I have planned a trip for myself, my stepson(14) and my niece(4) for December for 6nights/7days at ASMo, park hopper plus, and dining package. It is nearly paid off and I booked it in mid January so I am thinking that I can afford to take my mom, sister and nephew(3) along too. So my question is should I tell them that I am treating them or just book it and tell them when it is close???? My mom is retired and dad won't care, my sis gets her vacation on her anniversay day in Sept so she will have plenty of vacation time and her hubby will be ok with it. My hubby has been there several times and don't care to go again(not sure what's wrong with him :))

I would tell them so that your sister is able to get off during your scheduled vacation.
Maybe you could surprise them and give them hints in telling them that you will treat them to a vacation.

I was thinking, Surprise them. But maybe tell them in case it conflicts with anything they might have to do at that time. I think just the gesture alone is a wonderful surprise!

Be devious. Think of something you can trick them with so that they all keep the time free. Then you can suprise them nearer the time.

I surprised my family with DLP 5 days before we were leaving. They were all "Gobsmacked" and it was really worth bottling up the excitement for. I had booked it 9 months before. I have joked about it since with dh saying it was like having a secret baby.

I told my dh that I was on a "Scrapbooking" holiday so that he would take time off work to look after the family while I was away. (Just about everyone else knew about it.)

The only "Down side" to a surprise is that they won't have time to get excited about it. If it's their 1st trip I think the excitement might outweigh the surprise.

Happy deciding!!

Maybe I'll just wait until Sept 1 to tell them since that is when DS will be able to schedule her vacation time. Then they will still have 3 months to get excited!!! It will be a first trip for my stepson, my niece and nephew, first time for sis since she was a really small child(about 30yrs ago) and my mom went with me last November when she tagged along with me on a business trip (2 days of commando in the parks). So all should be excited.

If you do surprise them, the idea of 3 months out is a good one (but I don't think more than that would hurt). We told our kids about our trip (we leave Friday) in early December, and they have been watching the planning video Disney sends out OVER and OVER and OVER. They have been enjoying our trip for 5 months and we haven't even left yet! I'm excited for you all--what a great thing to do!

Maybe you could let your sister's husband in on it as well as your dad and they can make sure nothing else gets planned. Your sister's husband could maybe go to her boss and request those days off for her without her knowing - therefore, keeping the surprise?? Just an idea.
