Hi Everyone - We are booked for June 9th - 16th. I am still trying to decide whether or not we should do the DP. Can anyone tell me about this "holiday surcharge" I keep reading about? Do our dates apply? Also what is it? How much extra is it? And finally has Disney lost its mind? Everything is expensive enough. They really have some nerve if thing is for real!

As long as people are willing to pay, there's no such thing as 'expensive enough'. :)

Many if not most resorts and resort areas raise prices around the holidays. It's nothing specific to Disney, and certainly nothing new. The unusual thing is that Disney considers at least part of June to be a holiday. They appear to be defining 'holiday' as 'busy time'.

In business, you charge what the market will bear. If restaurant bookings start dropping off in June, the surcharge may well go away. If restaurants continue to be fully booked with the surcharge, it'll stay. Your option is to vote with your wallet. If you don't want to pay the surcharge, you can eat offsite, or schedule your vacation at a surcharge-free time.

Here is the information on the Seasonal Surcharge:

Seasonal Disney World Dining Information

During seasons of high demand, Disney raises the prices at most of the prix fixe restaurants.

Below are the restaurants and dates when you can expect to pay more. On average, it's $4.00 more per person ages 10 and up, $2.00 more per child ages 3 -9.

December 16, 2008 - January 3, 2009
April 5 - April 18, 2009
May 24 - July 11, 2009
Restaurants:

1900 Park Fare
Akershus
Biergarten
Boma
Cape May Cafe
Chef Mickey's
Cinderella's Royal Table
Crystal Palace
Garden Grill
Hollywood and Vine
Liberty Tree Tavern (dinner)
Ohana
Trails End
Tusker House
NOTE: This list is subject to change without notice and does not exclude other dining venues. There is no impact on guests using the Disney Dining Plan.

Disney started the holiday surcharge a few years ago and it seems to keep expanding. It's no longer "holiday" but seasonal. Prices go up at peak seasons, same as room rates. You'll see that the surcharge really only affects the buffets & all you-can-eat family style restaurants.

Hi Lynne - I noticed you are in King of Prussia - I am right in Gilbertsville (small world) Anyway I appreciate your response; do you happen to have any specifics aboout the surcharge? Is it just certain TS restaurants or all? And if you do have the DP then it is included?
We are really on the fence about the plan this trip as two of our children are considered "disney adults".

Thank You - this answers my question-I am trying not to obsess over the DP situation. I should not get it as an experiment to see how much we would actually save or not.

Does anyone know HOW MUCH it goes up. Last year I just avoided all the buffets(and ate very well by the way) but I would like to try Tusker House for Breakfast- but how much more is it going to cost me in July?

You're welcome :goodvibes We've only used the DDP once and that was partly because of the holiday surcharge. Like you, both of my kids are "Disney Adults", so overall we do better without the plan --at least until DS starts eating like a teenager :lmao:

If you read the info in the post above, it goes up on average $4 for adults & $2 for kids. When is your trip in July? The seasonal surcharge only goes thru July 11th.

first week so we'll get hit with it. Last year I thought it was higher than $4 but I could be wrong. That's why I was questioning. We are a family of 6 so while $4 isn't much but an extra $20 for breakfast does often put it off the list.
