Over a year ago I was laid off. Being the sole breadwinner of the family I was obviously upset. I was able to get unemployment and with that and savings we were making it. I found my silverlining because I got to spend the summer with DS who was going into kindergarten and DD 3. I was able to go to their schools and fieldtrips.

I came to this board and learned tips on couponing and saving money.

In February I got a wonderful contract position that allowed me to stay at home and earn a living. I worked hard and was able to get our savings back up to 8 mos of basic living expenses.

I just found out that volume is back down and was given a two week notice. Now our living is gone. I'm so scared. I can't see the silver lining. I see no money and having to leave my precious kids again, if I can even find work at all.

I'm not looking for pity, I know there are lots and lots of people worse off than us. I just need to find my silver lining. I believe there is one, I just need some support that I'll be able to find it.

Good luck with finding work you'll like. Things will work out.

Is there a reason that your SO doesn't work to support your family? Or does she/he?

You've been lucky to spend time with your kids while they are young and have enjoyed a lot of firsts. Not many people get that chance. Keep those memories close, but know that going out to work and support them is the best thing for them now. You will all get used to it after a time.

I know that with us, each time hubby has left a job (usually by choice, but two times now b/c of financial decisions of the company (same company!)) something really amazing has come up. This time, although it took almost 2 months of interviews (they had that much notice before the dept closed), at the last minute he got into his dream company. It's contract work, but his foot is in the door.

So something like that could be on the way for you. I sure hope so!

:grouphug: Chin up! You will be okay!:thumbsup2 Why don't you look into working in your 5 yr. old's school system? The pay isn't usually great, but it's very nice to have off when your children do. Also, our school systems offer preschool classes for little ones. Part of the class consists of students who receive public assistance, but the other students' parents pay OOP. The programs are usually very good, too, because they must follow strict gov't. guidelines and have very solid curriculum.

Good luck to you. I know that you can do this and that things will work out well.:goodvibes

Just to give you a little hope.. last year we had a really hard time seeing any kind of silver lining at all..

My DH worked for Linens N Things then his friend offered him more money to get out of retail and to use his analytical skills in.. the mortgage industry (pre blow up). While he was learning the job everything blew up so he was out of a job very quickly with no severance.

We got very worried when nothing seemed to be coming his way. He went immediately to retail and nothing was coming up there even and we panicked! Finally a retailer was willing to interview him (after at least 75 applications to anywhere), and being the great guy he is he took the job they offered for 1/3 less pay.

We had trouble seeing any kind of silver lining, it was horrible and he had to work insane hours. We finally found it though when Linens N Things declared bankruptcy. He would have had to compete with 10 other people for positions in this metro area had he stayed there!

It may not be ideal where he is now, but our income has gone back up and he didn't have to compete with others. The company he is with is very stable too!

So while it is hard to see, there is a silver lining in anything that happens, you just have to look for it!
