Super Goofs kicking some BOOty in October

Hey airtime- looking pretty good out there!

I remember when I had knee issues I would ace wrap a bag of ice to my knee and keep it there for hours. I was able to drive, do house work and even a spin class or two with it on!

I am a big fan of Naprosyn- 2-200 mg tabs twice a day does the trick for me
(insert disclaimer: speak with your PCP before doing this- I am not giving medical advice)

I am off in the morning to go to DC for the MCM:banana:

The weather looks beautiful and I feel pretty good!

I am a finisher- not a racer- must beat my slug time from last year!

forgot to add:
airtime- did you run thru the redwood forest? I so want a race report about that!

Quick check in. I'm kinda having a crazy week.

Girls and I ran the Make A Wish 5K last Saturday. It was very cold, but I think they had fun. It was their first 5K, they had only done smaller fun runs before.

We leave Friday for the TOT 13K. It will be a quick two night trip for DH and I. Still going to try to squeeze in MNSSHP and F&W. Should be a fun, but tiring weekend!

Hope everyone is well!

Shan - That's great that you got to run the girls' first 5K with them. I am looking forward to my soon-to-be 4yo's first race. Have fun at the TOT 13K!

Joanne - Thanks for the knee advice. I've been taking Ibuprofen and lots of ice and it's been working pretty well. How did you finally overcome your knee issues? Have fun at the MCM. Safe travels and be sure to report on it when you get back!

Yes, my run was through the redwoods. It's such a beautiful course. You start out on an unsuspecting overpass and then plunge into darkness. They call this area the Avenue of the Giants as parts have so many tall trees they literally block out the sun. In several parts you feel like you need to take off your sunglasses or you might trip.

I've done this course three times now. They run it in May and October and reverse the course each time. Here is a video showing the course: http://theave.org/Tour%20The%20Course.wmv The part I ran was miles 13-26.

Here are links to the two races here: http://www.theave.org/ and http://www.redwoodsmarathon.org/

I didn't have my camera this time but here are some pictures from last year:

Great pictures Steve!

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend!!

Did 8 miles yesterday so I am ready for Tower of Terror but oh so tired this morning.

I have been MIA for too long...sorry Goofs! LTO and we all know how that goes.

Training is finally back on track and hopefully will stay that way.

Cecelia, Joanne, Steve - congrats on your races!!

Maura & Suzanne -was great to see you again. As for the temps and humidity - UGH!

Good luck to everyone doing MCM or TOT.

I have two upcoming events - Climb the Sears Tower (2,197 steps for charity) and then Space Coast. Looking at a local du next weekend but will decide on that last minute.

Hi all,

So I came back from RFTT, did laundry, and pretty much turned around and left to drive to MA to visit my mother. She was having a severe Buddy withdrawal---she needed to see the dog! So I just got back last night. Didn't have a computer--just as well because I did nothing while I was gone. I am now going to fit my 3 runs for the week in over the next 4 days and hope I know what it feels like to run. Somehow, after I came back fom FL, I lost a little motivation...gotta get it back.

Joanne and Steve Congrats on your races. And hope MCM goes well, Joanne.

Shan have a blast at ToT. I would loved to have done this---that would make 3 Disney races that I have closed! But no can do.

Hope everyone else is hanging in. We had our first snow of the season at my mom's! The cold weather is here!

Maura

HI everyone!

Just checking in to see how the training is going. How many goofs are running at WDW in January? I need training stories - I am in withdrawal!

Cecilia

Wow, the Goofs have been quiet. I hope all the Tower of Terror and Marine Corps racers had a great time. Congrats to those I've missed (Joanne, Steve, and our RftT'ers: Rich, Lisa, Maura and Suzanne) since I haven't posted in a while.

Cecilia, you asked for it, so here's my latest training story. I'm training to do the 2010 WDW full, which will be my first time to "go all the way." Considering I've injured myself during both the WDW Half and the DL Half, I've been pretty scared about doubling the distance. Last Saturday I had to cut my 11-mile long run down to 9 because my IT band (originally injured at the WDW Half) refused to allow me to descend the steps that are part of my team's long run route. I spent the rest of the week concentrating on my "short" runs (since when is 6 miles "short"?) and tried to keep stretching, all the while racked with self-doubt about actually finishing the marathon. The training and stretching really paid off, however: this Saturday, I was able to do my full 13 without incident. Actually, I felt so good, I kept going until the Garmin said 13.2 -- that made it officially my Longest Run Ever. What an emotional roller coaster this week has been!

Hi all,

Kim Congrats on your 13 and for yout IT band behaving. I know what that's like-both mentally and pyhsically.

Liz Did you "do the du"? And I would love to hear about the stair climb. I almost did one here in DTW last March, but ran away to FL for a 5k (and cheered the Princess 1/2) that weekend.

Well, I did my "3 in 4 days" and seemed to have survived. My 12 mile run today was okay, but the last few long runs my legs have been feeling heavy. No pains/strains, just achy. Today I een took two gels, since I figure I better make sure I keep the engine fueled! I also tend not to drink too much when I run because I don't like feeling full. One thing I love about running outside (yes, it's gross) is that I can spit! It's nice to be able to rinse out my mouth to make the dry go away and then ditch the water/

Anyway, need to get back into the whole rhythm this week--my XT has been non-existent. Next LR will be Sunday--13 miles, and I am reaching the point where I think I could use some company. Entertaining the thought of driving to Ohio for a 1/2 marathon.

Hope everyone else is doing well. Shan....how was TOT?

Maura

Suzanne- those medals look wonderful! You are so lucky to be able to do them all. The entry fees must kill you but disney races are so much fun!

Has anyone heard from our fearless leader?

Thanks Joanne. I am lucky enough to live about 20 minutes away from Magic Kingdom so I don't have to buy airfare, hotel, etc when doing the Disney races. The fall races were alot of fun and I am sad to see them go.

I haven't heard from Lisa since Race for the Taste but I do remember her posting either here or on facebook that her office is moving closer to home so she must be really busy with that!!

Hi everyone!!

I have been MIA for so many reasons I cannot list them all. Just suffice it to say I have been super mega busy and I hope it is done soon! The office has not moved; however they have found space for us so before Christmas is our new target...:sad2:

DD14 is part of the Eastern Maine field hockey championship team this year. It is their 9th year running with the title. States are Saturday.

DS8 has been a soccer maniac playing every chance he can get and really doing well with it.

I have not been running, exercising or doing much besides driving to work and back lately. Not many miles on the sheet from me at all and maybe not many in the near future either. Things should calm down soon for me though with winter coming quicker than I had planned on.

Congratulations to all the race finishers lately. Sorry I haven't been much support. I will try and check in once a week from now on at the very least. If anyone wants to start the November thread, feel free. I will be down in the southern part of the state that day and not working on Sunday so no one will hear from me until Monday again.

Take care Goofs and keep up the hard work everyone. I feel like I have let you all down this year. If this game continues, I hope that someone else will step up to captain the ship because I feel like I am going down......

Cecilia - you don't want any of my training stories. I just haven't felt any speed in my legs since coming back from WDW - everything is heavy and slow. I suspect it is because I am ramping up my mileage, plus adding long runs back in, so my body is having to readjust. Next marathon is Zoom Yah Yah on Jan 10, and I really need to start running with a 35 pound pack to prepare for Bataan Memorial in March.

Good job, Suzanne. I'd love to live to close to WDW, except for that whole "heat and humidity" thing.

Keep running, everyone!

I have had my training sabotaged! My running partner has had sick kids and other issues and we haven't had a chance to run all week. What I should be doing is getting out there and training without her to gain some ground on her. What I am doing is sitting around thinking up excuses. Somebody come down here and kick me!

Kim! -I am with you on a 6 mile "short" run! Sometimes when my schedule calls for 3, I have to convince myself its worth bending over to put on my running shoes. Congrats on the 13.2! See?! I KNOW you can do it!

Maura - I use jelly bellies not gels because I can take one at a time. The gels are harder to dole out in small amounts. I suck on the jellies so I don't need water with them.

As for heavy legs, that comes with increased training. Be sure you are eating right and drinking lots of water when you aren't running. Sometimes an extra water the day before a run can really help.

Joanne - You amaze me! What a great attitude you have. I keep saying that I am going to run my next race as a pleasant pace and just enjoy myself but other than my first Goofy, I always end up pushing to hard. I am so glad you had a good race! I will be there next year.

Steve - You can not do speed and distance at the same time. Get your distances up THEN worry about speed. And remember to fuel your body well all the time, not just on running days. Sometimes, ok most of the time, I think speed is over rated. Then, Just about the time I can live with my pace, I have one of those super fast runs and forget all about how much I hate pushing myself.

Lisa - You are doing fine. We all have those periods in our lives when getting exercise in is just about impossible. You have made some major lifestyle changes this year and you have super busy super kids and it all adds up. I am so impressed that you have managed to stick with it this far! You have not let us down.

Suzanne - thats some nice bling! Congratulations!

Alright, I am going to stop procrastinating and brave the wind for a run!

Cecilia

Quick fly by...

Congrats to all those who have completed races and stayed with the training. Hugs and PD to those who need it as well.

Maura - did not do the du as the weather was crap which sadly seems to be the norm around here lately. Either cold or wet...or both. Ugh.

The Sears Tower climb is on Nov 15 -- 110 stories, 2,197 steps. Right now I figure I can get to about floor 100 before passing out. Certainly not going for speed! I'll be sure to let everyone know how it goes.

Tomorrow will be long run and hoping to get in long bike on Sunday but if it's like last weekend that won't happen again. Winter coming way too early.
