Last week we went to the local animal shelter to make a donation. While we were there, we walked around to look at the dogs, and I found a girl I really liked. Since we didn't plan on adopting that day, we went home to think about it. Well, we watched the site for almost a week and last night when we were looking through the pictures we found her still available. We ( DH and I ) drove to the shelter again today, took her out and spent some time with her. She's a young English setter mix, very thin, poorly socialized, with some healing sores on her body. The shelter employee told me she'd probably only been kept for breeding as it was obvious she'd had a few litters of puppies.

Anyway, we decided we really wanted her. But, we are both working the entire weekend ( me 12 hour shifts in the ER Fri, Sat, and Sun ) Dh is working on the water this weekend ( it will be very busy with labor day weekend and he's in law enforcement ) I asked the shelter employee if she'd be "safe" for the weekend ( I knew I couldn't hold her, but I wanted to make sure she wouldn't get put to sleep ) They assured me she'd be fine, and agreed that we shouldn't take her home today if we'd be gone all weekend.

We left knowing that she wasn't held, but hey, she's been in the shelter for over a week. A girl can hope.

Well you guessed it, this evening I checked the website and her picture was down, I checked their facebook page and she was adopted this afternoon. Now, I'm GLAD she's gotten a home, I'm just sad that she's not coming home here. Really disappointed.

I really hope whoever adopted her gives her a good life and treats her much better than she's known so far.

I was already planning collar shopping on my way home from work this weekend and she even had a name. Scout.

I'm so sad.

Aww, that's a shame, so disappointing. Hopefully she'll have a good home wherever she went. You can always look forward to finding another little guy who's just right for you.:goodvibes

Is it possible they took the picture down and changed her status knowing you were coming back. Even though they don't hold them, maybe they did this time.
Might be worth calling to check.

Nope, it's posted on their facebook page that she was adopted today.

I'd still call just in case and also let them know that if for some reason it doesn't work out for those people to call you.

Does you shelter even do same day adoptions? That's a little unusual.

We almost had the same thing happen to us with our cat Abby.

We saw her picture on Petfinder and called the shelter first thing in the morning. By the time Lisa got down there another family had put a 24 hour hold on her. We were SOOOO disappointed. The people at the shelter had us leave our number just in case. The next morning as we were scouring Petfinder for another kitty we got a call saying that the other family decided NOT to take her after all. We rushed down and now she is our beautiful Abby.

Don't give up hope!

Yep, the do same day adoptions. The reason I was in last week was to make a donation for the one year anniversary of my adopted, Saylor. I brought her home a year ago on Aug 23rd and went back a year later with a check, 150 pounds of dog food, 50 pounds of cat food, dog treats and candy for the staff. When I adopted her last year I saw her and brought her home the same day, if I hadn't had the scheduling issues, I could have brought my new dog home today too.

I know I should be happy for her. I just really hope her new owners are experienced because she's going to be a little project. Poor little baby. I will call the shelter though and ask them to contact me if she's returned. Luckily I'm on their facebook page also so I can see who's available on a pretty regular basis.

Oh, that is disappointing! I'm sorry!
I'd call the shelter, though, and let them know that if for some reason the dog comes back in (it's not uncommon for people to have a change of heart in the first day or two!) you want them to let you know. I know someone whose story was just about the same as yours, only with a cat. The family who took the cat brought her back a few days later because she wasn't getting along with their other cat, and my friend got to adopt her.

You never know!

I hope that just the right dog will find you soon. :flower3:

eta I see that while I was posting you said you'll let them know you want a call if the dog comes back in--good plan! :)

Oh gosh my heart was in my throat, I thought she was put down. I'd have cried! I'm sorry she didn't end up in your home, but I'm very glad she ended up in a home, period :)

I'd be disappointed too, I hope you find the doggie love of your lives soon! :)

Ya know what, that means there is a extra special pup waiting for you. Go back, look again.

It's a shame that it didn't work out as planned, but I'm sure they must have many, many other pets to choose from that are hoping someone will come along and take them home..:goodvibes

A similar thing happened to me the end of last year. Went to just "look" and fell in love with a white shepherd that was surrendered by a serviceman who was deployed. Went home to think about it, emailed the shelter and someone else had already adopted him.

Good thing though, because a month or so later, my old neighbors moved into a rental and couldn't take their dog. They gave him to me. If I'd have taken the other guy, I couldn't have taken my friend's dog...I already had two others!

It's too bad they couldn't have called you and given you dibs though.

I know you're sad now, but everything happens for a reason.

We must think alike. I got nervous thinking the same thing.

Maybe this means that there is even a more special little dog for you out there. Good luck.

Sorry it didn't work out.

We volunteer with a rescue. There are so many dogs and cats who need homes. Keep your eye out and give it some time. You'll find another great dog.

ITA!!!!!!!!!! I am a big believer in this. It took several months for us, or shall I say our GS puppy to find us. It was so frustrating.

Then near his 1 year birthday, a kitten came into our lives. I wanted a kitten/cat hadn't had one in forever. Petsmart works with the local humane societies and they hold pet fairs. The friday I went, ended up not being one of the days of the fair. However, one of the humane society's leaders was there and started talking to me.

I adopted a kitten who had tested positive for FIV, they are a no kill shelter. And he is a black cat and some people are still kind of supersticious, I am not one of those people.

And as I am typing this: the GS pup now almost 2 is getting a bath on his head by his kitten brother.

OP- did you call yet to find out what's up with the dog?

I didn't call today. The ER was too busy to give me the peace and quiet for the phone call. I plan on calling and talking to the girl who interviewed us in the quiet room. I figure that way we'll stick in her mind, if she comes back, I'll ask her to call me ASAP.

I agree! My daughter works for our local humane society and dogs are often returned after a couple of days. They also do not hold animals - you pretty much have to be ready to adopt the dog when you see it or there is no guarantee it will be there when you go back. I wish you luck in finding another dog to give a forever home to.:lovestruc

awee.. I am sorry... Great name though... I have a 3 month old kitten named scout.
