Super Speeder Law Goes Into Effect in GA on 1/1/10

Maybe it will fund the same construction that has been at a standstill in southern GA on I75 since 2004. That is nothing more than a 50 mph speedtrap.

Thanks for the tip, I'll keep the speed at 84 now.

Good to know. My Sister got caught in GA many, many years ago so I am pretty careful about the GA speedtrap. It must work pretty well for them and this will be a nice boost in State revenue.

Does this work like Disney parking? Show them a prior speeding ticket from the same day and they let you go? :car:

Anyone doing 85mph deserves a $200 fine. In MI, anything 15mph over the limit will get you a reckless driving ticket, too, which will have an adverse effect on your car insurance. BTW, unless you are a GA resident, they can't suspend your out of state drivers' license, they can only issue a bench warrant.

Good for Georgia. There is no good reason for anyone to be doing 85+ which is simply endangering everyone else.

Thank you Thank you...I got flamed a few months ago for saying something similar. There is absolutely no need to be going that fast. I don't care if you put your own life at risk, but when YOU start putting MY life at risk, that is when I get mad.

Legally, how can Georgia suspend the licenses of residents of another state? just wondering.

Nevermind, bradisgoofy already answered that one. Looked like a law school test problem to me at first.

Actually Georgia can have your license suspended. Most states belong to the The Interstate Drivers License Compact and or the Nonresident Violator Compact.

If you get a citation in a member state and fail to pay it or do what they require they will report it to your home state and your license can be suspended. They also report your violations to your home state and they can be placed on your driving record.

Georgia is a participating member in the Non Resident compact so they would be able to have your license suspended in your home state.

Also if you are a from a state that is not a member and get stopped out of your state, you could be required to post a bond. In MD that would mean you are arrested and taken before a court commissioner.

Your best bet is to slow down when out of state. FYI Virginia also has very high fines. 20mph over is considered reckless driving there.

The link below goes into the details.

In some states, the freeway speed is 75 so doing 85 is only going 10 over. It's easy to get going 85 in our car, so if we ever go through Georgia we'll make sure to slow down.

That's one nice thing about pulling a camper to Disney, no chance of ever getting a ticket, I can barely do 65 pulling it without hearing huge sucking noises from the gas tank!!!! :-)

Absolutely. I grew up in Louisiana, and troopers there are well-known for gunning for folks with out-of-state plates, especially in areas off the interstates and on the major spillways/causeways on I-10. What they might let a resident get away with is not going to fly if you're not local.

By the way, if you're driving through Louisiana feeling a bit lead-footed and see a state trooper in a dark blue vehicle with several lightning-bolt decals on the fender, abandon hope. Those are the state police "Ace" officers. They get the special cruiser as a reward for diligent enforcement, and the decals show the number of convictions that they have been responsible for in auto theft cases. (They get one decal for every 5 convictions.) Those guys are known for showing absolutely no mercy. If by some miracle they don't see you first, ease off your accelerator or kill your cruise, but don't tap your brakes -- I swear they can detect a brake light three miles away. Also, they are VERY fond of lying in wait behind billboards, closed weigh stations, and stands of trees off the side of the road, so be aware of that possibility.

I watched someone go 15 over the speed limit in a construction zone RIGHT PAST a cop and the cop didn't even budge. I'm sorry, but I don't take a law like that too seriously, at least not around the Atlanta area.

In the Atlanta area, you can probably get away with it but I would never, never, ever expect a Southern GA cop to do the same thing. Those guys are merciless. If you don't want to take it seriously, that's your thing. But the warning is out there.

Personally, I don't know of any Interstates in Georgia that are above 70 MPH. I-285 around Atlanta, I-75 inside of I-285, and I-85 inside of I-285 are all 55 MPH. Once you get outside of I-285, I-75 and I-85 go up to 70 MPH.

The Georgia State Patrol has been using more motorcycles and unmarked cars in recent months. Police are allowed to speed match in Georgia to determine your speed. So, just because you don't see a police car doesn't mean there are several nearby.

Note to self put curise control on 84 in ga lol :rotfl: joking i normally put cruise on like speed limit or 5 over
