I prefer to visit in January/February...but I did visit the world once in June and I swore, NEVER again.
I may have an opportunity to go again, and this time it be with friends. Further the Frozen Ride will be open.

Summer to me means more people, longer lines, and B.O. The heat and humidity really get to me. Last time I stayed until 1 or 2 in the afternoon and then I went back to the hotel. I warned the gang I might do this again.

How cool are the evenings? Is it worth going back after dark?
How do you Disney fanatics manage to survive a summer trip?

Bring good sun protection and drink plenty of water. Do rope drop, break to go swimming or rest at your resort in the afternoon, and return in the evenings. Summer nights are great. Be sure to stay at a resort with a good pool.

To echo the great advice above... Siesta. When it's hot, hot, hot, take a break and cool off during the hottest part of the day. Maybe try parks in the morning, cocktail (virgin or regular, whatever you prefer) or ice cream by the pool at lunchtime (in the shade, of course), then head back to the parks just as it starts to cool down. Hydration is really important if you are sensitive to heat, but make sure you keep your salts/aminos up, too.

Living here I'll answer these questions.

How cool are the evenings? - they aren't. LOL You didn't say when in the summer but June/July/Aug average temp day time is 91 and evening is high around 79. It's not cool in the summer here at all.

Is it worth going back after dark? - The only way to do it on the cool side.

How do you Disney fanatics manage to survive a summer trip? - personally we don't go in the summer but on the rare occaision we pop in for a quick visit (being a local and AP holder will do that to you). We go for a specific thing so a plan of action is required so we aren't in the heat anymore than we have to be. We drink until we can't anymore and walk through as many stores/AC locations as possible. Mid day breaks are a must. Hottest time - 2-6pm.

Apply sunscreen every 3 hours minimum.

I've gone in August several times and I drink tons of water/crystal light. Leave the parks
around 2 and go back around 6-6:30. Plus, I have chilly towels that work wonders
anytime of day.. I wear one around my neck and carry one in a baggie soaked in cold
water, I do add ice to the bag before I need the towel to be able to get the full effect.
You may think you are hydrated, but, don't even think you are. Drink more...

Stay in your air conditioned room lol...or go during cooler months. You couldn't pay me to go in the summer again. I'm not sure how many years ago it was that you visited in the summer, but if it's been more than a couple you will be in for some SHOCKINGLY larger crowds.

I've never been in the summer but I've been in October twice with record-breaking heat (upper 90's), and one of the most important times to stay hydrated is when sitting out waiting for a parade or in any un-sheltered crowds during the day. All the people around can make you feel hotter and there usually is not any shade available. This is a good time to re-apply sunscreen and make sure to drink a lot of water. I'd say the nights are a little bit better without the sun bearing down, but don't expect the humidity to lift up at all

I've been a few times during the summer months and nothing makes it more tolerable than water, water, water and plenty of breaks throughout the day! If you're staying on property its really great to grab the bus back to your resort for a couple hours of rest and pool time, we always feel fresh and recharged for the rest of the day! If your resort isn't an option we try to hit the indoor shows and rides when the sun is at its worst, like Hall of Presidents or It's a Small World. That gives you a quick break out of the sun and a chance to re-hydrate! The crowds aren't as easy to escape so definitely consider using fast passes for the bigger rides; Splash Mountain is definitely good to consider as a chance to cool off as well :D

Go to the park at opening. Ride as much as you can until you feel too hot...probably midday. Have lunch somewhere with air conditioning, go back to your room, take a cool shower, sleep all afternoon and go back to the parks around 5pm until closing. You don't need sunscreen and a hat at night which will make you feel much cooler.

When I have been at WDW with teens in July, I followed the plan above which worked really well for us, although you end up going through two outfits a day. The teens slept all day and came to the parks just for the evening. :D
