suggestions, please...

I would like to buy a small dig camera to take with us to the world on our next visit. Hubby has a sweet DSLR, and I have gotten very spoiled as to the quality and speed. However, I am not taking it with us this time out of fear of something happening to it, and it gets heavy after awhile. My current cam is VERY slow...the delay makes it impossible to capture any action shots or spontaneous moments, which we all know make the most precious of pictures. Since I am technologically challenged in this area, any suggestions on what to look for? Anyone have a favorite?

If you're looking for a point & shoot, I have a Canon Powershot S80. It has many of the features of my dSLR but is much smaller. I have not seen the Canon S3, but others seem to rate it highly. You can check them out at http://www.canonusa.com

Thanks for the link...what do I look for that will give me an idea of the speed? That's the only downfall to my current cam. Almost a full 2 seconds from the time you take the pic until it is recorded! Do you look at "shutter speed" or "shooting speed"? Sorry for all the questions, I am almost camera-illiterate
