My husband just left for a year tour in Korea and we are looking for plane tickets for both me to go visit him, and for him to come home on his midtour. Does anyone know of airlines or websites (like expedia) that always seem to have really good deals?

Thank you so much!

priceline
5 of us flew RT whiteplains, ny to orlando for $700.05
just check their site 2-3 times a day and don't be afraid to use their name your own price option (the only neg. about that is: not being able to change ticket...make sure you can definately fly that date or, it will cost more)

just a reality check-based on experience-there is no such thing as super cheap to korea-if you find something less than $1,000 dollars with taxes and fees you have gotten an absolutely amazing deal. Good Luck!

OOO very cool. I forgot about them. Thanks, I will check them out!

Anyone else?

lol I know. But I would much rather pay $1000 if I can (and not have 14 layovers) than $1500....

I see you just turned 21 so you would be eligible for many of the "Student" airfares out there. Check out www.statravel.com and www.studentuniverse.com

Another option is to look for a good consolidator fare. This evening I will send you the contact info for a few travel agents who specialize in consolidator fares to Asia. Sometimes consolidator fares are available -- and sometimes their not.

FYI, most of the deeply discounted tickets to Asia require a 6 or 7 night stay.

Depending on both of your schedules you might want to consider meeting or traveling elsewhere in Asia for a mini vacation.

In Asia they have many Low Fare Airlines like we do in the US but unlike the ones in America the ones in Asia are actually cheap to fly. (I paid $20 US Dollars with tax to fly from Phuket to Kuala Lumpur. That fare actually included a free checked bag too.) This could work to your advantage....if you see a really cheap fare into say Singapore, it may be cheaper to fly to Singapore or Tokyo and then buy a ticket on a Low Fare Airline for onward travel to Seoul.

Yes, I did just turn 21 (:cool1:) but like hte hubby, I am also military and although I am in school, I am nowhere near full time - usually just one or two classes at a time. I will check out those sites though, just in case. Thank you!

I don't really know what a consalidator fare is... so that help would be greatly appriciated!

I do plan on going out there 9 days (including the 2 days travel) but he wouldn't be able to meet me somewhere else instead because he only has 30 days of leave, and he is using that for his midtour (he gets to come home for a month in the middle of his year tour)

Thank you!!

For the "Student Airfare" as long as you are under 25 or 26 you are eligible regardless of your enrollment status.

You're quite welcome!

Consolidator fares are not published on the major search engines. Flight Consolidators buy up a large volume of tickets at once which enables them to sell them at deeply discounted prices.

I did a quick look and there appear to be some decent deals to Tokyo right now ($657 from ORD, $775 from IAD, and $779 from JFK; all including taxes).

I know very little about the military so maybe this isn't possible but I thought that military and dependents could fly on military transports. I have a friend whose dh is in Germany and she is there with him but is able to fly back on a military transport with her kids to visit her parents. Wouldn't that be the cheapest?

yea if you are close to an AFB with a lot of large transport flights going in and out check and see what AMC can do for you-it wont be luxury-but it will be cheap-on the other hand you usually need ALOT of flexiblity-and on leave you might not have that-where are you stationed?? i might be able to help more if i knew where you were and what resources you have close by.

i am station at Keesler AFB, MS and he is at Kunsan AB. I know about those hops, but I don't have alot of leave to be flexible with. I am also very OCD and I don't know if i could handle the thought of not knowing exactly when ill be flying until I am actually up in the air.. ha!
