Superman???

My wife and I saw it on Friday and didn't like it. I took issue with a ton of things in the movie, and there were some stupid inconsistencies. Like (highlight to read):

So, Superman kills Zod in the end because Zod is about to kill about four people with his laser vision. Yet, Superman basically committed genocide when he killed the fetuses of his own people. And, Superman didn't seem too concerned with all of the potentially life-ending destruction he and Zod were causing as they had an aerial battle which involved them running into buildings.

It's one of the worst live-action Superman movies, in my opinion.

We saw it Friday. My husband loved it, I didn't. I thought the action scenes were SO drawn out and long, especially the end. It was enough already. And unlike the other movies, like Iron Man and The Avengers, it didn't grab my heart. I really enjoyed the back story of Superman as a young boy, but other than that it was my least favorite of the superhero movies. I really, really wanted to like it, but I didn't.

I agree with some of the above about the fight scenes being way too long and repeated. DH took issue with some of the inconsistencies with Superman's original story. We much prefer the past Superman movies. Personally, I had liked Superman better than others because the movies were tamer. This one was too dark and violent for my preferences.

As for language, there is some, mainly when he is being bullied in school, but DD11 did not catch any of it because she commented she hadn't heard any. I had checked commonsensemedia.org before going, so I knew what to look for.

We saw it yesterday for Father's day and we all really enjoyed it. The last few fight scenes tended to drag on a bit though, how many times can you get thrown into a building with nobody dying? But other than that, I thought it was the best Superman movie thus far and a good first movie for a series. They did a lot of background and it gave the story more depth. It definitely is not as hokey as previous Superman movies have been. I'm a huge Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder fan so I anticipate the movies to just get better as they go along.

I thought it was amazing. Best movie I've seen this year, and that includes Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness (both very good). I know it's hasn't gotten good reviews. I don't care. I loved it.

Superman's origin has been tweaked at least five times since 1939. Three times since 1986.

I like Henry Cavill as Superman and liked the casting of the entire film. Russell Crow was really good and the beginning of the film was well done. BUT, overall, I was disappointed with this film. It was as least 30 minutes too long and the monotonous battle scenes were just too long. The last sequence was ridiculously long, really to the point of being boring. I loved the Dark Knight series, but this was no Dark Knight. I didn't feel any emotional connection to the main characters - except his parents when Krypton was falling. The editing and flashbacks were so choppy it was hard to get connected to the human element of the story. The movie was just okay for our family, not something we would run out and want to see again or purchase the movie - as with the Avengers or Iron man or the Dark Knight series - or even Star Trek Into Darkness, which was surprisingly fantastic. Hopefully, the movie will at least be a good set up for a decent sequel.

Of the three mentioned, "Into Darkness" is the best movie. "Man of Steel" was just awful, and "Iron Man 3" was trite and boring.

"Iron Man 3" is basically "The Incredibles" but a whole lot less fun.

We saw it Friday and it was really good. I did think it was about 30 minutes too long though. No bad language or sex though. It is violent though.

I agree with this, my cousin and I said exactly the same thing

I just went to see it, and I thought it was enormously boring. I love superhero movies, but I thought this one had so little humanity in it--and almost all of that was provided in the flashback. The last 45 minutes were mind-numbing. I wasn't sure why I was supposed to care about most of the characters, other than the longstanding attachment I have to them outside of the movie. I felt like the beginning was all prologue, and then suddenly we were meeting the Big Bad, and the middle was all filler. Ten minutes off the ridiculous fight spent with a quiet moment with the characters in the middle would have made all the difference.

However, Zach Snyder's biggest problem, always, is that he puts more value on the aesthetic than on character development. 300 might have been beautiful, but the characters were one-dimensional afterthoughts. Same is true, unfortunately, with most of Superman. One of the wonderful things about the early Superman movies is that there was a sense that people, and not just People as a Species, were important. People are absolutely not important in this movie, with very few exceptions: it lacks humanity.

We loved Iron Man 3, we saw it twice and the kids want to see it a third time before it goes off the big screen. We will definitely be adding it to our movie collection. I had such high hopes for Man of Steel and "just knew" we would all love it, I guess I hyped it up too much in my mind. I seriously hope they do justice to this franchise with a better sequel.

Agreed on Star Trek Into Darkness. I've seen it 3 times, and I'll be amazed if anything tops it for me this year.

And I also loved Iron Man 3.

I really liked Man of Steel, but I see where the complaints are coming from too. It definitely could have lightened up the tone a bit, at least. I thought it was an improvement over Superman Returns (which has not aged well at), but could have used some of that movie's subtleties.

I think one of my problems with Man of Steel is that it lacked exactly what Superman immediately brings to mind: Truth, Justice, and the American way.

We didn't get to see a lot of hero scenes involving the little things that come to mind when thinking about Superman. It was a little too SciFi for my tastes; I mean, I know we have to suspend that a man can fly. And he does, but the rest of the story was odd. The whole Russell Crowe thing was a stretch, too. (I edited out some spoilers here.)

Someone else online they liked how they handled Kryptonite, and I'll have to disagree there as well, without giving any spoilers.
