just weighed our suitcases and BEFORE we put anything in them they are around 7 kg :headache:

anyone know what you can get light weight suitcases or is 6-7 kg normal for a large suitcase anyway

You can get lighter weight wheelie suitcases, but you are still looking at 4/4.5/5kg even for the lightweight ones...

The alternative is to start looking at holdalls (some have wheels).

check your airline and see how much you are allowed to take beofre you splash on new luggage. some allow more than others. Tesco do a cheap range in luggage.

Our friends have the luggage holdals and they are great. The are still robust even though they are basically a big sports bag but are quite a bit lighter than a normal large suitcase. They only thing they don't like about them is that clothes crease if laid flat, but if you roll them they are ok.

Next time we replace our luggage we will definitely be getting the holdals.

Its not worth buying new luggage before your trip. When you are away and if you have time check out the Samsonite store at Beltz (sorry dont know the new name). Every time we go we always buy more luggage and its very reasonable (we paid $80 for a very large holdal with wheels and a few compartments and an extending handle) its also lightweight and obviously because is a bag it doesnt take up hardly any room in you hotel or at home.

Dh decided to buy a holdal at the designer outlet here and I'm struggling to fill it and it's only weighing 13Kg. We've also got a fab one from tesco which only cost £10 and it looks like it will be going empty lol. Both have wheels and handles and are easy to use.

Woolworth's do some good lightweight suitcases, i've got 2 'Metropolis' cases, the last one i bought was from Woolworth's, its really big and only cost £20. It also only weighs 3.1kg. The other case i bought was from Boyes, i think its only a northern chain though, mostly selling seconds, but its lasted me for years, the only reason i bought a new one was because i wanted a slightly bigger one.

I looked at some in Tesco and they now have the size, capacity and weight of the case which is really good for comparisons. The large one I looked at weighed 5.6kg which is a fair bit to start with (we only had 20kg allowance when we went to Iceland last week so that's a big chunk of the allowance before you put anything in). I'm now looking at a set from Argos, the largest one has 105L capacity and yet weighs only (!) 5kg.

This is interesting as we binned our suitcases as they got quite damaged when we moved house and we are looking for something very lightweight and easily stored.

I'll certainly look into holdall's.

Cheers.

Another vote for the holdalls here:goodvibes We bought ours at the Premium outlets in Orlando as theres almost always a sale, you just dump your old cases and use the new ones:thumbsup2

If you're anything like us then you need more room on the way back anyway :rolleyes1

I need a case for my upcoming trip and was told about holdalls.

I'm a bit worried about the fragile stuff I might want to buy in the parks though (i've got my eye on a crystal tigger). Has anyone got experince of these as I would like to save weight and buy a holdall but not at the expense of my holiday goodies???

As I said in my earlier post I always buy new luggage when I am there (but I go for a decent brand rather than cost as you know you are getting good quality). I also buy lots of fragile items (like you I also collect the crystal). When I pack to come home I tend to pack in layers. I pack to all of my fragile items are in the middle of my bags surrounded by lots of clothes and separate the fragile items over a few different bags. Obviously there is no guarantee that things will not break but I have found that if items are well wrapped and well packed they should be ok. Alternatively if the item is small you could always put it in your hand luggage.

Andy, Lou & Meg - so do you buy holdalls? From your previous post I got the idea you buy hard cases from samsonite for some reason????

Large Holdal which could sound like a suitcase lol:)

No always buy holdals (at least 35"). I find them easier to manage and I am able to get more into them.

This thread has been very helpful as we are flying with virgin and last time we used 2 disney suitcases as hand luggage (101 dalmations for me and Finding Nemo for the DH...he looked very cool!)

We were unsure if we could use them this time as with all the restrictions.

Has anyone been since these have been imposed and used a samll suitcase as hand luggage?

I guess i'm still worried that they won't allow us to use them...

I've used a small suitcase a couple of times recently, including Virgin (not the US tho'). As long as it's within the sizes allowed as cabin baggage I don't think it matters what it is (case, backpack etc)
