Are there any thoughts or theories floating around about next summer and if it will have slightly lower crowds due to people waiting to go in the fall when Star Wars Land opens?

Who knows...that may be a factor and it may not be. I don't think there's any true way to predict.

Generally speaking, summer has been "slower" anyway, so that's what I'd hope for...but no way to really know.

I think summer 2019 will be less crowded than summer 2020. I suspect there are those who will wait till 2020 to go see SWGE. And Mickey/Minnie Runaway Train and Ratatouille won't be open until sometime in 2020 most likely.
How much less crowded is anyones guess.

I hope so! We're going in mid-August, would love it if crowds were lower because people were pushing off their trips until fall.

There are numerous thoughts and theories - and most of them should be ignored or discounted as highly speculative. Unless someone keeps up with Disney and/or plans a year or more in advance (for example, many posters here), most people aren't even aware that SW:GE is opening next year - the general public doesn't keep up with that stuff, or won't delay their summer vacation to sometime towards the end of the year based on an as-yet-unannounced opening date. Disney people in the know might - but even looking at these boards, for every person waiting until later in the year there seems to be at least one other person going earlier to avoid the craziness.

I would assume that summer 2019 will be like most recent summers - and that crowd levels are far more likely to be affected by things like the economy, the weather/heat, ticket prices, discounts, etc. - than by whether guests are time-shifting vacations for Star Wars. As for "slightly lower" crowds - in Disney terms, that probably just means a 110 minute wait for Flight of Passage instead of 140 minutes.

For what it's worth, some friends were planning their summer 2019 trip. They go every other year, and they last went in 2017.

They said they were hoping to see the new star wars stuff. When I told them it wouldn't be open yet, they decided to postpone until 2020, and do a cruise in 2019 instead.

We had 100% planned on Disneyland California this summer, but on realizing the opening date of Star Wars there could quite possibly coincide with our trip we opted for WDW instead =)
