Just a little vent or I am going to break down! I lent someone over $100 this past March...they wrote me a check that day and said they would let me know when to cash it. I knew it probably wouldn't be until the end of April. Mid-May I talked to them and reminded them I still had this check. They said they forgot and would give me a call to cash it. Well..last week I contact them again...I really need the money now...it's very important that I get it to put towards a hefty bill I have to pay on Tuesday. I ask them if I can cash it on the 6th so it will clear my bank. They say they will get the cash for me on the 6th instead. So I say OK, I'll call on the 6th and figure out when we can meet up to get the money. I call last night at 5pm when I was on my way home and left a message to call me last night to set up a time to meetup last night or today. I don't hear anything from them all night. I just called again...answering machine again...

The are not the type of people to not give the money back, but I stressed how important it is for me to get this money this weekend...so if they don't have it I would hope they would have told me so I could make other arrangements...now it is too late. I feel like I am held hostage...I can't leave to go anywhere because I have to wait for them so I don't miss the call.
Sorry...I know it's all my fault for getting myself into a situation where I *need* the money this weekend...but I can't help but be angry that they didn't return my call.

Thanks for listening!

I would TELL them I'm depositing the check. It'll usually clear on your end and if they don't have the money, it'll cost them. Sorry you are getting hosed!

It does sound like they are dodging you. That sucks.

My grandmother always told me, never lend anything to anyone, if you need to have it back.

I thought that if I cash it and they don't have the money, it gets removed from my account. I've had that happen in the past with a bad check someone wrote me years ago. Hmmmm...maybe I should call the bank. :)

If you live close to the bank the check is drawn on, I would call the bank daily if needed to verify funds. When the funds are available I would personally cash it, not deposit it.

My bank, for example, guarantees to cash everything up to $400 over what I have in my account. So If I accidentally bounced a check, it will still go through as long as it isn't over $400 bucks. Now they would charge me if I did that and I haven't ever used it. But just letting you know that many banks will go ahead and process it. Then again, if your person has a history of not having money in his account then you might have a hard time.

But somebody else made a good point. I'd go there everyday or every PAY day and try to cash that check at his/her bank.

This is what I would do . Then it's their problem I would think they would have some money in their account or wait until Fridays and hope they have Direct Deposit and you catch that.

Worse outcome is they don't ask you to be a loan office for them anymore.

I would go to the bank the check was issued from and cash it. Then deposit the cash in your bank.

Will the bank let you cash it if there isn't enough money in the deadbeat's account?

Alot of bank accounts have it set up so that if there is not enough money in the checking they withdraw it from the savings. Its worth a shot.

Banks ususally only extend this credit if you are a excellent customer and a regular depositor.

Can you cash it from the other persons bank if you aren't a member?

I would take the check to their bank and try to cash it. I wouldn't mention it to the "friend" though, your friend might try to put a stop payment on the check.

Yes. DH and I did this a lot when we were DJs in grad school. If we had a client that seemed a little dodgy we would always cash the check at their bank.

Personal checks are only good for 6 months I think. I would go to their bank and cash it before you can't.

Thanks everyone. I will have to find out where this bank is. I am not familiar with it. I called and left 2 messages today...still no phone call. :confused3 I would never have expected this from them.

Exactly. I'm sorry to say, I doubt you will ever see it. Chalk it up to experience and move on.

If I lend money, I do it with the mindset that in my mind, it's an unspoken gift. If they pay it back, great, but I never expect it. It's better on the blood pressure that way! ;)
