Super Goofs are all HEART in February

Good Morning Goofs. Thanks for the nice welcome.

Rich: I'd vote for starting Feb 1 since I'd have to guess about January's miles. I like counting races as double the miles. It would be hard to convert gardening to miles, but you could use an effort scale. Was the gardening equivalent to walking, jogging or sprinting? I could walk 3 miles in an hour, jog 6 miles or sprint 9(?). So depending on how hard I felt I was working I could pick an approximate mileage.

Suzanne: 68 and sunny? Can I visit? and stay for the next 3 months?

Joanne: Yes, I BQ'd at Baystate this past year. I made full use of the extra 10 minutes you get when you turn 45. My time was 3:59:12. Great job with the boot camp. I really want to join one, but just don't have the time in my schedule right now.

Todd: Welcome. Sorry things didn't work out for the Donald this year. It's good that you've signed up for Wine and Dine. Just a bit of incentive to get your training in.

I got my tempo run in yesterday on the TM. We got just enough snow to make things slippery on the roads. 1 mile warm up, 3 miles at 10K pace and 1 mile cool down. I really wanted to cut it short, my legs were tired, I was pressed for time, but I decided I just had to tough it out. I'm so glad I did. I just really needed a mental victory. I've been giving myself way too much slack over the past 2 months after working so hard during the fall. It's time for me to get back to diligent training for a while.

Have a great day everyone.
Cindy

In no particular order...

Todd Welcome! I did Muddy Buddy at Stoney Creek this past July. It was a hoot. A friend of mine called me the day before and asked if I'd be interested to do with her daughter. So we made up one of the most skewed "66-75" teams, and I hadn't trained for it, but we actually came in third in our age group. Doing any short local races?

Rich February, double, 4mph (seems like it would be easy to do quarter hour intervals)

Joanne Have never done a boot camp class. I almost think I could get through a marathon easier! (Almost)

Cindy Seems like a post-holiday/New Year slump/hiatus is the norm for a lot of people. Glad your run went well and here's hoping for further good runs.

Angie Good luck with your race on Sunday. There is a local 5k here that I was thinking about doing, and hoping to get in for free since I had volunteered for a race they also put on. Haven;'t heard anything from them about it though. I suppose I better try to call!

I am happy to report that my first real run (not counting the dreadful 1.5 miler I did a couple of weeks ago) post-marathon went well. I had planned to just run 3 miles-no pressure, but I felt good and did 4. I felt 95+% and will run again today (as soon as I get my act together). Going to take another week to build up some mileage and then start on a training plan for something--probably a 10k, although there are long enough training runs that I may look for a half.

Maura

I am

I'm 465 miles (as the crow flies) to Epcot. This will be a fun challenge.

My office is doing a "walk to Atlanta" challenge where teams of 8 have the month of February to rack up 147.03 miles as a group. Looking at my training schedule, I'm due to go 101 this month, so I think my team should hit that target even if I miss a run or two!

Welcome to Cindy and Todd! I look forward to getting to know you.

I'm going to volunteer at the Mercedes Marathon on 2/14. My original plan was to work a water stop, but Team in Training may need me to help pace the runners as a TNT sweeper instead. I'm hoping to sweep the half rather than the full, but since my recovery went so much better than I'd expected/dreaded, I'm curious to see if I could handle another 26.2 this month. I'll keep you posted.

Greetings Goofs!
I'll admit to being a complete bum since returning from marathon weekend. Time to get back to it. I have my triathlon sched figured out for the summer and I'll be back for Donald next year. I just booked our Bay Lake Tower villa this morning!

Running to Disney is a great idea! I bet someone smarter than me can even figure out a ticker-thingy for it once we have a total. I vote for counting other forms of self-powered miles in the total, otherwise I may not be much help. I really hate running, so I only do it 2x-ish a week until about 12 weeks before the half. I do tris, so lots of biking and swimming, and I cover some good miles cross training on my rollerblades.

I am 862 miles from my "home" at Bay Lake Tower. You should all be thankful that I am not currently living in my Alaska home. That one is 4787 miles from WDW (only 4404 miles from Tokyo Disney!) DH is military, so we have "family home" (Cleveland, where we grew up and our folks still live), "house home" (the house we own in Alaska and will return to someday), and "stuff home" (where our rumps currently rest in Alexandria, VA). There is never a short answer in my life!

Currently I am training for the Boston Marathon in April which I qualified for last October.

:worship: BQ - awesome! So...you run a full in about the time it takes me to run the half. ;)

Hi, my name is Todd. I'll be thirty this year. I am a newbie to running/racing. I am also new to the WISH part of the DIS.
I planned on doing the Donald last month, but things fell through. I ended up being a spectator/cheer guy on the side lines. Last year, I participated in the Muddy Buddy event in Orlando and plan on doing it again this May as well. I have already registered for the Wine and Dine Dash in October. It will be my first official race. I am kind of nervous, but mostly excited. I am also planning on registering this month for the Mickey 2011.
I look forward to getting to know you.

Oh, and I am 1197 miles from my happy place.

Welcome Todd!

Good morning Goofs!

I am 1125 miles away from my happy place. (Technically, it's a smidge less, something like 1124.8949573761263 or something, but really, that extra little bit is probably a rounding error or something.)

I call the .8949573761263! You guys can all divide out the rest. :)

Angie, no snow here either except for marathon weekend

After running my first half in the freezing rain, I am almost to the point where I can laugh about it. Almost.

M.

Good evening Goofs! Just checking in. I am 1107 miles from the Happiest Place on Earth.

I am currently repeating week one of C25K. The whole family has been sick and I am just getting over a pretty good cough that is making my asthma act up. That makes running a bit difficult as I start to cough and cant stop...good thing I am not scheduled to run in my first 5K until May...Mother's Day in fact. Lots of time to get ready.

A question for you all: do any of you have any experience with Jogging Strollers? I would like to get one for my birthday coming up and have started checking them out. Have any of you used them? If so, what kind would you recomend? TIA!

Good morning Goofs!

I will get everyone's miles from WDW added up this weekend. Thanks to Rich's questions and those that have answered so far, I think we should start counting miles from February 1st, races count as double miles and gardening, mowing the grass, etc should count as 1 mile per 15 mins unless you are just sitting there pulling weeds, then maybe 1 mile per 30 mins. Use your best judgement!!

Anyone else see the Mickey Halloween 5K in October is $99!! WOW!! I understand it include a ticket to Mickey's Not So Scary party on Sunday night but as most have said on another thread, they planned to check out on Sunday morning to get home for work on Monday. A way to make you spend another night? A way to fill a party that normally does not sell out since its early in October? Interesting...

Have a great weekend everyone!!

Kim Wow....that would be a big thing to get out there and run another marathon so soon. Hope you get the half.

M How do you manage to manage all those homes! And what triathlons are you doing this year? I have no real plans for one--except I did just buy a wetsuit, just in case! (It was a good deal and Never say Never!) As for the miles challenge--we always count biking, swimming, etc--anything where you can do miles or minutes.

Ashleigh I have no current knowledge of baby joggers. When my kids were young, we had a Baby Jogger. But back then it was my husband doing the running--I only ever used it for "off-road" stroller needs. Consumersearch.com has info on them--they are one of these sites that doesn't do their ow reviews, but collects others. I find the site useful. Here's a link....

Suzanne Ouch! You'd think there has to be a limit to what Disney would charge, but I doubt there is. As long as they have enough people willing to pay the prices, it will happen. Oh well, I'll just pick my Disney races carefully.

As for me....another 4 miler yesterday that went fine, although my right quad is still not totally fine. Oh well. I am still trying to get free entry into a 5k this Sunday. Hey, it comes with a pint glass instead of a T-shirt, which I say "Hooray" to. My DH uses the one I got at Race for the Taste every day.

Hope everyone has a great weekend. And M stay safe and warm this weekend with all the snow headed your way.

We have a Baby Trend Expedition. Make sure you get a jogger that has a front wheel that is either fixed or locks. Mine has a locking front wheel which means it swivels like a normal stroller when unlocked and can lock in the fixed position when I run. Trying to run with it swiveling gets ugly fast. I didn't like the fixed wheel strollers I tried as they are difficult to steer when you are just walking and we take ours everywhere and not just jogging.

Other than that, I would just look for one with a cup holder and snack tray for the kiddos as they might be stuck in there for a while and need a place for snacks and entertainment. Mine also has cup holders and a tray for me as well.

HTH!

I was planning on leaving on Monday and would have liked to attend a MNSSHP anyway. Two birds with one stone for me. Probably still over priced.

Maura, I'm off the hook for running at Mercedes, so I'll "just" be doing the water stop. I know I'll be jealous of all the runners, but I want to pay it forward since the water stop volunteers at Disney were simply amazing! Hopefully it won't be quite as :cold: for us.

Hooray for your BLT villa for marathon weekend, M! I'm a Hilton Head DVC'er myself, and when I called to book our 2010 marathon weekend ressie at exactly 7 months out, I was shut out of our first four resort choices. If I sign up for Goofy 2011, and it's looking more and more like I will, I think I'll just pay OOP for our room instead of trying to use points. The half will be on DH's 40th birthday, so I figured the Poly or another monorail resort might be a nice treat.

Suzanne, I just about choked when I saw that $99 charge for the 5K. I figured it must have been a typo, but I guess not. I'm considering doing the Wine & Dine half, so maybe I'll see you there, Todd.

Maura & Steve...thanks for the info! Decisions, decisions...

Well, we are very snowed in, so I have plenty of time to post today. :)
We're in the middle of the DC-area "Blizzard of the Century" - about 18 inches so far. My dog, an Alaskan Husky, is in heaven! The bummer is that DS11's hockey game was canceled. His team is currently #2 in their league and were scheduled to play the current #1. They've been working towards this game for weeks, so it is a bummer.

Luckily, Santa (ok, DH) bought me a bike trainer for Christmas, so I can turn my road bike in to a stationary bike. I'll be riding in my living room today.

M How do you manage to manage all those homes! And what triathlons are you doing this year? I have no real plans for one--except I did just buy a wetsuit, just in case! (It was a good deal and Never say Never!)

Maura - It is good to be prepared!

We only actually own one of those homes. We kept Alaska and are renting it out. We rent our house in VA, and Cleveland is just called 'home' because the rest of our family is there - parents, brothers, their families, etc. Our folks still live in the houses we grew up in, so it is still home.

I plan to run SheROX Philly in August (.8K, 25K, 5K) and The Nations Tri in DC (my first international distance 1.5K, 40K, 10K) in September.

I would like to do the 1/10 Ironman that I ran last year, just because it makes me laugh. They haven't announced a date for it yet, but if it is the same weekend in July as last year, it will be the weekend of my {gasp} 20 year high school reunion, so I'll skip it.

Hooray for your BLT villa for marathon weekend, M! I'm a Hilton Head DVC'er myself, and when I called to book our 2010 marathon weekend ressie at exactly 7 months out, I was shut out of our first four resort choices. Marathon weekend is the primary reason why we bought BLT. We stayed at POR for marathon weekend once, and I swore that I would never stay off the monorail again. (I consider SOG on the monorail since we just walk down the driveway to Poly). We had rooms reserved at Poly for this past marathon - then we bought DVC when were down there for EEC in September. We were able to get a studio for the weekend only 3 months out - so keep trying. It was a bit tight for the 4 of us for 6 days (especially with all the clothes we had to bring!) but we had a great time. We have a 2 bedroom next year since my BIL's family will be joining us. He's going to run his first marathon and it will be my nephews (5 & 2) first trip to Disney!

so, they are predicting a high of 21 tomorrow for my race, Suzanne, I decided I DO want to come visit you instead!!! Ah well, it's only 4 miles!

Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

Heya Goofs,
Got in a slow 8 mile run this afternoon. I was originally planning on 10, but decided early in the run that 8 would probably be the wiser course. That gives me 2 8-mile runs for the week, and any run tomorrow will keep my mileage at about the same level it was last week. (Since my last three weeks have been something like 19, 27 and 35, a week to level off a bit is probably a good idea.)

Happy Super Bowl Sunday everyone! Is anyone doing anything fun today?

Angie - I hope your 21 degree race went well. You should have brought your ice skates!

Todd - Welcome to the Goofs! Is the 5K the same weekend as the Wine & Dine Half? I'm kicking myself for planning our trip so that we come home a week before the half. If it wasn't a reunion to visit good friends, I would change my plans in a heartbeat.

AFM, I ran the Trinidad to Clam Beach Run yesterday. It's a fun small local race that surprisingly draws people from all over. There are 8.75, 5.75 and 3-mile courses. I ran the 8.75-mile which starts three miles north of town on a beautiful scenic frontage road that overlooks the rocky Pacific coast. We run south to town which is where the 3-mile race ends and the 5.75-mile race begins.

After town, we run through some windy residential neighborhoods overlooking the coast and eventually find ourselves on the beach where we cross a small river that is about waist deep. Coast Guard is there for assistance and sets up a rope for us to hold on to. After that is about 2.5 miles of beach running to the finish line.

This is a really fun but challenging course. It is very hilly and running that far on the beach is really tough for me. Last year, it was cool and sunny which was perfect for racing. This year it rained the entire time so I didn't bother to bring my camera but I still had a great time.

I finished a little more than 3 minutes ahead of last year's time and cut 22 seconds off my pace from last year so I was really happy with that.

-steve

Steve- that sounds really fun!

AFM- I did an hour yoga fitness class f/b a 1 hour hip hop spin class that was really fun.

For fun I treated myself to dirty martinis- yum!

Angie and Steve, congrats on your races!!

I didn't get a chance to start adding up miles this weekend but will hopefully get to it on my days off. The weekend went by way too fast and now we have family in town. Any miles for February to report yet?

Stay warm all you Northerners!!

Steve Congrats on your race. It's always nice to knock time off your PR.

Suzanne I think I'll just report a monthly total for miles, if you don't mind.

I did my first outdoor run since the marathon and felt awful! I think I went out too fast and then just felt winded the entire way. Cut it short and did about 4.5, I think. Oh well. As for fun--made some TinRoof Ice cream (the Monday Mixer thread inspired me!) and watched the game. Was happy withthe outcome. Good, mistake-free game (except for the one big one). Glad for the Saints.

Maura
