Sun, Shopping, Sand, Surf, Sweat & Shamu: A Splashin Summertime Sabbatical at SVR!

I despise the shorter days......I miss my late evening walks, now that its dark so much sooner. I will admit that I've found my way into my jammies by 8 pm a few nights this week :rolleyes1 .

And you are absolutely correct about the nutty schedules of late September....gosh, I remember those days with fondness ;) . This year, I have the odd sensation of having MORE time on my hands now that Jake is in college and has his own car. I'm not ferrying him to practices morning and evening, I have no volleyball or basketball games to go watch, and half the time he's not even here for me to cook for him.

Thanks for the reassurance on the SeaWorld portion of my report. A little of my paranoia might have been showing there for a moment. I just get so darn tired of people challenging my love of that park :sad2: .... especially when it holds such a special place in my heart.
:rotfl2:I'm in my jammies every night by 8pm.

Only 2 more crazy Septembers for me and then I'm FREE. Seriously though, I'll miss it after 20 something years of doing it. I guess this year I had a little taste of what the future will be like.

Those that challenge your SW luv are probably the same types that would throw paint on your fur coat. Some people need a good dose of the real world....and a good Opthomologist. It's the opinions of the few ...not 100% reality. Step down off the mini soap box.....and thank you.

In case anyone needs to know....less than 90 shopping days until Christmas and less than that until it snows. Way to change the subject, no?

Our SeaWorld day.....continued, again! :) (and again, and again.....:rotfl:)

After taking our group pic outside Shamu Stadium, we stopped for a washroom break and then Kelly escorted us to our reserved seats....the first row after the splash zone, centre stage. She delivered us all another round of awesomely cold water bottles and then bid us adieu, explaining that her tour duties had come to an end. The show would be starting within the next few minutes then the balance of the day (which was minimal at best!) would be ours to enjoy until park closing. We gave her a small tip in appreciation for a job well done, then she was on her way.

The gentle reminders for those sitting in the affected areas came on screen immediately thereafter:

...and a few minutes later, One Ocean was officially underway! :cool1:

The killer whales are simply incredible, with their powerful size and amazing abilities. We never miss this show on each trip, as not seeing Shamu at SeaWorld is akin to visiting Disney without seeing Mickey Mouse.

The show, as always, was perfectly done. A splashing, flipping, soaking, waving, dazzling good time! :thumbsup2

I was rather melancholy when it ended, sad that our spectacular day was almost over. Good things go by WAY too quickly.

We shook hands and said goodbye to our tour friends from Long Island, then exited the stadium with just 15 or 20 minutes left before the park officially closed for the day. We still had a few park features that we hadn’t touched on during our jam-packed day, so with no time to waste, we made the split-second decision to go to the one which was brand new since our last visit to SeaWorld. Within a few minutes, we were here:

Antarctica! We couldn’t miss out on seeing the penguins today....we just couldn’t!

This area outside the exhibit apparently showcases all of the different types of penguins that are featured in Empire of the Penguin. I wished we had more time to poke around and look at it in more detail, but time was a wastin’!

We used our Quick Queues here, but didn’t need them....the stand-by time was a whopping 5 minutes (later that week, we would see stand-by times at 45 minutes and higher :crazy2: ).

Inside the pre-ride room, we were introduced to the story of Puck, a little penguin who was the last to be born in his penguin community before the winter’s harshness arrived in earnest.

Antarctica, Empire of the Penguin would feature his story as he grew from babyhood to maturity.

Look, there he is!

And....he’s getting older. And bigger!

We opted for the “wild” version of the ride, which wasn’t at all what I would consider wild but could definitely be classed as rather herky-jerky. That said, the ride isn’t the real gem of this attraction. Its these engaging fellows at the end that make it all so awesome:

What an entertaining little crew. Let me say, those penguins are downright funny creatures....so amusing with their endearing waddles and funny little swims. It was the best ending to our day that we could have had, hands down :thumbsup2. As an added bonus: it was the only time we actually felt cold all day ::yes:: . The boys, in particular, were in heaven.

By the time we finished at Antarctica, our day was done. The park had closed and the attractions were shutting down one by one. The remainder of our SeaWorld must-do’s.....Journey to Atlantis, Wild Arctic, and Kraken to name a few....would have to wait until another visit later that week. We headed to the park entrance to buy the CD of our photos at Adventure Photo, but the line was ridiculously long (apparently many other people had the same idea as we did, squeezing out every last minute of park time before taking care of the photo business) so we opted to come back the next day to get the CD burned. We hauled our weary legs to the van, which was in reality very close by but felt like a million miles.

Good golly, what an unbelievable day!! :faint: It was so busy, we didn’t even get to eat dinner before it ended!

Stopping at Steak & Shake on the way “home”, we celebrated our awesome day of surprises with a round of milkshakes (I tried the Birthday Cake one this time....I think I may have a new favourite!) and some of their famous steak burgers. We really weren’t that hungry after our long, exhausting day in the sun, so this did the trick and gave us enough energy for an evening of swimming in the Fountains pool.

Sleep came easy to all of us that night ::yes::. Thankfully, the following day was scheduled to be another day of rest and recreation at the resort. The "one day on, one day off" plan was turning out to be the best thing we could have ever done. Sometimes, I can be a real genius! :rotfl2:

Hi Gina! Thanks for the great SW report! I think I've decided two things. One, I will likely keep the one-day SW trip I have planned for December based on your report and recommendation; and two, I will not do the VIP tour! It seems awesome but probably too much for me and my two kids, at least on this trip. I'm so glad you all won it though, and thanks again for sharing! I may add the dolphin experience part. We see them all the time when we go to the beach here, and the kids would love getting up close and personal!

Do you have any suggestions for SW in December? I know there are some special events and shows. Have you done any of them?

I think we may add the Blue Man Group show at City Walk to the trip for our first night. It looks like fun, and I can get a decent price as a retired military member. Have you all seen the show? We did the Outta Control Magic Comedy Show at WonderWorks on our last trip and had a great time!

And I did want to say that I have not dropped off the face of the earth, but it has been a harrowing week. My dear sister has been fighting a long losing battle with a degenerative disease for about 12 years now. She has been in Long Term Care for the last couple of years, and was sent to emergency last Tuesday morning.

Although serious, the immediate condition was treatable, but alas it is too much for her and she is obviously giving up the fight. Family has been maintaining a 24 hour bedside vigil, and I am here for the overnight tonight with my DIS friends to keep me company. Dreaming of my happy place is a great comfort in these trying times. Sorry for the downer message, but I do really appreciate the cheer up that reading along provides.

I know all too well those long hospital nights. It was the only way kept my Dad alive for 6 weeks. My sister is a nurse and was the one to actually find him in cardiac arrest after surgery while his nurse on duty was right there. My sister walked in and asked how long he had been sleeping, and she said oh, you can wake him. My sister said she could tell right away as she tried to stir him he was in cardiac arrest, yelled at his nurse on duty to call the code, and she actually did CPR on my Dad and kept him alive!! That was 5 years ago from Bowel surgery cancer. He is 81 just got out of the hospital a week ago from having a lobe removed from cancer in his left lung, and is up and walking and giving orders already.
I hope your night goes well, and you find some company online. And I see the resemblance in those smiles, how weird!

I work in Long Term care so I understand what you're going through. I've also lost a brother to cancer so I understand the sibling aspect of it too. Please try to find some comfort in knowing that there are many people that are thinking of you and your family through this difficult time.

Don't all people look like their pets? Steven and kitty really do look alike....thanks for pointing that out. I guess in my house I'm the one that looks like the dog. :rotfl2: He's white and scruffy with a dirty face. Sound like me?

We haven't done Blue Man Group yet, but its something I'd love to see at some point. I am considering adding this to our May itinerary if the budget will allow, since we should be able to get a good discount with our Universal AP's. Maybe it will be my anniversary gift to the big guy :) .

For Christmas at SeaWorld, I would try to get tickets to Santa's Fireside Feast....we had tix for that on our trip, but ended up getting sick and had to cancel :( . Polar Express is a must-do, and get your photos done in the snow globe....the best souvenirs EVER! Also plan to see the Christmas shows. They're different from the regular, daytime shows, but just as fabulous ::yes::.

Oh...and the Sea of Trees? Not to be missed. So. Awesome. I have a video of it somewhere, and will post it later if I can find it!

Okay I honestly cannot look at a picture of your "girl" and your guy and NOT see the resemblance. I think I posted this on a previous thread, but does no one else see the similarity - they have the same smile!!

lol, I showed your post to Steve and Jake at lunch time today. Jake almost peed himself....because he could see the resemblance too!! :rotfl: Its "the look". Steve says he has the "my wife is crazy (but I still love her)" expression. The cat has the "my human is crazy (but I still love her)" expression. Okay, I may have added the part in brackets :rolleyes1 but I am sure that's what he meant! :rotfl2:

Oh, Munro....I am so sorry to hear. Sending you a big hug , as we too have been there, done that with someone we loved, and its the worst thing in the world. May you and your family find peace in the days to come. I hope it will help knowing that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hey Carrie, so glad to hear your Dad is continuing to do well. Great news! :thumbsup2

I guess in my house I'm the one that looks like the dog. :rotfl2: He's white and scruffy with a dirty face. Sound like me?

:lmao: :rotfl: :rotfl2:

Oh my God. That has me laughing right out loud.

Okay, I want to see side-by-side pics so we can see for ourselves!!

Bankr - sending good thoughts and . It is never easy to see a loved one slipping away. I hope you find happy remenberances and you always will be able to keep her in your heart.

Gina, we really enjoyed the Blue Horizons show. DD always enjoys seeing the dolphins the most, though she has a soft spot for the penguins. We spent more than a few minutes with the penguins. Some great pictures of them too.

We never had a day of rest, but took time to chill from the parks almost every day. It has been a so different touring style with the kids, now that they are older.

A beautiful Sunday for us - the weather is teasing us with temps higher than some of our summer days.

If I knew how to post pics here I might consider it but I don't and I think trying to figure it out might compare to slowly putting a hot meat fork in my eye.

That's it! It's not a smile at all!! That line has me :lmao:

And thank you and everyone for the warm wishes. Last night was a long tough one, I sat with her from 7:00 to 7:00 and it was a restless night for both of us. Came home and slept for 4 hours, but it was late afternoon before my head cleared a bit. Tomorrow she will be released back to a palliative setting at her care home, from there it could be hours, could be weeks, but I will find the strength to be there for her. God Bless.

Gina, those penguins are adorable. I want to snuggle them. I don't know if one can snuggle a penguin, but I'd be willing to try.:rotfl:

bankr63, I'm so sorry to hear you are hurting right now. Sending good thoughts and strength to both you and your sister in this trying time. I am sure it is an immeasurable comfort for you to be there for her right now. We lost my grandma in June, and I had to be there for every moment. It was what I needed to do so I understand. I hope you can get some rest.

A beautiful Sunday for us - the weather is teasing us with temps higher than some of our summer days.

Isn't it marvelous? So nice today, I spread 20 bags of mulch in my flower gardens. They have never looked this nice in the fall. And the autumn colours are so spectacular. I took a drive with my brother to the country this afternoon and the scenery was breathtaking. Even nicer to take it all in while wearing shorts, t's, sandals and the windows all the way down. How often can you do that in late September up here in the north? :thumbsup2

If I knew how to post pics here I might consider it but I don't and I think trying to figure it out might compare to slowly putting a hot meat fork in my eye.

Ah man, then I guess we will just need to use our imaginations. I must admit, though, I'm a bit disappointed!!

:grouphug: From all of us to you and your family.

They are so freaking cute, aren't they? I seriously considered buying myself a penguin stuffy to take home, but reminded myself that I'm a 40 year old woman and should be well beyond the stuffed toy stage. When it comes to our next vacation and visiting Universal, though, I'm not sure I'll be able to pass up buying myself a wand in Diagon Alley. I'm willing to grow up to a certain degree, but not too much :p .

Thursday, August 28th :).

Now mid-way through the second week of our trip, the kiddos were starting to feel the effects of all the excitement of our vacation and desperately needed to get caught up on some shut-eye. So once Steve and I were up and around, we opted to let the sleeping dogs lie, so to speak, because everyone knows that well rested teens are happy teens ::yes::. With another gorgeous morning at our disposal, though, Steve and I opted to go on a short jaunt, just the two of us, to SeaWorld to pick up the CD of our photos from the day prior (with our unlimited parking pass, these kind of little stops were easy to squeeze in). We knew we shouldn’t be gone long and would most likely be back before either of them managed to roll themselves out of bed.

We hopped into the van and were off for the short drive to SeaWorld. Since we were in no hurry and enjoyed the opportunity for some alone time, we took the Vineland/I-Drive route versus the I4. Traffic was brisk but we still arrived fairly quickly.

Presenting our parking pass to the gate agent, we were quickly (and not so friendily) informed that our pass was not valid. We told the young man that we had just used it the day prior, so he scanned it again and for the second time, told us it was not valid. We patiently explained it was a 14 day pass, and we had not activated it until the week before at Aquatica, so it could not have expired and there must be another problem. Back and forth, back and forth the discussion went.....it’s not valid. Well, it should be. Well, it isn’t. :( Finally, he gives us a short term/taxi parking permit and tells us we will need to go to Guest Services to straighten it out. Steve drives in, parks the van and stays there while I go through bag check, then the ticket turnstiles, then to Guest Services where I waited 15+ minutes for an available person to help. I explain the problem, they go back and forth between 3 different guest relations workers, and eventually decide they can’t seem to fix/re-activate/re-issue my PDF pass and give me a business-card style pass to use instead. Apparently the small card was the “old style Discovery Cove parking pass” but it would eliminate the frustrations for the remainder of our visits to the parks during the balance of our vacation.

Or not :furious:.

Back out we go, round the block, and back to the parking gates. We get the same guy. We hand him both the original PDF pass and the card-style pass (as we were instructed to do by Guest Services) and he says....the parking pass is still expired. I point to the card style one and explain that Guest Services gave us that card to use. He says, those are old and they don’t use them anymore. At this point, Steve was really starting to get peeved, so I tell him that it was good enough for Guest Services, so it had better be good enough for him as well. Finally, after pleading our case (and we’re now a good 45 minutes past our original arrival time and we still haven’t made it to Adventure Photo), he grudgingly allows us to enter and we mercifully get a parking space :worship:.

So much for the unlimited parking pass being the “easy” way to go!

At Adventure Photo, there was no line and we had our CD burned very quickly. Unfortunately, despite having explained to the photo clerk that the photos were from the day prior, she didn’t change the date on the pictures to reflect the day of the visit, and all of our photos have the wrong date (August 28th versus the 27th) as a result :headache:.

Finally, we had our CD in hand and were on our way.....what was to have taken no time to complete had officially taken almost all morning. Ah well, no worries, as thankfully we had nothing but time at our disposal that day. On the way back to the villa, we took a nice drive around Downtown Disney (and quickly decided that traffic and parking woes in that area would mean we wouldn’t bother making a stop there during the balance of our vacation), then headed back to see if the kiddos were up and alive yet.

Not only were they up, they had lunch ready and waiting :thumbsup2 (and were wondering where the heck we had gone :rotfl:). Now on the downside of our holiday, they did a great job at creating a meal from the various items still remaining from our grocery expeditions the week prior.

We spent a lazy, relaxing afternoon together in the Fountains pool. For dinner, we continued enjoying our rest day by ordering take-out from Buffalo Wild Wing. The boys picked up our order from the Crossroads location while us ladies readied the table and tossed some garlic bread in the oven.

We feasted on an assortment of boneless wings, seasoned fries and mozzarella sticks.

Jake was particularly happy about this meal.....Buffalo Wild Wing is one of his favourites. And take-out wings mean left-overs for late-night snacking :thumbsup2. Life is good!

After dinner, we decided it was time to get off our bums and do something outside of the resort for the evening hours. It was a beautiful night....a perfect night for a round of golf....so we embarked on the short journey to Kissimmee en route to:

Hehe - I think mini golf is a must in every Florida vacation!

And yep, a sleeping late teen is much more civil when allowed to get up at 10am and meet up with the rest of the family.

Sorry to hear so much issues with the parking pass. Guess we were lucky the year we used it. While we got some odd looks from the parking attendants some of the times we used it, but we were never denied or told it was not valid. Hmmm, not for the better since our visit several years ago. At least I had no issues with my Super Grover last year. Even got preferred parking in San Diego SW and all the Busch parks in Florida.

::yes::

When at Disney we now hit rope drop without dd most days and take her back with us after our mid day break. It makes everyone MUCH happier that way!

That's nuts about the parking pass! I can't believe he said you couldn't use the one Guest Services gave you.

Those boneless wings look yummy!

P.S. Just caught up, seems I missed a few pages!

Your SeaWorld pictures are gorgeous.

I love those pet shows...I think they have the same one at Busch Gardens Williamsburg...with all rescued pets as well.
