Summer Reading Ideas for DD

I don't think anyone else mentioned the Rainbow Fairy series, by Daisy Meadows. My DD6 has DEVOURED the entire series that's available here in the U.S. And she likes many of the other series your daughter likes.

My kids have enjoyed many of the titles mentioned and I found a few I had forgotten about! (I used to teach before the kids were born and kept all the books I had in my classroom)

Another series I don't think I've seen mentioned yet are the Carole Marsh Mysteries. They fictional stories set in real places. My kids love that they learn about wherever "Grant" & "Kristina" are (the author's grandkids that are in every book) and have a (non-scary) mystery to solve!

And to boot... mystery No. 11 is set in WDW at the MK! "What was supposed to be a vacation for four real kids at Walt Disney World turns into a wild ride as first one kid disappears, then another, and there’s only one left to solve the mystery!"

Becareful, even if child is able to read at given level, sometimes subject matter is "iffy". I had read "Tales of Fourth Grade Nothing" as a child MANY times and loved it. Didn't think twice about my 2nd grader reading it until i managed to pick it up and the next chapter was called "Santa Who". It spilled the beans on the Santa issue and i want let him BELIEVE as long as possible. I slyly said i would like to read aloud a chapter to him since i remembered enjoying the book. Though i'm normally not one to censor, i skipped over the Santa reveals. That was a close one! Sometimes a challenge to find appropriate stuff for gifted readers. My son was at 6th grade level in 1st grade--certainly lots of 6th grade content you don't want a first grader getting into just yet.

Also be careful of the third Junie B. Jones book, Junie B. Jones and Her Big Fat Mouth (that's the one my DD thought it was at least). It gives away the whole Disney character thing, if they don't already know, expect some questions.

Carlotta's Kittens, Polo's Mother, The healing of Texas Jake - I don't remember the order they go in. They are all by Phylis Reynolds Naylor and are about 2 cat brothers and their adventures. I even enjoyed them.

I was going to mention these too. I'm surprised you are the only one who has! My DD is also 6.5 and now a rising first grader as well. She can read them all by herself now, but we have been reading them aloud since she was 5 years old. We ADORE them!!

Another older fun series is "The Littles." I read these when I was younger! They are very cute and age appropriate.

I will not allow any Junie B Jones. She is too sassy for my taste.

I liked the Roald Dahl, Judy Blume, and Beverly Cleary books when I was that age.

I'm so with you on this one. My DD is going into 1st grade and loves to read. We went to the library Monday and checked out 13 books- at least 5 or 6 were chapter books. She had read them all by the next day. It's not that she reads all the time either, just fast! She loves several of the series that have been mentioned- Animal Ark by Ben Baglio (there are tons of these to choose from), Magic Tree House, Pony Pals, A to Z Mysteries. Her teacher read Little House in the Big Woods to her class this year, so she's interested in finishing those books. E.B White's Stuart Little and Trumpet of the Swan, and George Selden's books like Cricket in Times Square were favorites of mine as a kid. Also Encyclopedia Brown and Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books. She likes the Magic School Bus books, too, and we've started checking out more non fiction books about animals lately.

In addition to the library, the thrift store, yard sales, and the Scholastic warehouse sales are good places to find cheap books. Congratulations on your new reader!

What /where is a scholastic warehouse sale?? You don't mean bookfairs do you?

Wow, I am so happy to hear of all the reading going on this summer. My DD8 is also a "book worm". It is sometimes tough having enough books for her & I am a teacher w/hundreds of books. I also have to be very careful w/content. There is a big difference in what she is able to read & what is appropriate for her to read. She just discovered the American Girl Mystery series & is practically devouring them.
One thing to remember... be sure that you occasionally check your child's reading comprehension. You want to be sure that your child is comprehending what she is reading. Every now and then, I have my daughter tell me about the story & ask some questions. I also make a point to read to her sometimes.

Scholastic Warehouse Sales are the best! In Indianapolis they have them once or twice a year. You get the books dirt cheap. I am assuming they are trying to clear out their warehouse. You have to go to the warehouse. Ours was usually around Christmas and the end of the school year. I used to go all the time when I was a teacher. That is who they advertise it to. I've been a couple of times since I became a stay at home mom, and my kids loved it!

I'm not sure how to find out if you have a warehouse near you. The Indy one is on the westside of town, and I am not. It was worth the drive when I was teaching!

My DD loves Geronimo Stilton books. They are colorful chapter books with great illustrations. She's reading--Geronimo and the Gold Medal Mystery. At the end of the story it gives information about the Modern Olympics.
