Originally this past June we reserved our car rental with National based on the flight times we had scheduled. Of course Midway bowed out and we made the switch to USAir. Our flight times have again changed - from a late afternoon arrival to a mid morning one in Orlando. In checking the National website- a new ressie would mean an increase of about $146. - any suggestions on how to handle the new arrival time and ressie? Should we call National and hope for the same rate or play the wait and see game- flight times could change again before Feb. Thanks for any suggestions.

My suggestion: Leave the ressie alone and just show up at the counter earlier. Chances are they will have a car waiting at the original rate.

Alghough I have not used National, other rental companies have given me a car three to five hours early.

We're going to end up arriving 4-5 hours late, but I'm still going to keep our original reservation, unless the price comes WAY down between now and April. If you have a good rate, I probably wouldn't bother changing it since the rental agencies run on 24 hr clocks. If your reservation was for, say, 4 days. It will still probably be a 4 DAY reservation depending on whether or not return time has changed. This is just us though, we would show up and say HI, were here, may we have our car?:)

Last week I changed my National reservation to add a whole day at the end of the rental period and changed the pick up time to an earlier time. The rate did not change, even though the weekly rate and daily rate had increased via the internet site. Call the National #, tell them you do not want the reservation number to change, confirm that the rate will not change (before they make the change), update the reservation, and finally confirm that the changes took place by checking your reservation on their website ( at which point you can print the new reservation info) I always keep the employee #, date and time of call just in case there is a problem.

I had made a reservation for noon last February. I thought we would be taking our usual morning flight arriving around noon when I made the reservation the September before. The airfare was sky high and did appear to be going down, so we were able to get a good deal on air arriving late the night before. Since there was 3 of us, it was cheaper to split a cheap hotel room near the airport than the higher airfare in the morning. We used the free hotel shuttle back to the airport in the morning and arrived at National around 8:00am. We used Emerald Aisle and it was no problem being early, they didn't even mention it.

On the opposite side, I had made a reservation returning a car earlier this month around 5:00pm. We ended up getting an early afternoon flight, returning the car around 11:00am. They automatically adjusted my price for one less day (we picked up the car around 1:00pm, so by returning at 11:00am, it was one less rental day).
