Should I store my "fat clothes" or should I give them away?

I am down about 23 lbs. and have a ways to go, but would love to take away the clothes that are just too big for me now.

What would you do? What have you done?

Store for a year or throw away?

Is storing a crutch?

Is throwing away a "euphoric" idea?

Please help.

My opinion is get rid of them. Try giving them to the Salvation Army, or a local homeless shelter.

I did this and it felt so good. It means I will not go back.

Dr. Phil also says this in his new book. If you keep them, you are saying you don't think you can do this and it DOES give you that crutch to fall back on.

Its not easy, and it's not cheap replacing them. For me, that means that I will work harder because I won't have clothes to wear if I gain weight. I have bought a lot of new clothes recently, still need lots more. It's tough when you need new work and casual play clothes. I still don't have anywhere nearly enough, but I try to buy a few new things every couple of weeks.

My "Fat" clothes were getting so huge, that they didn't stay up and I looked Fat in them. Now with my new clothes, I get so many compliments, and I feel so great in them. I walk down the hall like I look like a million bucks. Its a great feeling.

I say go for it. Free yourself!!

Good luck,
Melanie

MelanieC said it all.

Another suggestion on what to do with some of the clothes: If you can find a local chapter of "Dress for Success" there is another place to donate wearable clothing for women in need who are looking to enter the workplace. "Thumbsize" (larger) clothing is ALWAYS appreciated.

I hope this doesn't come off sounding selfish, but I have sold my nicer clothing on eBay and am paying off our Janaury DVC point rental with the proceeds from those sales.

I am all for donating clothing too--just trying to offer another suggestion.

HTH!

I agree with getting rid of them which is what I did with most of mine when I originally lost my weight.

Although I was somewhat thankful that I kept a few things, because I ended up getting pregnant a year later and went back up some obviously. When I had lost my weight - getting pregnant was the last thing on my scope of possibilities to come. In the beginning I needed something other than maternity to bridge the gap. Now back on my way down, I am reusing some of the old clothes working my way back into my now older smaller clothes. The moral to this story - if you are in a position where you are sure you won't be getting pregnant (I don't know you at all) then take the leap and ditch them...it is liberating!!!!

Like the others said- make the big clothes go away.

Do not keep the big clothes unless you expect to need to wear them again. And why would you be planning to fail? If you're really committed to getting healthy and losing weight, do not keep that crutch around.

I've thrown lots of stuff away (things that looked a tad worn, for instance.) Lots of stuff I've donated to our local homeless shelter/resale shop operation. And some of my best and favorite pieces I've been able to give to my mom (she's just a few sizes behind me.)

Keeping the larger sizes in the closet seems to be an admission that you expect to fail. And that's not the kind of LOSERs we have here at WISH!!!

I still have mine - moved them into a different closet
But what do you do with the middle clothes? ya know the ones that you bought when you lost weight but before you finished loosing the weight?
Im attached to them and dont want to give them up!

Ditch the clothes. That's what I did when I lost 50 lbs a few years ago.....guess what? When I started to regain, there was no way I was going to buy new 'fat' clothes. So after a few months of wearing the same 5 outfits over and over I joined WISH. Goodness knows how much I would have re-gained if I'd still had a closet full of the big stuff.

Also, do take your nicer clothes to a consignment shop or sell them on e-bay....you have a new wardrobe to fund!

I also agree with getting rid of them, use whatever method you want whether it is charity, EBAY or whatever. You don't need those clothes that don't fit and it you don't have them you can't use the excuse, well if I gain it back, I still have something to wear.

I have been getting rid of my clothes as I have been going down in sizes. It is a great feeling and you need to make room for your new clothes that FIT.

Just wanted to echo what everyone else is saying- GET RID OF THEM!! You don't need them hanging around as a "safety net" for gaining weight! I just got rid of my first bag of way too big clothes and it felt GREAT! And as someone else mentioned you need to make room for the smaller clothes that you'll be wearing now! Congratulations on your success!

Definitely get rid of them!!!! If you don't, then you'll grow back into them - that's the rationale. I, too, sold some of the better stuff on ebay but I gave 6 bags to the Salvation Army. I have been fortunate because a friend lost weight over the past year and as she loses a size she passes the stuff on to me.

Sell 'em, have a garage sale, put 'em on ebay, or take them to a donation center and get a receipt for your taxes.

Best of luck and congratulations on the loss,
Adele

Well i sold mine on Ebay and used that money to buy more fitted clothes on ebay and to pay for a three day incentive trip for my family. (my incentive to keep it up trip). I agree with everyone else do it and move on that's what this is all about throw them out, give them away, or sell them it's up to you but you don't need those clothes anymore.

I second this suggestion. Dress for Success is a wonderful organization and they deserve all the support they can get!

When I started this journey I was a size 22/24, I am currently a 14, sometimes a 16 depending on the manufacturer (but I am finally into a size 14 Tommy Hilfiger!!! :bounce:) All I do is save the next size up, all the rest are history, as I transition to another size I give another larger size away. I have sold some in a consignment store and I have given some away to people I knew could use them. If you are serious about losing weight and making a lifetime change then I say get rid of them. My philosophy is if you hold on to them then you are giving yourself permission to some day wear them again.

OK, here's one "crafty" idea for old blouses with long sleves and nice cuffs. I do this with blouses that may get stained or are now too big, but that I love the material. Cut the sleves off, sew up a seam where you have cut and turn the sleve into a wine bottle gift bag. The cuff goes around the top of the bottle and get's tied with ribbon or fabric around the neck of the bottle. This is really cute with a white dress shirt sleve and black ribbon....kind of looks like formal wear for your wine!

I wear suits to work- I found a good tailor and had my favorite suits altered. I never spent more than $50 per suit & sometimes alot less. I had several good suits that I really liked & having them altered allowed me to continue wearing them. It was also a cost savings device, because even at $50 for alterations, new suits cost alot more. Most pants suits, that I buy new, must be altered (because I have short legs!!).
I also gave some of my best BIG blouses to pregnant office mates. While they weren't maternity clothes, they served them well as their waistlines grew.

sueg - do you, or anyone else for that matter, know if a wedding gown can be sized down? The reason I ask is I bought a wedding gown that I love in a size 18 when I thought I was getting married last June. I am basically that size again now but I plan on loosing more so when I do get married (not sure when) I would love to not have to go out and buy a new dress, especially if the style is no longer available. It would probably need to be sized down to a 14 since it runs a bit small. If I can't tailor it I better start saving up b/c my mom won't pay for another gown.

honeymo,
I had my wedding gown sized down. I don't see any reason why you couldn't.

I think all of the ideas are great. However, one fabulous WISH'er passed down her larger clothes to me! This was so nice, since I couldn't really afford to buy new clothes. I especially hate the idea of buying your current size, when you are still planning on losing more. ;)

But, I am now going to pass on this tradition and pass on my outgrown clothes to others on their weight loss journey. There is no way I can hang on to them...I've already got all of my size 8's still waiting for me in the basement!
