Super tacky or nbd???

When my kids were toddlers, I would travel with an assortment of ziplock bags on me! Never fails at any character meal they would be so occupied with the characters and not eat their meal. then the minute we left, they'd be hungry! I always discretely slipped a Mickey waffle, pastry, or fruit in a ziplock bag.

I remember a lovely waitress at Cape May Cafe filled a to-go cup with cherrios for my toddler to take with him.

I think for children, it's no big deal. It's what parents do.

This.^^^
I never thought to carry ziplocks before a breakfast at CP. The now 17-year-old seriously did not eat a bit as a little girl. She was so freaking excited. (Like out of her mind at Park Fare with Cinderella...) So I asked if I could swipe a banana. The server was ready to help get whatever for her...alas, it was a billion degrees out, so I passed. Clearly, they see this all the time and it is not tacky.

We do this all the time at BOG! They bring a huge plate of pastries with breakfast and we bring a ziplock and bring the extras with us for snacks!
I do the same at BOG. If it's already on your plate somewhere else, and they're going to toss it anyway, I don't see anything wrong with it. Just don't ask for extras to pack!

I agree ziplocs are key for disposing of nasty stuff in a non-obtrusive way but I can't say I've ever carried one full of cooked food of any sort in my bag.

I totally agree with you! I was just explaining reasons why someone would carry ziplocks around because I do. I’m totally against taking buffet leftovers, all you care to eat is more of a gray area (don’t order another platter just to take leftovers.) I wouldn’t bag anything up in either case personally.

If one of my kids doesn’t eat the warm waffle at breakfast they’re not going to eat a soggy cold one later. Ick. My kids can be poky eaters, but they get their chance to eat when we are at the table. When they stop showing interest the meal is over. We have healthy snacks for later if the kids don’t eat at a meal. We never bag anything at Disney meals.

Once at O'Hana, we ended up with two platters of food. Our family of 5 couldn't finish one of the platters let alone two! I took 2 mickey waffles and started to wrap them up in a napkin for our long drive home and the waitress came over to me and scolded me for attempting to take the waffles. She said that people try to do it all of the time but they don't realize that if that food goes bad and we get sick from it that Disney would be liable and could be sued. She had me put the waffles back on the platter and took them to the trash. Mortifying experience. :scared:
Although I never attempted to take leftovers from a family style meal again, I really don't see anything wrong with it.

As your waitress stated, in part because the food does spoil and people can become sick. And then try to blame Disney for "bad" food.

I honestly can’t imagine bagging up most restaurant food and then carrying it around the parks all day. That stuff needs to be refrigerated quickly or it goes bad. No way would I pull out an hours-old waffle and feed it to my kid. I usually have some kind of dry cereal on me (like Cheerios) in the parks for him to have if he gets hungry.

I don’t think it’s “wrong” to take leftovers from the first platter of an AYCTE meal if you don’t finish it. I just wouldn’t want to take it with me for reasons mentioned above. This is one of those “I’ll do me, you do you” scenarios.

Couldn't agree more with this. In our case, we were leaving O'Hana to travel home. We had a cooler in the car with snacks and drinks for our kids (16, 14 and 9 at the time). I would not have given my kids anything that was not properly stored and would make them sick.

Then why do any of the Disney restaurants offer take-home boxes/bags? At some point, the consumer needs to take responsibility for the food that they take with them.

It’s possible that the customer is returning to their room immediately after the meal or that the customer is a local and returning home. Food is ok if it’s left out for a little bit...just not an entire morning of touring.

I do agree that customers need to take responsibility for themselves, but reality is that many people do not.

IMHO I say it isn't a big deal. DD has food allergies and at Boma last year for breakfast she was given a huge dessert platter with 6 allergy friendly donuts and muffins. She was only 5 years old and there was no way she could finish all of that! We asked if we could have a box because I thought it would be such a waste to throw it all away. I would never take that much from a buffet (or allow one of my kids to do so) but if it comes as a first helping from the kitchen I think it is perfectly acceptable to take it with you.

Typically aycte meals are for dining while there

Heck my mom always swiped an extra cookie or two from cp  when she was still able to go.

Have a great time!

My elderly Father (may he rest in peace) use to leave all the Disney buffets with a pocket full of cookies and would try to stuff some in my mother's purse. I was sooooo mortified. Now I'd give anything to go back to Cape May Cafe with him and his pocket full of buffet cookies. (sorry for the thread drift)

No problem with the waffle. Pack it up.

If a waitress ever scolded me like that, my meals would have been comped & she would be packing food to go for us. Totally inappropriate and not her place.

You are right! Thinking back on it, I should have said something. She was an older woman and it seemed like she was newer to serving. She took our order and then failed to come back to our table for a long period of time. A server from a nearby table must have noticed what was going on came by and brought us a platter of food. Just as he gave us a platter of food, our originally ordered platter came out too, leaving us with 2 platters. We couldn't eat even one platter and it seemed like such a waste. Our waitress was not happy and it kind of set a tense tone for the rest of the meal. We never complained about what was going on, but thinking back, I should have.

Our server at Garden Grill last year asked if we wanted to take some fruit with us when we left. I told her I would if I had a container to put it in. She told me to bring one next time. Will I? Probably not, but that is because I don't want to lug it through the park. If I had small children, I definitely would. Not at a buffet, but at AYCTE. They bring way too much food at some places and it is so wasteful. I see no problem with taking what is initially brought to you. It is yours, you have paid for it.
