they are only at a couple of them. There is no one at the ones on the far right, but then again there are no CMs over that way. Well, they open those turnstiles too and you should have seen the people run. It was kind of funny to see people being so crazy to get in only to be held up at Innoventions for the official opening. I go ahead with the main pack to get Soarin FPs while DH makes a bit more of a civilized trek with the kids. I get the FPs and wait for DH and kids to catch up. We head into the standby line and have very little wait. We’re in row 3, not our preferred seat but we are in the center group so not too bad. DH points out one guy that was crazy running to the turnstile this morning is on the same ride with us, so much for his craziness  . We’re off by around 9:25a, can’t get another FP yet so we head to Living with the Land. DDs are not happy, they don’t like this “ride” but DS LOVES it, not sure why but he does. I like all the greenhouse stuff and find it interesting. As we head out of the Land around 10a I see the standby for Soarin is 25min, we head over to Imagination. There is no one there, straight on with the car to ourselves. Played around in the labs at the end and sent off some funny pics to the grandparents before heading out for a snack, popcorn and drinks in the shade. The sun has come out and it is HOT. We opt to skip the Seas because even though we love Turtle Talk, DS8 gets very upset when not chosen for interaction so we opt to avoid that stress and head to the other side. The wait for TT was 60min :scared: so we grab FPs and head to MS. DH and DD11 head for the green side and DS and DD7 gladly skip it. Much to DS and DDs surprise I let them take off their socks and shoes and play in the squirt fountain there. It is not my usual mode to let them get wet but I figure it’s hot and sunny and I’d rather let them get wet than listen to them complain the whole time we’re waiting for DH and DD11. They have a blast and when DH and DD11 return we head to WS and our lunch ADR at Rose and Crown.

We arrive for lunch a bit early but are seated right away. One note, if you’re planning to eat at R&C be sure to bring a sweater! It was FREEZING :cold: in there. Poor DD7 was still a bit damp and was like an ice cube. Service was good, food was a little slow but good. DH had fish & chips, DD11 (a Disney adult) had the soup/sandwich combo, I had the Shepard’s Pie and both kids had mac & cheese. DH, DD11 and I share all around, if anyone was watching they’d have laughed as the plates kept getting passed around the table. DS8 cleaned his plate but DD7 only ate about half, I think she was just too cold to enjoy it. We got the kid sundaes “to go” and headed outside to defrost, which didn’t take long. We then headed to TT with our FPs and Soarin with FPs thankfully as the standby is a 65min (we got row 1-yeah) and finally Spaceship Earth. The kids really, really liked the new version.

It is hot and humid so we decide to head back to the resort for a swim and rest. We plan to return for Illuminations and maybe a bit of F&W. We have a front row parking spot so we decide to take the bus back to AKL for our break that way our car will be conveniently close after Illuminations. Well, we have some kind of bus curse and it is the reason why we have a rental car on this trip. We trek all the way to the farthest possible bus stop and wait and wait and wait and wait. Two buses come for each resort we can see and even AK which is closing in an hour. When the second AK bus pulls up I asked the driver to please call someone and let them know that we’ve been waiting 30min for a bus to AKL. Thankfully a few minutes later a bus shows up but we’ve wasted 30min standing with tired kids who want to go to the pool.

We continue with bad luck when we get back to the resort, housekeeping has only just arrived at our room at 4p! Rather than the much needed rest we planned, we toss on our suits and head down to the pool. Well, that was closed due to storms in the area. So we have no room to go to and the pool is closed. Hmmm, what to do. We decide to check out a bit of the resort. DD11 and DS8 have fun checking out the animals playing in the rain from one of the outside observation areas, only problem is we have no towels and when they come inside they’re freezing in the air conditioning. We make our way back to the 6th floor and thankfully housekeeping is done and we change back into clothes.

We hit the lounge for the evening offerings again tonight, the hot offerings I think were samosas, African stew and meatballs. Everything was way yummy and again no one was asking for dinner. We head back down to the bus stop and true to form we wait 25min for a bus and it is packed, thankfully we have seats. DH makes me promise to resist the urge to give the buses a try in the future and to stick with our rental car, no arguments here. It is still sprinkling when we get to Epcot so we assure the kids that TT won’t be running since it’s raining so we hit Spaceship Earth again. The kids are indeed hungry so we stop at Electric Umbrella for them. We decide to just kill time in Mousegears until Illuminations. Of course as we head to WS to get a spot for Illuminations, we hear the cars whizzing around the track at TT, who knew they’d still run in the rain. Oh well, we continue on to WS and get a good spot in Canada, we’re not up at the railing but we have an unobstructed view and it is a wonderful show as usual.

We head out of Epcot to our gloriously close car and are back at AKL in time for the nighttime desserts. Of course we stop for a cookie and a cake before bed. Today was 8.22 miles and 16,288 steps, no wonder we’re so tired!

Next up Sleep-in and MNSSHP.

Great TR!! Would love to have seen the kids' reaction to their surprise - that must have been so hard to keep for so long! I would have been afraid one of the teachers would have slipped up but they were fantastic.

It is so cute that your son would remember the armadillo over everything else that night :rotfl2:

Any hopes of pics being posted? :3dglasses

found your report and enjoying it.

sorry i missed you at the motherland last month.

Just found your TR. That's cool that you got free tickets. That drive from Tampa to Orlando isn't bad, especially at night.

My DS also gets upset when he doesn't get picked.
