Sunblock

We are interested in using a natural, non-chemical sunblock such as California Baby or Earth's Best; however, I've read that these are very thick and do not go on easily and the Earth's Best brand can stain clothing.

What type of sunblock do you use on your infant (over 6 months old) and do you find it works well, applies and washes off easily? Thanks!

Use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide -- they stay on the surface of the skin and are not absorbed.

Remember with infants that you don't want to put any kind of sunscreen on body parts that they tend to put into their mouths. Use shade covers such as hats or canopies to make sure that they stay mostly out of direct sunlight.

Great tips. We have a Peg Pliko P3 which has a huge sunshade and we're thinking about buying the water shoes that have SPF since her newest trick is putting her feet in her mouth and we don't want her ingesting any of the sunscreen.

Our main concern is that for daycare, she needs to have sunscreen in order to go outside, just in case she's not under the canopy the entire time. They sometimes put them in a 6-seat buggy for morning walks, but the sunshade on it isn't very good.

I've been using Blue Lizard baby formula this summer (active ingredients are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) and have been happy with it. Problem is it is difficult to find. I haven't seen it in any stores and so I made my purchase on-line (still difficult to find).

I tried California Baby (active ingredient titanium dioxide) for the first time this week. It is supposed to be very water resistant, but I found that it didn't hold up very well when DD's head started perspiring (she was a drippy mess).

I know you are looking for a non-chemical sunscreen, but just wanted to throw in a recomendation that our pediatrition gave us... Neutrogena Ultra sheer Dry Touch Sunblock spf 70 (with thier new Helioplex broadspectum uva uvb).

We used it for 2 weeks on a vacation in Mexico, and even family members asked if we left our daughter behind as she got such little color. We were in and out of the pools and the ocean each and every day, so I can certainly attest to it's sweatproof/ waterproof qualities. It helps that it is oil and PABA free too!

CVS had some Blue Lizard last time I was there. My ds is allergic to a lot of sunscreens, but Neutrogena works well for him.

Aveeno Active Naturals line is fine for children 6 months and up.

I *love* the SPF 70 spray. Very fine mist that goes on practically dry, and stays on - I'm so white, I'm see-through, and it got me through a morning at the beach with no shade (it was windy, and our umbrella bit the dust 5 minutes after we planted it).

Our ped also recommends Blue Lizard and that's what we have been using for ourselves and the kids.

Neutrogena also makes a physical block sunscreen, for sensitive skin. That's what I use, every day. I like it because it is instant protection, no waiting 15-30 minutes for it to kick in...
