My husband and I used to live in SC. Last summer we moved to WV - 8hrs away from his best friend. He was closer to him then any other friend in his life. Needless to say the move was EXTREMELY hard for him. He hasn't seen him in over 7 months. I was thinking that if I could get off half day on friday (be home by 11) and call his boss (very close to her) and have her send him home at 11:30 we could leave around 12 and be in SC by 8pm. I don't have the money to buy plane tickets so we would have to drive. That would give him friday night, all day saturday, and until late afternoon on sunday. Do you think that's too much travel for such a short trip. He has been wanting to see him for awhile now and we're not sure if we'll be able to get down there around Christmas like we had hoped.

Personally I don't like to drive that far for a weekend. If you and your hubby don't mind it and you're not taking kids with you, go for it. It will be a good pick me up for your hubby. It's really sweet of you to plan such a nice weekend for him.

we used to do it once every few months (whenw e couldn't get cheap flights), we drove up from London to Scotland.....and most of the time that was us leaving after work! Never regretted it once......that fix always cheered me up

it depends on the person, really. when dh and I were first dating I couldn't figure out what to get him for his birthday. I decided to surprise him with a trip to camden yards...he'd always wanted to see a game there. unfortunatley we only had 2 days (one night) total for the trip (we lived in boston, a 7 or 8 hour trip each way). no problem! we drove down that morning, checked into the hotel, had and walked around the inner harbor and had lunch, then eventually headed for the game. the next morning we planned to go to the aquarium...we did that, paddled boats around it, then decided on a quick trip to dc. greg had never been, never seen the white house, capitol, etc, so we figured we were so close we'd just do a quick run thru. we parked a bit further away than we should have, but ran to the mall, ran the length of the mall, up the steps of the capitol (almost directly into ted kennedy as a matter of fact), back down the mall, into the natural history smithsonian for a brief minute, then back to the car. we got home around 2am I think and we both had to work the next day. we were exhausted but it was the best trip!!!

so for us, yes, we would do it (if we could without the kids). but some people aren't into that...hard to tell, which fits your dh more.

I think it sounds like a wonderful surprise. I hope that your DH appreciates it (and you!)

I too think it would be a wonderful surprise. Maybe you should clear it with his boss ahead of time, to make sure there is nothing important going on that afternoon. (or Monday either in case he is worn out from the trip)

that is very sweet of you to do this for your dh. You might want to make sure that his best friend don't have any plans for the weekend so he can spend time with your dh before you drive 8 hrs.:D

too much travel? nope its what Im doing this weekend.
LOL my mom lives 7 hours away and we actualy do this quite a bit leave on a Friday come home on a Sunday.

I think good friends and family are worth it :)

Have fun. I think its a great surprise for your dh! :)

Id go for it!
I have a friend who lives in Rochester NY which is about a 7 hour ride. We have done the weekend there a couple times, once we even had a 2 yr old with us and I was pregnant. She comes home here once in a while, doing the drive with her 4 kids! It can be worth it to see friends. :D
