Super Goofs June Team Challenge Thread

Add on one hour of fitness yoga for yesterday.
Today's goals are to ride for 2 hours and the run for 3.

Today is GG#3 last day of school. Fitting in the riding (therapy) is going to be tough!

Disneyluv- I love the wii fit too! We are all having a blast with it!

H Goofs,

150 minutes of lawnmowing and yard work this evening.

Sorry, I forgot to put my pedometer on so I do not really have "numbers".

Real life seems to be getting in the way lately, however, I will be persistent.

Take care!

still battling a pulled muscle in my back...

suzanne, have you been playing w/your garmin?

Angie, try the rolled towel along your spine release that I gave Cecilia. Just take a bath towel and roll it up, lay it on the floor and lay on top of it with the towel on one side of your spine. Switch it to the other side once you are stretched. Sometimes this will break the spasm in the muscles that run along your back. That and a tennis ball sometimes help a lot.

I got in a 3.1 mile run on the TM at the gym yesterday in 30:51 which just reinforces my belief that I could do the 5K this weekend under 30 minutes. I did get in touch with the RD and he is going to hold my shirt at the LOCO store for me to pick up. If any of my NH people go there, if you could just grab it, I would pay for the shipping to mail it to me.

I also got in a 6 mile bike with DS6 to the ice cream shop and back. He was such a trooper and never walked until we got to the hill in my driveway. That was a long bike for a 6 year old!!!

Joanne, AmyBeth is a go for the Applefest, now I am working on DKP (Debra) as she has it under consideration also. I will think about the Maine half but it is in the middle of my training for the Applefest and I am unsure about how DH will feel about another trip south. I have Beach to Beacon 10K Aug 2, then the Maine half would be September and then the Applefest 10/4 then off to ToT on the 24th of October so you see my dilemma.....:(

Great job getting the workouts in Super Goofs. Good to see you back Disneyluv and Uptown-girl44. Susie and Steve, you are racking up some serious miles with you bikes!!!!!

I did my W8D1 run outside last night thanks to the humidity finally being below 50% (temps were still in the 80s though). It was my first time running 28 minutes without stopping! Sadly, my right ankle hasn't been too happy with me since Saturday's race, so I took it very easy.

2.75 miles in 40.5 minutes.

The outside of my ankle/lower leg is still not very happy this morning. Luckily I have a good ankle brace from when my left ankle was whining at the start of my Couch to 5K journey, so I am nicely strapped and wrapped.

I will probably have to cool it for a while to let myself heal. Will the elliptical be OK to use while I'm laying off the running? I hate that I made it this far and have to lay off with just another week and a half to go, but I know it's the smart thing to do.

Kim (I think that's right??) did you have an ankle injury that you got the brace from? Just curious. I never advise wrapping unless you have been advised by a doc. Bracing just leads to more weakness a lot of times.

If the pounding motion of the running is bothering your ankle, yes, take a break and try the elliptical. There is less pounding with the elliptical motion. I found this very beneficial during my PF phase (and yes it was a phase and no it is NEVER welcome back again!!). I would also suggest ankle stretching/strengthening to keep your ankles and feet happy and healthy. I wake up every morning and do flexion and extension then circles both ways. Some people do the alphabet. That is way too much for me in the morning!! :lmao:

If you have to take a rest, it will be in your best interest later. I know you hate to see all the progress made go backward but you don't lose that much that quickly and it comes back faster than before. Trust in the force!! ::yes:: I have been in your shoes (well not literally or they would smell worse). Another thing to do is check your gait and make sure you are in good form. If you are a pronator or supinator, there are shoes designed to correct that problem.

Best of luck!!

Thanks, Lisa. You are very knowledgeable! And yes, my name is Kim -- I keep forgetting to sign my posts.

Here's a brief medical history: I had sprained my left ankle 3 or 4 years ago while trying not to fall down the stairs. It flared up again at the start of C25K training but ironically not due to anything I did while running. I had taken my daughter to the pool on my rest day, and I must have twisted it in the water somehow. Odd. Over the next few days, I took my son to WDW and walked all over the place, which made it much worse. My husband is a podiatrist, and he gave me a neoprene ankle brace to support it while it healed.

While I rested, my husband did the computerized analysis and ordered some custom orthotics for me. I'm the world's biggest pronator, and my running form is absolutely horrendous, but the orthotics help. The orthotic company also sent me a pair of Brooks Adrenalines to go with them, but they were a size too small -- and were very similar to my current running shoes -- so I'm going to stay with what I have until it's time to replace them.

So long story short, I'm just re-using the ankle brace from my prior injury to the opposite ankle. I'm not strapping it yet -- that was just a turn of phrase. I'm not using the brace all the time, just while I'm so sore that I would be limping without it. I'd been stretching before each and every run, but I will be sure and start to do so in the morning as well. Thanks for the tip!

Holy smokes- tell yourself- these are training miles. I have totally over extended myself but when opportunity knocks- I am going to answer the door! It's an art not a science! I have MCM lined up not too soon after Hollis half and a couple of other things I probably should not do but what the heck.... everything paid for so we are going! I should have planned it better but I am over 40 so how much longer do I have ?

We are going to have THE BEST BBQ at my house after the Hollis half. PLEASE CHAD COME WITH WIFE AND CHILD- even if you don't run! You can give me hints to your puzzle cache (which I don't do because I am too "stupid") Every one is welcome! PM me and I will give the address and what to bring!

Thursday, June 19:

Susie: 13 miles, 1 hour
Steve: 14 miles, 1 hour, 5 minutes

I just got a new road bike today. It's all carbon and I should be able to ride faster on it than the previous bike I was using. So far, I'm going a lot SLOWER. Hmmmmm. I'm also sore from riding a lot this week. I'll probably take tomorrow off from the bike and go to the gym instead.

suzanne, have you been playing w/your garmin?

I have and so far I :lovestruc it! I used it for the first time on Tuesday and my walking buddies were very impressed. Can't wait to wear it for Race for the Taste!

Angie...where in NH are you? I have some questions!

Good sad morning Super Goofs. I know last chance workout and all. I totally missed my workout yesterday and I am in mourning. I have had a hard time with motivation knowing that I was not going to hit that PR at the 5K this weekend. This too shall pass....sigh....

The IT guy from the hospital was here through my workout time. My shift officially ends at 12:30 and he was here until 3 p.m. I had to get dinner for kidlets and off to practices and games so I never got a chance to workout. My miles are way down this week and I am :( :furious: Good thing we have Susie and Steve with their high miles to make us look good!! Everyone else is doing great too. Keep up the good work everyone. Today is the last day of the week so get those miles in....please.....

I have 3 planned for today but I may opt for a bike ride to make up some of my miles instead. I don't have tons of time today either. I have to go buy a birthday gift for a 7yo birthday party that got sprung on us last night and then we have a gymnastics show to attend. I am in hopes that this is winding down in her life as she mentioned basketball this week. That would put another $120 a month in my pocket. More races????

Joanne, I agree if I pay for the race, I will do my darndest to be there. Unfortunately, like this weekend, I sometimes do not make it and that makes me angry that I paid money and cannot race. On top of the PR thing (and the chili and wings) that I will miss, it has done a number on my motivation. I cannot afford that again. I do have 8-14 scheduled for the weekend of the women's half and I will keep it under consideration for something to do. I cannot, however, promise anything. DS and DH have a birthday right near there too. Most of these races are, unfortunately, a 2 hour plus drive for me being situated where I am in Maine. I would like to do all of them. So, what do you need for the BBQ. That is something I AM excited about!! :yay: :woohoo: :yay:

Kim, I don't know about knowledgeable but I have had lots of ankle injuries in my lifetime (volleyball is an ankle killer, thumbs too) and I am just suggesting the things I have had to do in order to keep on keeping on. I would defer to your DH though being that he is a trained professional!!! :thumbsup2 You are lucky to have someone like that. ::yes:: I tried to run with orthotics and they hurt my PF more. I did find them helpful post-run though. I am a HUGE stretching advocate, just ask anyone here, or anywhere else on the boards. You should stretch pre and post run and maybe try the circles or alphabet either in the morning or at night for strengthening purposes. Best of luck!!

So I have 2 weeks to get my head back in the game before I start training for the Beach to Beacon 10K. Who wants to give me a swift kick??? :rolleyes1

Lisa There is no "Kick" emoticon, so we'll just do it with words! No, not really. I don't see any reason to kick, just support. I empathize with the motivation thing--you are not alone. Sending good vibes your way!

Today I did 35 minutes in the pool and as usual, lost track of the distance! Given my usual "torrid" pace, let's just say .7 miles. Wednesday I cycled and did 9.1 miles in 40 minutes (I think).

Off today to buy new shoes and maybe some cushioning insoles. ANybody have any suggestions on insoles?

Maura

Maura, thanks for the non-kick. I don't have any suggestions on insoles but the Asics Nimbus shoes that I just got are very cushiony. I have had my left knee scoped in the past and part of the meniscus removed. Again, volleyball is a killer just in case anyone missed that. I have to have cushioned shoes for that reason and man can I tell when the foot bed breaks down!!! I am also a big fan of the Saucony shoes, any kind. I am currently in a Guide but I have also had a Ride before and they have great cushion.

Best of luck in the shoe search. I know I drive the poor clerks crazy at the local Olympia store when it is time. I think they roll their eyes just at the sight of me. I rotate 2 pairs so I try to hit at the buy one get the second half off sale. :thumbsup2 Let us know what you come out with, I, for one, always love to hear what works for others so I can try it myself!!!! ::yes::

Good Morning SuperGoofs,

Got in another 1 hour of bootcamp this morning. (maybe by the end of the summer I won't feel like hurling after :rotfl2: ). Also added 1 1/2 hours of Wii Fit. I'm hoping to get out walking for bike riding this weekend.
