WE are taking a last minute trip to DW on the 25th of Sept. Since its so last minute, I've decided to wait and surprise the kids that we are going. The 25th is also my son's 5th birthday. My DS really wants to go to Build a Bear for his b-day. I was thinking of picking him up from school and then picking up my DD. She usually takes the bus but I was going to tell her we were picking her up to go to Build a Bear. Once they were in the car we'd head to the airport instead. I'm just not sure how or when to tell them. Also DH and their baby brother are not going so I'd like to take the kids home to say goodbye to them.

Believe it or not, I'm a little concerned my DS will be upset that were not going to Builld a Bear (he's not a great transitioner) so I'm not sure if I should take him there the day before. Any great ideas on how to tell them? Also we'll be on the plane from 5-8 so any ideas on how I could still do a little something to celebrate his birthday?

I dont think you should tell them you are going to Build A Bear. Like you mentioned, I think that my DD4 would be upset we were not going there too LOL. She's not very good at transitions like that either yet. Take your son to B-a-B the day before and come up with another scenario for getting them to the airport.

I definitely wouldn't tell him your going to Build-A-Bear and then go the airport. I would tell him you have a special birthday surprise and then go to the airport. I would bring some small wrapped presents (Dollar Store) for him to open and play with on the trip down.

Thanks for your replies. I agree, I think I'm going to change my plan and just take him to Build a Bear the day before and then tell him we're doing something special on his actual b-day but its a surprise.

Anyone have a great ideas on how to tell them??

The presents for the plane are a great idea. He has a Leapster so I might buy a new game for him to play on the plane as well. Anyone know if I can bring wrapped presents through security?

i would tell them now that build a bear will be closed that day, let them get used to this idea now, then tell them that you are actively thinking of somehting to do instead. that you dont know what it will be, but you arent taking requests(thats very important!). then that morning i9 would tell them you thought of soemthing, but its a surprise and again, no ones allowed to guess!

sorry didnt see this reply, thats a good idea too. to do it before.
i would tell them by bringing them to the airport and having tshirts for them to put on. will they get that theyre going to disney from tshirts?

i should think because they are going through the scanners that you could bring wrapped gifts, but give a quick call to the airline to be sure. it would sure be awful if you had to unwrap it at security. or you can have them open them before you head through security.

We drove to Detroit and told Dd we were spending the week there over Labor Day. We woke her at 5am and gave her a letter from Mickey. Poor chiid read it 3x but didnt comprehend that we were going to Disney right then! She was excited when she figured it out with Dh coaching her but she was not awake enough to jump around and be excited. On the plus side she did get a good nights sleep before we left!

We just surprised our DS-5 with a trip over Labor Day weekend.

To "reveal" the surprise, we had a Disney Enchanted Phone Call from Mickey tell him he was going on a trip. You can pick from a bunch of different characters and the message can be about a birthday, trip, etc. (If you sign up for Disney's Movie Rewards, one of the perks is a FREE one of these phone calls.)

We then had his backpack filled with surprises for the trip - a plush Mickey and Goofy, the Star Wars game for his Leapster, and some Disney coloring books - all things to reinforce that, yup, we're leaving the hotel in 20 minutes to get on our plane!!

Whatever you do, have tons of fun!!

Hi. We woke our kids up the morning of the trip, with the video camera ready in my husband's hand. I was wearing a tshirt (made by an awesome DIS creator!!) that said SURPRISE - we are going to DISNEYWORLD today!! It had a pic of the disney gang in the background. The kids went nuts as they noticed what was on my shirt!!!!! We also made shirts for them that said "Going to Disneyworld today" for them to wear on the airplane. For the plane, we took sticker books and portable video players to keep them occupied. Have fun!!
