I was 15 or so, and with 4 kids, my parents decreed one carry on each. And this was before the days of "smart" carry ons that fit well into the overhead.
Anyway, went to FL for a week and we each got one carry on and we just recycled clothing and rolled our stuff really small and got it all in.
Not saying it was the greatest trip ever, but it was definately possible. Although we complained so much, my parents never tried it again
