DDD with DDD - or - Doing Disney Different with Darling Disney Daughter

Part 9 – Day 8 onwards - Friday 25th July onwards

The non Disney part of the holiday.

Just to finish off my trippie I thought I would do brief summary of the rest of our trip – the non Disney part. I hope this is OK with everyone. It will probably consist of lots of photos.

We nearly always do Disney as part of a longer holiday in France and for various reasons have usually done the non Disney bit first ending on an exhausting high in Disney. However this year because of our APs ending at the end of July we had decided to do Disney first then go across to Brittany for 12 days. As it turned out this was so much better as it gave us time to really wind down afterwards.

We left Disney on the morning of 25th July to drive to Dol de Bretagne which is about 15 miles inland from St Malo. We have been to the campsite there a few times but hadn’t been for 5 yrs so were really looking forward to it as it’s a lovely site – very pretty with loads to do and excellent facilities but also with loads of nice places locally to visit as well.
We had an uneventful trip there and arrived mid afternoon. We were shown to our mobile home which was to be home for the next 12 days and found we had been given one of the brand new models on a lovely big pitch in a lovely area of the site.

After unpacking we decided to go and explore and get a pizza for tea but it had started raining – however we decided to brave it and donned our coats – that was actually to be the only time we wore them in the 3 weeks we were in France.

I cant really remember what we did when as I didn’t keep a note as I did in Disney but do remember that we had a fantastic time. We really chilled (in a nice way not a cold way) and relaxed and just had loads of fun.

The site is lovely and has 3 small swimming pools (no slides or anything), as well as a waterpark with lots of slides and they had just opened an indoor pool with lazy river and slides and an outdoor wave pool. DD had a fantastic time in this and went almost everyday.

There are 2 lakes for fishing and another for playing on – you can hire pedalos and canoes. There are loads of ducks in this lake who ended up getting loads of bread off us most days as I love feeding ducks.

There are also stables (as well as new riding school which has just opened) and DD went twice for a ride. The first time she was given a pony Hermine which DH had to lead round. Well I say DH had to lead round really the pony led us round. There was a route you were meant to follow but someone had moved some of the signs round so we kept going the wrong way but everytime we did that the pony – Hermine nuzzled DH and made him go the other way.
The 2nd time we had booked Hermine again but when we got there he wasn’t available so DD was given a horse instead. She loved it and was so confident riding. She now wants riding lessons.

We also went on the driving range a few times – first time DD had done anything like this and played Badminton, boules and read.

We also made a few visits to the supermarkets to stock up on wine to bring home.


As well as going into Dol and other local towns we visited Dinan one afternoon and Mont St Michel twice in the evening. We leaned a few years ago that Mont St Michel is much nicer in the evening – not as crowded and the sunsets are wonderful.

We also walked to the summer Sunday market in the next village and met our favourite local painter. He is originally from Wales but lives in the area now and paints portraits and watercolours of the area. We bought quite a few off him a few years ago and he drew a portrait of DD This time we ended up buying another painting and one for DS as a present.

We also visited a few local villages and car boot sales (which we love as they are totally different in France – people literally empty their attics and farm buildings and sell everything. Id have loved to have had room in the car to buy the 2 enormous cartwheels – they would have looked brilliant in our garden)

[A Small World]

We were spending our last night in Calais before getting the tunnel home so decided to go there via the D Day beaches. DD is really interested in anything to do with history and especially the 2nd world war. She has visited the D day museum at Portsmouth so was really keen to see where it all took place.
We stopped off at Arromanches and eventually found a parking space. We walked to the beach intending visiting the museum but as it was a lovely hot day there were lots of people in the sea so I decided to walk back to the car to get our picnic and DDs swimming things whilst DH and DD went into the museum

We then had a picnic overlooking Mulberry harbour and then went onto the beach for DD to go into the sea. We didn’t have long though as the tide was coming in fast and the space on the beach was getting smaller and smaller.

We left Arromanches and headed to Calais where we visited the hypermarket first to stock up on yet more wine. We then found our way to the campsite, found our home for the night, went to the bar for a meal and a last few drinks before our holiday ended.
The next day we packed the rest of the things in the car and decided there was room for yet more wine so before going to the tunnel we visited Euro Cite yet again.
We grabbed a burger at the tunnel terminal and before we knew it we were back in England heading North.

We’d had a fantastic holiday and it had seemed to go on for ever - in a good way of course. When we talked about our time at Disney it felt as though we were talking about a different holiday as we had relaxed so much.
It had also been very different to previous holidays in a lot of ways hence the trippie title. We had tried different restaurants, done less rushing round in the park and spent more time enjoying the hotels and whole resort.

We also came to several decisions whilst on holiday - we were definitely going to stay at DLH one trip, myself and DH both decided we were definitely going to lose weight and do more exercise, I decided I wasnt going to let work take over my life as much and was going to spend less time on the Dis boards - well Im afraid to say we've failed miserably so far (on all but one of them) especially on the last one as Ive been on here more since we got back than ever before but its all good fun and being able to share my trips and my planning is all part of the DLP experience.

That campsite looks lovely! We drove past the "exit" to Dol de Bretagne on the motorway last week lol - we were holidaying in Normandy (St Aubin-sur-mer) but drove to La Bourbansais Zoo in Brittany to meet some friends. Now that I've seen 'real pics' of the holiday park, it's definitely on the list for next year (we're thinking of going back next year but to Brittany instead) - either Dol or Benodet. The kids love the beach (only for the sand, not the sea) but they prefer the pool anytime and the pools where you were look much 'friendlier' as in more shallowy bits which will be great for my son.

We have also done Benodet as well and really liked it there. We've been holidaying in France for about 17 yrs and the site at Dol is by far our favourite- theres just so much to do but yet its so relaxing at the same time

Dol de Bretagne

that's funny - I was looking at that campsite over the weekend as we're considering it for next year - it does look really good from your photos. You certainly seemed to enjoy your holiday - thanks for sharing.

There are 2 big campsites in Dol de Bretagne (or there used to be) - the one we stay at it Chateau des Ormes. Is that the one you're looking at? its absolutley lovely and we are going back in May/June next year
