Summer Block Party

Last year was our first trip as DVC members and we attended the Summer Block Party. Is this something they do every year? And is it always on Thursday? It was a lot of fun and I want to include time in our upcoming July trip. But I can't find any info about it on the DVC member site. Thanks!

I know I originally posted this a while ago, but I still have not seen any info on a block party for this summer. The only thing on the DVC member site is the Welcome Home Wednesdays which I haven't heard good things about. Anyone know if there will be a block party or some other member event? Thanks!

Here's the info on this year's summer event:

Summer on the Savanna, an exclusive (and complimentary) Member event, will take place on Thursday afternoons in the courtyard just outside of the International Gateway enterance to Epcot July 12-August 23 from 3-5 pm. Attending Members and their guests will mingle with their Disney neighbors while enjoying a sensory journey through the African plains, complete with music, interactive entertainment and light refreshments.

I always penciled the "Welcome Home Wednesdays" and Summer Block Parties into our itinerary, but we never made any of them. When we received info on this years events I was thrilled! We will actually HAVE to walk by on our way to Epcot! YAY!

We have attended the last two winter member events at that same area at Epcot and really enjoyed them. It was nice to meet other members and the "light refreshments" were very nice. I think it's a great location and also catches the attention of non-members ( good advertising!). I hadn't seen this on the DVC members site ( thanks for posting!) and will definitely be going at some point this summer- woo hoo!---Kathy

It was in Vacation Magic and I just received an email from our guide as well. I was unaware that the Welcome Home Wednesdays were still goin gon as well...here is what it says...

Gallop over to Summer on the Savanna to help us celebrate our newest Disney Vacation Club Resort, Disney's Animal Kingdom Villas! At this exclusive, complimentary event, you'll gather with a herd of fellow Members and enjoy refreshments, entertainment and more. Taking place just outside of the International Gateway entrance to Epcot®, Summer on the Savanna will be held each Thursday afternoon, 3:00-5:00 pm, from July 12-August 23, 2007.

Welcome Home Wednesdays
You're invited to Welcome Home Wednesdays, a celebration for Members held most Wednesdays at 4:00 pm at Atlantic Dance Hall in Disney's BoardWalk entertainment district. This weekly extravaganza takes the place of Member Update.

At Welcome Home Wednesdays, you'll enjoy refreshments, be entertained and enlightened during a fun interactive game, and hear about the latest Disney Vacation Club news and Member perks. To add to the festivities, be sure to wear your favorite Member t-shirts, hats, and pins to show your Disney Vacation Club pride.

The "Summer on the Savanna" info was on the member website, but for only about 2 hours. It was taken off very quickly for some reason.

We went to the Epcot "backyard ?" a year or two ago. I will have to disagree. I think it was much of nothing. They give you cookies, punch, and you UGH-stand in a long line to meet characters. They also give you a DVC logo item.
I think ours was a key chain...

I mean, don't get me wrong-it was a very nice gesture, but NOTHING to go out of your way to see or go to. We just happened to stay at BWV, and go into Epcot that way (at IG), so we went by it. By all means, don't take a bus or drive to it.. Not worth that, but again IMHO......

I wonder why they stopped the Block Party in DTD. I thought it was a lot of fun. We got DVC visors and light up pins. There were free drinks and snacks. We had complimentary massages which was amazing! They also had carnival type games (free of charge) where people won Disney pins. There was a DJ and a hula hoop contest, which my sister almost won, and they gave luggage tags to all who participated. Overall I thought it was a fun time and worth the trip over to DTD. Not sure why they wouldn't do it again.

I'm thinking they wouldn't do the DTD event this year perhaps due to costs, perhaps because alot of the construction at PI is now completed? I can also see why having something different is a better idea so we don't end up having expectations that can't be met in the future. People get angry when something is "taken away" that they once got to enjoy. Other than that, your guess is as good as mine. ---Kathy

You're probably right, I am sure it did cost a lot since everything was free for members who came. But it was a nice perk. It was our first year as DVC members and it really made us feel like we were getting something special. We will still go to the Epcot event and see how that is but I'm not expecting it to be the same.

I went to summer on the Savannah yesterday, and it was pretty much the standard "summer block party". There was a drawing, you got coupons for two treats - various ice cream treats or animal crackers/pretzels - no popcorn. There was fruit punch, a dj doing fun dances with the crowd, face painting and a craft table for kids. Fun, but just the usual.

The promo item this time is kind of unique. It is a little circle pouch that you can clip on to you bag or belt. You open the velcro up and turn it inside out, an voila' you have an Animal Kingdom Lodge/DVC floppy safari type hat. Kind of cool.
