I am planning a vacation from Australia to the US later this year and was wondering when kids went back to school after their Summer holidays. I realize every state is different, but generally when is it?
I was originally looking at WDW 19th September-3rd October, but I can get cheaper flights if we do WDW 30 August - 12th September. Is this likely to be busy and will I regret not paying the extra money on flights because the park is too crowded. I have 6 young kids aged 2-12, so don't want to spend hours in lines.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

Most of the schools will start by that time and the park should be less crowded then. One easy trick go to Disney season pass section for FL residents and you will blackout dates which ends before sep 30 which means less people

Schools go back anywhere from mid-August until the day after Labor day which in 2015 is Sept 7th. Because Labor day is a 3 day weekend you might have higher crowds from local Floridians that weekend (5-7) but the days from the 8-12 will be some of the quietest of the year since all kids will be back in school and very few parents would take their kids out the first couple weeks of school. Sept 19-Oct 3 will also be quiet for Disney. If you're saving quite a bit of money on the flights I'd go the earlier time.

Schools in the south typically start in mid to the last week of August. The others are all in school by Labor Day and would be September 8th. We are in Northern US and start the 8th of September.

Based on my experience, I would opt for September 19th-October 3. You will get the F&W festival and Halloween decorations during your trip. The weather, while not a big difference, may be a little better as well.

^ I agree, since you are coming from so far and will likely not be back often if at all I would go for Sept 19-Oct 3.
My kids go back September 8, and that is pretty typical in our entire state as well as a lot of northern states and like the PP said, Sept 5-7 is Labor day weekend and I would think that would be a pretty busy weekend for locals/those within driving distance since it is a 3 day weekend for most.

Thank you everyone for your advice. We were there in September in 2013 so the kids have been before, and after taking in the pros and cons we decided to go the earlier time and just go somewhere else for labor day weekend. The difference between the 2 airfares was huge. Thanks again for your input.
