No amount of tan is worth getting skin cancer (or wrinkles later in life). DH is a redhead with freckles, and, while I'm much darker, I've had skin cancer. We both used a #45 waterproof product made for babies, borrowed from my granddaughter. I can't remember which product, but it came from Wal-Mart, and it worked wonders. We applied it right after showering each morning, and then regularly throughout every day, regardless of what our plans were. We were very careful to cover every spot that might be exposed--except the day we went to CC. Somehow or other I missed that little spot between my bathing suit strap and my underarm area in the back, and got quite burned there. It looked really funny for a few days, and hurt like--well, I'll leave that part up to your imaginations!
I always wear sunscreen, even at home, even in the winter. An unexpected fringe benefit of that (I've been doing it since I was young enough that my mother used to apply it!) is that, even at the advanced age of almost 50, I have no sun-induced wrinkles or dry skin!
